Sigma just launched an ALL NEW 10X zoom lens for sports & wildlife mirrorless photographers! It fits both Sony E-mount and L-mount (Panasonic and Leica) mirrorless cameras: The 60-600! Tony & Chelsea Northrup test it for sharpness, autofocus performance, frames per second with the Sony a1, handling, balance, design, minimum focusing distance, focus breathing/focal shrinking, and MORE!

With all these great Sigma and Tamron lenses coming out, as a Canon RF user, my soul hurts more and more with each release.
Canon made a dick move when they blocked any third party lens to use their RF mount. RIP Canon users.. you're attached to give money directly to canon.
@@edvelfilms Also, whichever brand you use, you're giving your money to someone. One way or another, you have less money and more gear. What matters is what you make with it.
Exactly why I bought both
agreed i wouldnt be able to live without my 35-150 f2-2.8 tamron 🥺🥺
The fact that Leica allows 3rd party lenses is an even bigger slap in the face.
+1 for showing how it balances on the tripod and for showing stabilization results.
You guys are great. I watch you because of the combination of technical information and practical advice, plus the banter between you two keeps it interesting. Sorry you felt you had to work with colds. I hope you recover soon. All the best.
Send all the birds to me!!! Lol great comparison.
MARK SEND MY OSPREY BACK!!! I'm so bored lol.
@@TonyAndChelsea lol! In due time.
I had a Sigma 50-500 for over a decade and it was a staple on my 'car/travel' camera. I could take a photo of an elephant or the bird on it's back. Super convenient! Good to see this new 'update' option.
You guys along with chris frost and matt granger do the best lens reviews. Thanks for the work you put in for these reviews.
Dustin Abbott my friend. Dustin Abbott.
They are Sony biased. Can't trust them fully. You need to find more trustworthy people ;)
@@dicekolev5360 Would you say that Christopher Frost would purposefully make a non Sony lens look worse than it is?
@@Al.j.Vasquez Frost has Sony camera, Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Panasonic even if I'm not mistaken and he reviews them all + 3rd party lenses no matter the mount. I can't even put him in a same sentence with the Northrups 🤷♂️
Thank you!
Thanks Tony and Chelsea for keep posting all the wonderful educational videos even when you guys are sick! I noticed this from the beginning when Chelsea started talking. Please take good care of yourself!
Thanks for pushing through! Hope you’re both feeling better!
Great vid guys! Loads of useful info presented in an even-handed style. I'll be packing my extension tubes from now on after that scene on focus breathing. Keep it up!🤩
😂Wonderful Chelsea’s face at 2:22 after saying “mine doesn’t suck”. Love you
I thought she was going to burst out laughing.
This was an excellent comparison video, thank you very much for doing it.
Hope you guys feel better. Thanks for the commitment to your craft and profession.
Mine does not suck…lol. Major point as I recently sent my Sony 100-400mm GM in to be cleaned, which I also had to do with my Canons in the past. 99% of the time I personally use my 200-600mm at 400mm+ and love its balance. THANKS Sony for sharing your mount and giving us third party options like this.
You both look tired on this video, but still manage to give so much insight. Never shot wildlife, yet this informations were really good. Bravo
Great review, thank you. I do not see bird photographers rushing out to sell their 200-600 however. The Sigma is heavier, much more expensive (here in the UK anyway), unbalanced on tripods, horrible extension to lens body when zooming, and a so-so build quality - all compared to the 200-600. The 200-600 is so well built, lighter, sharp, quick & silent auto-focus and at a a great price. I've never really used anything less than 200mm as a commercial bird photographer (wild birds) in 25 years. The 200-600mm is also very nearly comparable to my Sony 600mm f4 at f6.3 in terms of sharpness and autofocus speed.
Sigma 150-600 is more comparable to the 200-600, this Sigma is just so different
What is a “commercial Bird photographer” please enlighten me! 👍😀
@@antonoatI think what he's trying to say is that he's 40+ and occasionally posts bird images to Shutterstock.

