    A couple of reasonable additions to the "instantly make a flower blossom, a seed pod open, or a leaf bud bloom" line would be making fruit ripen (i.e. turning a green apple red, *not* growing an apple), a seed germinate (the seedling still isn't guaranteed to survive where you transplant it and growing it still takes time or a higher-level spell), making tangled undergrowth part, grasses and vines harmlessly sway and dance or flowers turn towards you like the sun (biologically controlled by the same mechanism as leaves unfurling), or even coaxing open the trap of a Giant Flytrap to let the grappled target escape (ditto), making a poisonous fungus release it's spores before the party gets near it (or just annoying an NPC with hayfever by releasing pollen), or, for coast druids, encouraging a live clam or oyster to open its shell (you could find pearls quicker this way but you'd still only have a 1/10000 chance each time so it's not going to break the economy). All of these add RP potential without being game-breaking or stepping on the toes of higher-level spells like Plant Growth. I also think being able to wilt plants or make leaves and petals drop would be a reasonable extension of the concept, especially for a Spore Druid, but I can see PCs abusing it (destroy all the NPC's crops so they're forced to buy Goodberries from you!) so I'm not sure if it's worth allowing.
    I've seen people complain druids being allowed to ripen fruit would change the in-game economy too much, but that's nonsense IMO. It's biologically super easy to do (controlled by way less different factors than flowering is), we do it in the real-world all the time (picking tomatoes or bananas green then ripening them with ethylene gas) and have been doing so for hundreds of years. It's still not instant food; banning it because it's not in the list of examples despite being in the spirit of the cantrip is harsh.

    While sleeping in our camp off the side of the road a group of two ogres and an orc accidentally made up camp a couple hundred feet away from us without noticing us, as they discussed their plans to ambush and kill the next travelers they met on the road the orc attempted to start a fire with some flint. While he did so my Druid snuck up close enough to be in range and continually extinguished his flame every time he got it started. This caused his ogre companions to get upset at his failures and allowed my party the time to surround and surprise the enemies! It was great!

    Druid sailor with druidcraft on a wooden ship would be very helpful. Being able to extinguish small flames and not have to use sea water, portable water, Drinking water would be a desirable skill. Begin shipboard damage control and repair with "plant growth" would be a desirable skill. Weather forecast for upcoming 24 hours would be a desirable skill to avoid storms. The ability to cast a "harmless sensory effect" would bring comfort on long voyages.

    Recently in a campaign, our party needed the tears of a new bride (for reasons, as you do). Happening upon a group of vampires performing a ritual/wedding, we had the bride surrounded and pinned, whereupon our Druid who is an...interesting player...said "OKAY, so...I wanna use Druidcraft to grow an onion in my hand, and shove it in her face to make her cry!"
    Did she currently have a seed to grow into an onion? Well, no. But was it an awesome idea, and therefore subject to the Rule Of Cool? Ohh good dear lord, yes, and thus was approved by the DM. Highly case sensitive use of the spell, and needing to be cleared by the DM, but some solid outside-of-the-box thinking for a cantrip that's heavily based on "What can you imagine doing with this?"

    Played a game recently where nobody (including me, a first-time player) had a good grasp on how some mechanics are supposed to work, and so we thought that "the effect can manifest as a golden orb for clear skies" meant I can literally summon (fake?) Sun in the middle of the night that lasted for the entire battle and shined in a 45x45 feet cube. Considering we were 3 lvl 2's and me, a lvl 1 druid, and DM made us fight a regenerating (unless in sunlight) vampire spawn, this, admittedly huge, rule-bending saved the party. Considering how differently the spell should actually work, I think it would be better to retcon it as a momentary blessing from the Sun that I can't access again.

    My party and I were going through an eldritch Illusion dungeon and we've been wandering for days and loosing our minds via memories, enemies that weren't really there and so on, And at one point, we though we had found the exit and made our way outside to the familiar lush jungle the dungeon was located at, However, I wanted to be sure, so I used druidcraft to double check if the weather itself even matched up with what we were seeing. So while we were experiencing a beautiful if not hot and humid weather, the druidcraft determined, it was suppose to be an absolute torrential downpour. which while dashed our hope that we were finally out of that hell, we at least were able to press on with more caution through the fake jungle. My entire party was completely caught off guard that such a niche cantrip was a linchpin in decerning what environment was real or not. Gonna be digging deeper into outlandish ideas that may come up now.

    Currently playing a druid in a campaign that has a lot of sea travel. Predicting the weather can be a relatively big deal if your DM cares about that (which they should since weather can be one of the most common dangers at sea). It also can give you a clue for free to better know what spells you might want to prepare the next morning, for example, call lightning is a good option if you know it's going to be stormy, or control winds or water if the weather is not going to work in your favor and you're in a hurry. Not the best spell in the world but it's not like the other utility druid cantrips are game changing either. For non naval campaigns imagine being trapped in a blizzard, sandstorm etc and being able to better decide whether it's best to rest and wait it out or push through it.

