  • The word “iconic” is over used. Not on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Powerful, elegant and luxurious, rolling up in the S is shorthand for success. Tom Voelk looks at the S 560 4MATIC model that will whisk the wealthy from boardroom to weekend home in style and comfort, whether they drive or are driven.

    Mercedes Benz not only invented the first modern automobile and motorcycle in 1886 as well as continue to produce engines for ships, airplanes, semi trucks Etc Mercedes has over a 100,000+ patents to the automobile, that everyone eventually copies to this day! From disc brakes, fuel injection, led headlights, traction control, abs, esp, auto braking, pre active air suspension that scans the road, stone massage seats, first production car with 100% LED Bulbs, push button start, keyless entry, TONS of safety innovations, to name just a few the list goes on & on & on...
    The Mercedes S-Class is the most Innovative and it is the number one selling large luxury sedan in the world for over 25+ years straight! Literally 90% of anything you find in a car today Mercedes most likely innovated it first decades ago. Knowledge is POWER! God Bless!! 😎✊👍

    I purchased a new 2018 S560 4matic early last summer. I custom ordered it with the features I wanted, and colors/materials and finishes. It is soooo comfortable, and like Mercedes have always been, classic lines, with no garish exterior. The features impress my tech friends, and the lux interior impresses the rest. I didn’t buy it to impress, but complements are a constant, even just parking in a grocery store. I’ve seen others in this comment section remark on bland looks, but for an understated exterior it seems to command fairly high praise from strangers and random individuals. As far as it’s quality, build, and hidden tech, it’s been a supreme car for daily driving, as well as road trips. Being in my 30’s I ordered it not for chauffeuring or anything like that, but to pick up my friends for dinners and going out and making sure everyone would be comfortable. There are cheaper options, but I got what I paid for and wanted. Speaking of this car and my age/friends…this is the car to drive your friends out on the town for cocktails. I paid the extra for the 20 something Burmester speakers to pump up the tunes, and turn on those interior ambient lights to red, purple, or deep blue, even the hot pink I have to admit, and it’s like a night club on wheels on the way to a nightclub! 🎉👍🏻. Plus, the valets always park it right up front for quick return of the car after leaving a club or restaurant. I guess the valets even have a respect for the car considering they always want it up front to be seen next to the other nicer rides. Blackout the rear windows and rear windshield with the shades at night and A LOT of fun can go on. I should mention I also have a 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera for a fun zippy ride, but I find myself using that just for dates now. If you have the means, and a group of fun friends that like to hit up the clubs and go on mini road trips, this is by far the most confident, comfy, yet fun way to get around. Splurge for the wheels and the AMG styling package to keep it fresh. I ordered the designo white, and went with a custom tent job for the windows, and it certainly gives it a edge in the looks department. It’s sheer mass adds an intimidation factor which is fun at our age. The next step up in size is an SUV…and I’m no where near a “babies on board” or soccer dad look yet. The “Big Benz” is a crowd pleaser for my crew…another friend was impressed enough to buy one for himself around the holidays. You will have a hard time finding an S class owner finding flaws that aren’t fickle or monetary. If money is a problem for you then just step down to a lower grade car. It has been the leader in its segment for a reason. It’s always setting benchmarks, and that keeps the others on their toes, meaning everyone benefits from S class in some way or another. it’s not as if the other cars created ASB or airbags, or crumple zones. I mean it’s iconic for a myriad of reasons. Btw…random, but I have a friend that bought a Tesla towards the end of last year, warning, nobody will want to ride in that backseat for long! Yikes! They might have the new tech down, but a long way from a lux interior…can’t even adjust the headrests. Maybe I’m just not feeling green…but I don’t have any children, so I figure I’m not adding anymore carbon prints to the planet. Plus that Tesla has a low ceiling as well; a few of us are over 6’ tall and you have to kind of “hunker down”! Not a chill ride out with friends, unless it’s a short ride. So the only downside to owning the new S560 is that you will end up being asked to drive your friends to the restaurants and movies and clubs! 😂 A burden I can handle. If I don’t feel like driving I can just say I’m drinking, and call the tried and true Uber driver! ✌🏻

      Congrats!!! I love it too though I don't have it yet at 53. In my place( Msia). It's 900K ! Insane price. But now I am in Singapore, hopefully to have it ! The next model is a disaster!!! Equivalent to the 1998 model, a disaster too!! 2021 model , the front light are slimmer against the wide body of the S Class!it's awfully ugly!!! Most likely by the time I could afford It it's gonna be a used car! Still its better than the 2021 craps design!