As always entertaining and informative for us hobby photographers considering lenses and cameras. Thanks!
Thanks for the helpful review. Hope you’re feeling better soon!
Thank you for your very informative and helpful review on both lenses.
Great comparison! Thanks! Literally just got the Sony 200-600 and was worried when I heard about the Sigma but, after watching this, the Sony is a keeper (for my needs)! You guys rock and keep up the great work!
Most of the other reviews are saying this lens is less sharp then the 150-600 and the 150-600 is definitely less sharp than the 200-600, I've personal experience of that. Not seen any lens to beat the 200-600 on sharpness except big primes.
I got the tamron 150-500 a while ago and it’s very sharp.. the Sony was sold out. Sony is internal zoom though which is great
Yeah for the same price, it's not an argument. Sony all the way. The extendable lenses are wack. However, a 150-600 sigma C For less than half the price, then it may be worth it on a budget.
@@sonofnothing not necessarily, like they said at times animals come really close to you and 60mm is way better than 200mm. Changing lenses repeatedly is a PITA, 2 cameras with 2 lenses is expensive so 60-600 is way more versatile than 200-600. I really want the Sony but the dilemma is the Sigma is way more versatile.
For me, the promary reason to have a zoom with 500 or 600mm focal length is to get the long end of the range. Getting the shorter end comes in handy, but I buy it for the reach and that's where I want the best performance.
I just want to say you guys are great. Informative and have great attitudes.
Really loved the section starting at 9:00. I tasted a bit of the fun you get while doing bird/wildlife photography!
Sounds like you're both recovering from colds...you look energetic and happy so glad to see! Nice review video as well. Happy New Year!
Thank you and happy new year to you! We actually still feel like garbage!
Nice work on the video.
I’m new to your channel, I appreciate the way you both present yourselves and the gear. Thanks
Man I never thought of external zoom as sucking air in! That’s kind of scary lmao
Amazing review, and I have the 200-600mm and think it's the better one mainly for weather sealing. But might as well buy the Sigma if I get another Sony body or if I can only carry one lens as 60mm on a full frame is wide enough in most cases and the insane close focusing distance.
You both rock! Love you both and your so knowledgeable. Thank you for sharing 😀😀💕💕
The most significant take away from this video was that Sony limits the fps for 3rd party lenses. Thank you for this info! Also, I was about to buy a Canon camera this week but cancelled the order because of your video telling me about no 3rd party lenses for Canon RF. I appreciate your help!
Rumor has it that Sigma will announce an agreement with Canon to produce RF lenses possibly as early as February.
The results are interesting, I haven't ventured too far into that area of photography, but the few pictures I've taken were just with my smartphone and a teleconverter (which is almost like a 1500mm I think) and I'll definitely consider the Sigma presented when I get to is possible
I really appreciate the detailed description and context you give your reviews! Also the humor is much appreciated. Damn seagulls.
Found the focus magnification range option on sig 150 600 brilliant for suddenly to close doesn't completely solve the to close factor but does good job of it .60 to 600 great idea range need less weight and non telescoping not to expensive .Jumping for that lens with decent imaging focus.
Super interesting comments on the use of tube extensions with big zooms. Have you done a comparison between extension tubes and teleconverters? When would the teleconverter have the advantage to justify the extra expense?
Thanks for the review !
Was wondering what are your recommended settings / methods to optimally track birds with the A1 ( tracking sensitivity , focus area , etc. ) ?
Hi, I watch you guys all the time and appreciate your reviews. I'm going out this Monday to take photos of Eagles for the first time and I am considering purchasing the Sigma 60-600 F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM. Question, will it work on the Nikon Z7 and the FTZ adaptor? Is it an FX lens? I am looking at it because of the price. Is there a better lens option of me as a first time wildlife shooter?
Thanks!
Clayton Fox
Hey guys, great video! I am a hybrid shooter and was wondering if you did any tests with this on the video side of things as well? Would be very interested to see which is better for videos as well. Keep up the great work!