      As a Druid druidcraft, guidance, mending, and poison spray are my go to and will choose between them based on the setting of the campaign. Though create fire can be more ideal if you want light or damge cantrip.
      Knowing weather is good for sea/air stories, the growth is good for even lengthening a vine or herb grow if you need materials guess think of it as a minor plant growth spell, or a minor illusion like effect for distractions or bard assistance for advantages. If your dm is nice could work out a way for you to get plant based materials using the 3rd effect for other spells material requirements essentially causing you to use 2 actions to get what you need for the second.

    Could you use it to make a sappling from say an acorn and how big could it be?
    I was thinking about making a druid with a sling or sling shot and would fling acorns and cast druid craft on it to make it a sappling. If it was a sizable sappling that would make something turn into a heavy item being chucked.
    Another idea would be to instantly catch a nut in fire like a walnut. Walnuts have been know to explode when set on fire. So if you had a bag of nuts you can have a fun light bomb party.
    Does anyone know if these idea could work? I want to make a druid that is either battle oriented or crafty. Either build requires an easy way to defend one's self.

You could use it to create a horrible smell around someone, as long as you're within 30 feet, making it harder for them to make persuasion checks. You could also use the weather prediction to make some money by selling your forcast to, say, sailers or farmers

    Druidcraft is amazing, my Druid used it to make his cloak (grew out vines and tied them together made them sprout leaves and even used a few twigs and animal furs to make it warm and connectable to my armor.
    The second way I used it is as more of a joke than anything, my character used many bits of plants and grass for the cloak, and he always has a few flower buds up his sleeve, as a party trick.

    I see this being useful in conjunction with a rogue, and setting up ambushes.
    For example, setting up minor illusion, a campfife and then remove the campfire.
    This spell might also be good for keeping away animals like hunting dogs and predators. Luring away soldiers or owlbears into enemy camps.
    This spell might be good in campaigns involving harsh weather conditions such as blizzards and sand storms. Or in the abyss for acid rain.

  • @SodaPopBarbecue
    @SodaPopBarbecue Před 4 lety +6

    Druidcraft is amazing for testing and training a DM...because now weather has to be charted and accounted for EVERY TIME AND PLACE. In addition, the minor plant control is useful for Druid/Selsneya Conclave-specific RP(such as proving you're a friend of nature or a member of said guild)(And filling an enemy's room full of addictive enchanted edible hallucinogenic plant parts that you carry in your bag of holding ain't half bad, either), and the sensory effect of skunk spray is useful for hiding your scent from smell-based trackers. The puff of wind thing and papers...that teeters on the edge of not being harmless, but I might rule that as OK(Disrupting a corrupt, blindly loyal or misguided official's execution papers meant for your framed party member is a yes, but not an arrest warrant your paladin is filing against an NPC/bad guy).

    This spell is puzzling. The fire and the sensory effect are useful. The other two puzzle me.
    Predicting weather? I almost never see weather come up in D&D games and when it does it is to create environmental hazards and debuffs. Though the spells flavor and RP value is great using it is asking for a debuff.
    Opening a flower blossom, leaf bud, or seed pod? You could help speed up farming in your downtime but at the arduous pace of farmwork as it effects a single plant part. I do not remember the spell mention ripening or otherwise making the inedible edible.

  • @remor698
    @remor698 Před 4 lety +4

    This one is interesting, because it doesn't have all that much of a straight-forward, primary function, but rather just gives creative players another handy little tool to work with. It can of course be used as a distraction, but other than that it is incredibly situational. If one finds themselves in a forest with gigantic plants, the effect of taking slight control over a plant would be magnified greatly. If a certain plant needs to be in a certain state to become useful to the party, that can be arranged. If you want to drive your DM mad/add a little flavor to your campaign, you could ask for a weather forecast every day.
    It seems there are many uses, but personally, I don't find them all that useful.

    • @ChancesSpellbook
      @ChancesSpellbook  Před 4 lety +1

      The spell specifies that the verbal component is whispered, so since the spell has a 30ft range (compared to prestidigitation only having 10ft) it has a niche use if you're sneaking up on guards or something and want to fake a distraction round the corner, since you're probably not close enough for them to be able to hear your whisper. Likewise, you can snuff an enemies torch or campfire from 30ft away while a prestidigitation caster would have to be within 10ft (and speaking audibly basically right next to them). But for distracting someone you're currently talking to, yes, Minor Illusion is far better since it has a 30ft range and no verbal component at all.
