  • One of the coolest drives to see Capitol Reef away from the crowds and blacktop roads is a drive down Hartnet Road that fords a river and takes you through changing topography all the way back to the primitive camping sites, then connects to Cathedral Road that brings you back around to Temple of the Moon and Sun and more adventures. We camped off the park grounds on BLM off Cathedral Road. The 66 mile loop starts and returns to Hwy 24 east of Torrey, UT. High clearance recommended and the soft sand on Cathedral might require 4x4. We did it with rear diff locks and good tires. Road conditions could change dramatic with weather. Explore NOW!

It was one of our favorite drives. We started from the Hartnet Road side and decided we would find a campsite in the BLM land along the return side on Cathedral Road. You should have no problem unless the river is up from flooding. The soft sand on Cathedral is touch if you go too slow. I could see a problem if you had to slow down for someone coming the other direction. Glad you watched! We are headed to South Dakota next!

Glad you liked it, that was a fun loop and I would do it again if we were in the area. I believe the last song was called "Moments by Moments" by Lifehouse.