Great comparison video thanks! I see you have the same cover on your Sony as I do - what a bugger that cover on the lens hood was to get on! But happy with the RolanPro cover over all.
i wonder how does it compare to the tamron 50 - 400 overall. tamron seems to be pretty sharp and quick, and im wondering if the extra weight and price is worth the +200 milimeters. but that stabe seems to be very nice, i would like to see how it performs for video, because the tamron is so so in that regard.
Great! Thanks! For APS-C shooters (since many wildlife shooters use APS-C specifically), the Sigma's ability to go down to 60mm is an extreme advantage. Glad to hear you're recovering. Have some chicken soup!
many thanks for sharing great information...stay blessed
Back in the day, shooting my daughter's softball games, the Sigma 50-500 was a game changer. I could cover all the bases and the out field standing at the same spot. Did not need to change positions. Loved the extra zoom range.
Yeah I'm shooting baseball on 150-500mm Tamron. Wish I had money for the sigma. Can't cover the nearest base at 150mm.
60-600 is a great range for shooting baseball! I sometimes can't use my 200-600G because I can't shoot the nearest base or the batters. But what I really want is a 150-400/4 w/o image stabilization (for lighter weight). That way I can use the lens under the lights also.
For sure. My sigma 100-400 was pretty useful but realized how much the AF was lacking once I got my 200-600. Sounds like this 60-600 would fix the focus. 200mm is definitely too tight within half a base line, but I would miss the small zoom throw of the 200-600. Compromise either way but the 60-600 would be a compelling all around lens.
@@greggeis918 sigma af < tamron
Can you test the stabilization effectiveness of the 200-600 on the A7RV (which have sync IBIS for Sony lenses) vs Sigma vs Sony without sync IBIS? :)
I love that you are comparing the Sigma lens against Sony lens. Great job as you made me think outside of my, "Personal Box".
I have the 200-600 and when I want something more compact I use the 100-400 Sony or the 150-500 tamron. This new sigma looks good for people who only want one lens from short to long but the weight is off putting. It’s a do all the things slightly less well sort of lens but it looks sharp and well made. Such a positive to have so many good lenses from Sony and third parties. It’s good to see an improvement over the previous sigma 150-600 for Sony e as that was very disappointing AF wise. At the same price as this new sigma for wildlife the sony 200-600 still represents great value.
Superb review..waiting for time to compare these two lens ...Love from India..
Nice comparison, loved the Mark Smith mention :D
That is a great review as always. I wish I had a camera that could use the new Sigma. All I have right now is a Canon 7D and a 7D MKII
love your reviews!
Loved the call out to Mark Smith lol! Great video.
I love the 200-600 because the focus is fully internally. The 60-600 external zoom is one thing, the weight another different things.
My Sony 200-600 is sharp until 550-570 mm after which it becomes less sharpened
Does anyone know if this lens limits the frame rate on the Sony A7R family of cameras?
I notice the Sony is bigger diameter.Does that affect the difference in light that gets into the camera?
Ironically, I tested their Canon EF version of that lens (on my R6) just two days before they announced the Sigma version. Honestly, even the DSLR version ain't bad at all
While the Sigma is great for wildlife, you missed the opportunity to discuss what to my mind is one of the biggest advantages of the extra range on the short side. If you are photographing sports (football, lacrosse, field hockey) the action frequently moves quickly from close to the sideline you are standing by to the far end zone, or vice versa. With this lens you can get close ups of both the quarterback throwing the pass 15 yard from where you are standing, and then the reception 60 yards away.
more people shoot wildlife
@@edrader probably true, but there are plenty of dads on the sideline shooting their kids games as well. I didn't say to ignore the wildlife shooting advantages, just to add a note for the athletics shooters as well. I shoot both.
Excellent point about "Focal Shrinking" starting at 6:20 but I did not quite understand how and why that happens and why extension tubes are able to overcome it. Could you explain it in more detail or provide a link to any existing video.
