It's the perfect city bike. I bought my first one nearly 25 years ago as part of my commute into London when the only people riding them were a bit nerdy (and there weren't that many around). I had seen them around and they looked nerdy, but also cool from an engineering point of view. They have really taken off in recent years to the point that I now feel like a pioneer. I managed to, recently, find a really early Brompton from 1990 and plan to restore it.

Those smaller 18-inch wheels look a bit sketchy. How do they hold up on REAL NYC Potholes and the mix of Industrial roads, cobblestone, and construction gravel patches out there? I got a Giant folding bike with BMX 20-inch tires, and I know that's perfect b/c I rode many years on my BMX, bike-packing from Bronx to Staten-Island back in the day. Also, can that frame handle the occasional bunny-hop onto a curb & over the rough stuff, or is that wishful thinking? Brompton's sure look tempting!
So far so good! I’ve gone up/down a few curbs and it was fine and the ride is smooth and comfortable. I can’t speak for longevity because I got it in April but I love it and ride it everywhere without a problem.
You will soon be tired of the small easy wheels, which are useless for anything but a totally flat surface! I have just ordered som 10 cm for mine, and a new titanium seat post, 535 mm, for my oversize (600 mm) originally delivered Lightweight.
The small east wheels are the first think I’ll be changing, they really don’t roll much.

It's a great city to ride around so, I'm glad you got the experience. Even if it was on a Boris Bike! I'm afraid we were in a similar position when we rode in NY for the first time, rented bikes. Brompton all the way next time though.
