Longest Game Ever in World Chess Championship History | Carlsen vs Nepomniachtchi - Game 6

  • World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defends his title against challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia in Game 6 of the 2021 World Chess Championship match that is being held in Dubai. It's a best of 14 games where the first player to earn 7.5 points earns the lion's share (60%) of a $2.24 million prize pool, and the title of "World Chess Champion". What did this game not have! Carlsen played d4 and offered the gambit of a pawn early that Nepomniachtchi declined. Nepomniachtchi was ambitious by opting to damage his kingside structure in order to keep queens on. Carlsen’s queen shortly thereafter left the game in exchange for 2 rooks. Nepomniachtchi mounted serious pressure against Carlsen’s queenside pawns, and acquired a very dangerous passed a-pawn. Nepomniachtchi set many problems for Carlsen to solve and it nearly exhausted every last second of Carlsen’s clock just before making the first time control. Both players were in bullet mode to meet the 1st time control, and blitz mode to meet the 2nd time control. Additional imbalances surfaced, fortresses were possible as a bailout for Carlsen, the game lasted 7 hours and 45 minutes, and in the end Game 6 made history by becoming the longest game ever in World Chess Championship play by reaching move 136. The previous record was set in game 5 of the 1978 title match between Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi, which was a 124-move encounter ending in stalemate

    This game showed two things:
    1. Carlsen is definitely a endgame genius, playing such an unbalanced position with low time almost perfectly
    2. Does not matter what the computer says, in the end we are humans and what moves are on the board matters. That's why I dislike recent coverage of chess tournaments, just showing computer lines.

    • @star-iv
      @star-iv Před 2 lety +10

      I agree, it doesn't matter what the computer says: The game is being played between two humans. I did like the commentators using the computer to help with their analysis with the end game. Once they found out that the game could be drawn via the tablebase, they were looking for ways in how the game could be drawn. Caruana pointed out that there would likely be many possible moves that could still lead to a draw until a few only moves would have to be played in order to maintain the draw. Once the tablebase showed that there was no longer a forced draw, it was clear that Magnus had broken through. The computer showed where the error occured and the commentators did a great job explaining that the queen needs to leverage the open lines and not get boxed into a corner.

    • @gamemeister27
      @gamemeister27 Před rokem

      I like the aid of a computer when accompanied by someone who has the skill to call out when its move recommendations are unrealistic. Several times I've seen good commentators point out that a recommended move is purely an engine move, nothing that a human could reasonably be expected to calculate. One drawing line involved an insane king walk with many possible variations, but of course the engine knew that none of them resulted in a successful attack.

    Thank you Jerry, for all the long years you've been doing this.
    I just have to write here that your post game analysis is always, hands down, the best. Agadmator, whom I've never been able to digest even though he's my fellow countryman, basically reads out the moves with the most basic insights into the mind bending tactics. Levy Rozman is a somewhat new youtuber I'm not that well acquainted with, but from what I have seen, the majority of his analyses always deviate from a central, concentrated narrative and seem to be overly focused on the quasi showmanship aspect and his own ego. He is insightful though, but his entire persona appeals more to teenagers. I am only noting them in this comment because I've been following you for a decade, or more even, and these guys suddenly burst into the scene with millions of subs after some publicity given to the game of chess by a mediocre netflix series. You are the king of these videos. Thank you

      1. He didn't call anyone anything, he made a comparison.
      2. Even if you insist on calling ADHD a "mental handicap", it's a very mild condition that is often more of a character trait than a serious disability.
      3. There's no such thing as "insulting everyone". Would you say I'm "putting others down" if I say that humans are stupid? He pointed out things that he presumably encountered in the past and disliked, without calling names. Sure, he perhaps used a slightly insensitive exaggeration to do so - but I can't see how it's disrespectful if it doesn't point at anyone specific.
      I'm confused whether you agree with him (and have particular commentators in mind that fit his description) or you don't (in which case I can't see how you could treat it as an insult, as it doesn't refer to anyone).