If the barrel is fully extended out in case of Sigma, how does a fully extended barrel become 300mm if the barrel does not retract back in?
I REALLY love my Sigma 60-600 F mount lens. Now that I have switched to the Z9 I am curious as to whether this E mount one that you reviewed fits the Nikon Z9?
Very useful thanks
Very helpful comparisons for what is a quite difficult choice. What I am interested to know is if the Sigma lens will work with the likes of the Sony FX6/FX9 video cameras? I currently use the Sony 100-400 G Master with both and it works superbly as a video camera zoom lens using a zoom demand motor.
A great video lots of info
wow, never knew how much focus breathing could affect those super telephotos, that's nuts.
You could mitigate the gimbal balance issue a bit with a longer Arca Swiss plate which would allow you to rebalance slightly faster by loosening the plate and moving the camera.
2:18 This entire video, beautifully summarized by Chelsea in three words.
Hi Tony, which extension tubes work the best with Sony 200-600 lens and A1 combo based on your experience??
Any link in the description would be helpful 🙏🏻
One more thing, if you can also do a Z9 with megadap ETZ adaptor with Sony 200-600 or 100-400 review that would be awesome .. Thank you 😊
That was a calm review
Chelsea trying to hold in her laugh after 2:18 lol
Thanks! Get better soon! What is the frame rate with the 7RV?
Great review. Chelsea, she's so funny.
Thank you, guys .
Good health to you! Thanks for the review. I wish Sigma would make a camera as nice as the A1. That would solve the 15fps issue. But I am glad Sony at least gives us a choice and for Sony A7R V or IV shooters 15fps is fine.
Panasonic S5II
I've used the Sigma 50-500 and Tony is correct...when used in the field over long periods of time dust does get in internally. I've used this lens all around the world filming wildlife professionally and saw this first hand. I tried to send it in for cleaning and was told that the internal workings had a sticky coating and therefore they are unable to clean the lens. Having dust spots grow as you zoom in created longer editing time! I'm looking forward to trying the 60-600
The Bigma 50-500 was a staple for many of us for years. Now we have "son of Bigma."
I am getting ready to go on safari (and do high school wrestling photos). If you could only choose 1 lens---which would you go with?
Great review , Thanks. Is the Sigma 60-600 sharper Than the Sigma 150-600mm ?
Good and useful feedback! Thanks
What camera backpack can you recommend for a larger setup like S5 II or EOS R6 with 60-600mm + second body + 24-70mm and maybe 50mm lenses?
On top batteries, filters and a dji mini 3 drone would be awesome.
2 seconds in and I'm predicting the sealed 200-600 comes out the better overall. Will edit if I'm wrong.
Interesting review, thanks, but I am definitely sticking with my Sony 200-600.
AWESOME video and so very informative! what was refreshing was no adverts!! I GET IT and i understand but sometimes 3 times in a vid is tiring LOL but I think i know what i will buy. so, do i stay Canon (reluctance) or go Sony A7R IV... not happy with Canon's stance on 3rd party lenses
One thing you missed. The A7R5 is the ONE body in the lineup that provides Sync Steadyshot which will easily equal the amazing stabilization of the Sigma. Too bad you didn't get the opportunity to see the A7R5 with the 200-600 in action. it's amazing now as well. Make sure you update the firmware on the lens for sure for those who have a A7R5.
I don’t see “sync steadyshot” in any sony literature. What exactly are you referring to?
@@commane21 I think Lee means the Active Steadyshot
I am currently looking at this camera.... I am getting ready to go on safari and can only take 1 lens... torn between 50-400 and 60-600! or even the 5-500 :). do you love the A7R5? I'm torn between the Sony and the Nikon Z8
Hello Chelsea & Tony! As always you are as quick as possible to present us the new products. One thing you didn't mentioned and that was one of the reasons why I didn't go for the old 150-600 Sigma e-mount, is the fact that you can't use an extender like the 1.4x or 2.0x from Sony. I assume that is still not supported with the new 60-600 Sigma, right? Best regards Paul
I'll test this and make a follow-up short.