    Another great video Tom! There is a lot of cool technology in the S class now. I miss the styling of the early 2000’s Benzes. I think for most of the “upwardly mobile” the S class has everything and more of the things a luxury class buyer would want.

    I have a 2016 S550 with 33K miles ... bought it for 63K a year ago with 29 K miles ... it is the BEST riding, quietest, smoothest car I have ever owned ... and it's quicker than my 2005 Maserati Quatroporte which preceded it. Fast, comfortable and built solid. 26+ mpg on the interstate at 75+ mph. It the auto equivalent of flying first class ... only better.

    The S-class is actually pretty affordable - on the used market. Those $100k+ German cars depreciate like nobody's business!

    • @turnne
      @turnne Před 5 lety

      @E Brown
      Not sure what you consider affordable...but a 2015 ( with decent mileage) is still bringing over 50K...and that is one with little or no warranty left on it

    • @brynleytalbot778
      @brynleytalbot778 Před 5 lety +1

      And on the new market. In the U.K. the discounts are unbelievable. Factor in 0% credit and you can come close to beating a new and definitely a used E Class on Mercedes Finance when you option up to the S Class specification. Actually 1 to 2 year old S Class examples make little buying sense. Perhaps an indication of just how difficult the new car market really is. Given masses of cars come back after 3 to 4 years on crazy bubbles to lure "buyers" into a new car it's just a matter of time before car credit selling hits the buffers. I keep passing an '08 S Class on a used car pitch at £6495. Crazy money, true, but bear in mind the repair bills relate to its original showroom sticker. That's the catch. Ruinous to maintain. And that applies to all premium brands. Cheap, eventually, but always costly to repair. There's no genuine free lunch!

    • @turnne
      @turnne Před 5 lety

      @@brynleytalbot778
      In the United States...you cant option up an E class to S class specification. There are several options that are exclusive to the S class. Then there is the fact that the S class is a lot larger car if you need/want the extra room. In the United States they sell/lease at least 1000 S classes a month which is phenomenal for a car in its price range. It outsells cars like the Lexus LS ( which is far cheaper) handily
      You are right...in the example of the 11 year old model that you used. It is very expensive to maintain because you are fixing a 100K car not one that is $6495

    Tom, I am so old I remember when discerning, relatively wealthy yet value-conscious people invested in a rock solid Mercedes and kept it 20 years. The accountants at Daimler must have nightmares about the old days when they were not catering to badge-addled poseurs across the planet with a derivative Mercedes for every 'taste' and budget.

    Mercedes has history, pedigree, perfume spray, premium buying experience- all matter nothing to most people. Sure , some people want prestige that it brings , otherwise it does not get sold as it does, especially for that price. But the most important thing for any car buyer is - reliability, no one wants a car that gets broken down very often once it is 4 years old. After having paid a premium price most would like some peace of mind , like Lexus brings. Benz and Beamer are obviously more famous German brands but among auto buffs - they are notorious for lack of reliability. Audi is more reliable of the 3 biggies , Lexus IS the most reliable of them all, Genesis is an affordable alternative to Lexus with equal reliability and unmatched warranty

      @@DrivenCarReviews Sad you did that, basically makes your video a throwaway video after all that work because most people won't watch again, just leave it with the mistakes in and just correct it with a pinned comment below. I'll watch it again though so you get the credit for it, hope everyone else does too.

    Beautiful inside and understated out. I like the subtlety but dare I say it needs a facelift. Looks a little dated now.

    Diamond stitching on the dash, and in brown! At least no-one claimed the Germans have any sense of style.

    Great car Tom. New CT6 will turn more heads at 50k cheaper. The new V series of the CT6 will smoke this Benz

      CT6 is dead at half the price, S-Class lives on, the public disagrees. Also I'm annoyed they are getting rid of the CT6, I think it's a pretty awesome car.

      CT6 is an okay build quality by GM, nothing more, nothing less. Definitely NOT same league of the S560. Btw, this S560 is not for speed, they have S63 AMG to do that and of course, CT6 can only dream to be in the same room with the S63. and most people (usually chicks) won't even notice Cadillac these day not even talking about CT6. The Mercedes badge is way more pronouns in term of brand recognition and luxury and Cadillac.

    Quality product. Pity it also has the typical Mercedes banana like styling. As do the GLE Coupe and the CLA Shooting Brake....perhaps a banana is the designers' favourite food?