    This was an epic game! i only saw the end when it got to a tablebase draw, but Magnus was pushing for the win relentlessly, finding all the best moves and slowly wearing out Nepo who was defending very well but eventually got tired and impatient and made some inaccuracies that allowed Magnus to clinch the advanage.
    I can't even fault Nepo here, because Magnus could and would prolong this game for a very long time even after 125 moves and Nepo had to be careful with every move, Nepo had to stay super focused the whole time and with every move that got harder and harder as he gets more tired and more annoyed that the game is still going, which is exactly what Magnus wanted.

    The time pressure was definitely there but after that exchange by Ian of 2 rooks for the queen, I was 100% convinced that Magnus was going to grind it out in much the way he did because of the weak pawns on Black's king side. You could see it coming a mile away.

    Such a wonderful game. Carlson is bafflingly good, and this analysis was so thorough for such a short video turn around.

  • @factandsuspicionpodcast2727

    I'm a Bama fan and I was more stressed watching this game than I was during the final regulation minutes of the Iron Bowl this year.
    When Magnus dropped from four minutes to 30 seconds only to play a move Simon Williams saw immediately, I nearly had a stroke.
    Nepo may lose, but he's already silenced the crowd that claimed he'd get blown off the board. He's been brilliant; Magnus is just Magnus.

    Always look forward to these. Would be nice to get some explainations of concepts liek table base and the time controls as they come into effect. Also when you go through "tale of the tape" I'd love if it if you went back and glimpsed those vital moments again.

    • @grantcivyt
      @grantcivyt Před 2 lety +1

      Good point. Jerry's analysis is pretty approachable for beginners but I think he assumes you've played a bit. Table base is just a list of "known" ending positions that have an established result with "perfect" play. Computer chess engines have table bases programmed in so they would play this kind of ending flawlessly.

    • @chillax9184
      @chillax9184 Před 2 lety

      Actually table base is hard to comprehend. Even SuperGM's who commentate the game didn't know why Qb1, Qc2 is the equalizing move and why does Qe6 is a mistake by Nepo. But it would be nice it Jerry can do it :))

  • @lysssky7056

    this was easily the sweatiest and most intense game of the championship. u can really feel the time pressure and level of precision they needed to play at to hold off until the end

    Hi Jerry, your video is awesome! Even an average chess player like me can understand your comments so you are really spot on !
    These are games for the real chess-lovers, but they may seem dull to occasional players or non-players, because they will neither
    grasp what is going on, nor feel the tension ! I think Nepo must be devastated after this loss and I hope he will somewhat bounce back,
    as it appears that steamroller Magnus is activated... By the way, I'm tuning in from France, but that doesn't matter because
    'gens una summus' !

    • @lukecash3500
      @lukecash3500 Před 2 lety

      It seems pretty rough because Magnus can play solid and drawish from here on. I'm curious if he'll even play D4 again or try to instigate much imbalance as white, then when Carlsen is black it feels as if Nepo can't even afford to think conservative any more.

    • @fransvoogt5145
      @fransvoogt5145 Před 2 lety

      Yes Luke, I think you are right, because Magnus is a super calculator and he knows how to secure things. He did that against Karjakin when drawing all the time, knowing he was a far better in rapid play. So yes, I agree with you !

  • @alexchristopher221
    @alexchristopher221 Před 2 lety +3

    Carlsen presented a great endgame lesson once he started his pawn advance in the final stage of this game. The game was his once he gave up a rook for the bishop.

    • @steinanderson9849
      @steinanderson9849 Před 2 lety +4

      it was win or draw for white. if Magnus was black and pulled a draw with Q vs R & N then he would be top - black had to find perfect square exclusively moves to draw.

    • @somewhere6
      @somewhere6 Před 2 lety +1

      There was some time pressure but that could be mitigated by some meaningless checks. Therefore, Magnus could play with great confidence. He was not going to lose and sooner or later Ian would make a mistake. Solid ending play but there have been MANY much greater endings.