That was my same question, Tony and Chelsea. I just returned from a Safari in Kenya and really enjoyed shooting on the Tamron 150-500 but I wonder if I would have been better served by a lens with teleconverter support. There is no official teleconverter support for a third-party, super telephoto, or e-mount lense; as far as I know. However, I'm curious if any of the lenses will simply work with a sony or third-party teleconverter.
@@TonyAndChelsea I’m not impressed with the 1.4 tc performance on the Sony 200-600 either.
What's your opinion on pairing this lens with Sony 6400 camera? picture quality? Is it worth it or is this lens ideal for a full sensor camera.
Thank you
I have a 60-600+mc11 but the auto focus is noisy/slow and the 200-600 is much quieter, and i like the internal zoom so much...is the e mount 60-600mm quieter and faster? thanks...greets from the Netherlands
Are these 2 the best lenses with those focal lengths one the market?
The Mark Smith parody was gold.
Ooh, sounds amazing 👏🏻
Do other Sony bodys limit third party lenses or is it just A1
Is tamron 150-500 also have this issue with focus breathing and close focus changing focal?
No mention that you can't use a TC on Sony with the Sigma?
Great video. I want one of those. Oh, and what does "Fixed Zoom" mean in the the lens name: *Sigma 60-600mm f/22-32 Fixed Zoom*
9:00 I don't blame the birds. Mark Smith is aweseome.
I prefer clearly the Sony 200-600mm. I did not purchase a Sony A1 to mess around with 15fps only with a Tamron or Sigma lens.
Good review from a Wildlife photgrapher points of view. Many times reviewers only do lab tests and not usablity. Beware of the fanboys that will say Tony and Chelsea are paid by Sony.
Guys, thanks for the video. I’m thinking about putting one of these lens on my Sony a 6700 for wildlife photography planning on doing a Safari in a year or two but that’s just one trip. which one would you recommend forthat camera? Thanks
Would you be kind enough to compare new fuji 150-600 along with sigma and Sony zoom lenses of the same range. Thank you
So...the Sigma is for mirrorless cameras? I missed that DC DN discussion at the start.
The Sony limit of 15fps on 3rd party lenses is a HUGE gotcha. I had never heard that before. I wonder if the same limit applies to video with my FX-30.
On my 55" 4k monitor and full screen, the Sigma seems like the colors are a bit more vibrant and lean less into the blues.
It shouldn't apply to video though?
It doesn't. The limit applies "only" to stills photography with AF enabled.
I assume not available as an EF mount... sad day! Would love this for my 90D. I'm trying to decide which zoom to buy for it.
There is a sigma foot that comes with the DSLR EF version that you can buy seperate that is a long arca Swiss lens foot so balancing on a gmibal is easier even at 600mm.
Okay Tony I'd like the review that you and Chelsea did it was good , so with the Canon mount model will that Sigma 60-600 on the Canon mount model will it work as good as the Sony one that you tested their .
I’m going to go with the Sony lens just because of when you zoom out its all internal and already have the 70-200mm 2.8ii and love that lens
I have a Tamron 150-500mm, should I return it and get the Sony 200-600mm? I ask because I have a Tamron 28-200mm and because of the zoom extension I have dust in the inside of the lens which bothers me. The Sony is internal zoom so no dust inside the lens. I'm an amateur that wants a 2 or 3 lenses to cover from 24mm or so to as much as I can get with in financial reason.
Sigma is rumored to announce lenses for the Nikon Z Mount I wonder if that's one they would release. It would be interesting to see how it compares to the nikon 200-500.
That's interesting. The 200-500 is a serious bang for your buck lens 👍
Can the extension tubes that you mentioned increase my focal length on my 70-300 Sony lens?
Well done guys
