Today we're going to unbox, setup, and playtest an X-Tool D1 Pro laser cutter and engraver. This is the least expensive of the Xtool line of laser cutters -- we got this one for just $399 during the Black Friday sale and we've been saving it to set up with you!
For those unfamiliar with laser cutters and engravers, these machines use a thin, focused laser beam to cut away material, unlike something like a Cricut Explore or Maker, which uses a blade or rotary tool. And when you use a laser to cut, you can typically cut harder and thicker materials than you could with just a blade. So when you're ready to step up to cutting things like wood with fine detail, a laser cutter and engraver is the best tool.
Because we know many of you are on budgets, we're starting with this bottom rung on the XTool ladder -- the XTool D1 is inexpensive diode laser, but it's also just 5 watts, which is not a powerful laser -- it's capable of detailed engraving and cutting through things like basswood at up to 3 mm thick in one pass, which is just a little over 1/10th of an inch. You CAN get the XTool D1 with higher watt lasers -- 10 watt and 20 watts are available, but they are also more expensive. We are curious what an inexpensive laser cutter can do, and we know you are too!
We are unboxing this live and in real-time, so you can truly see what the experience to set it up is like -- so this won't be a polished video that glosses over issues and makes it all seem super simple. Our goal is to show you what it is really like to set up an inexpensive laser cutter like this and get it going. It's important to note that while we've been using laser cutters for years, we have not ever set up or used an XTool, so this is an authentic unboxing! Our goal is to be able to do a successful test run before we finish. Will it work? Keep watching to find out!
So the XTool D1 is marketed as a good laser engraver and cutting machine for those are just getting interested in laser crafting. This is a DIODE laser cutting machine, which is essentially an LED (Light Emitting Diode) that is SUPER bright and powerful -- the light is pushed through a lens where it is focused to a very narrow point. The XTool D1, for example, has a .06mm ultra-fine compression and can do detailed engravings. Diode lasers can cut solid wood, MDF, leather, cardboard, and some dark acrylics -- diode lasers cannot cut through nor engrave clear acrylics.
Safety - There is an anti-UV filter acrylic that filters 97% of UV rays to protect your eyes and those around you. The engraver machine head is also equipped with a buzzer, which is supposed to sound an alarm when a fire is detected during operation. It will also auto-stop if it is moved or tipped during operation.
The XTool comes with it's own software called Creative Space, and it works on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. The software is free to download and use, so it's a great way to get familiar with laser engraving and cutting before you invest in an Xtool machine. You can get the software at xtool.com/pages/software - Zábava
Thanks for showing us this product. My husband overheard this and we discussed what a great machine this seemed and low and behold unknown to me he purchased one of these for me for Christmas. ( what a lucky lady i am ). I now need more tutorials on laser projects.
I stayed almost the whole time except when I had to get into the car to drive for pickup but listened then. Love how you two work together and finally got it to work. ❤️
Thank you so much Jennifer and Greg, I love this video, you two are great teachers! Just want to say I appreciate you so much.
Wow your endurance is amazing! Love this
Finished watching on the replay, absolutely 😂
Great tutorials! Thank you!
Hello everyone from Kansas.
Mr Maker is patient! Kudos to both of you. Looking forward to seeing the Cricut Cut version!
Wow! Greg, I'm impressed. It only took a few videos for you to became a pro in front of the camera. I love it how confident and talkative you are now! You two are a pleasure to watch! Jennifer you may have created a monster there :)
Beautiful.
This is what I meant by "Patience is a Virtue". You my friends are Virtuous. WTG.
I don't know how I missed this video! What a lifesaver today as my xTool was delivered today. 😆
Glad it helped!🥰
HI from Irene in Louisiana
Good Morning late to the party but so excited to see this!!!!! ❤ thank you Makers 🎄
Love how that tree turned out ❤️🎄🤶🎅
I love to purchase the xtool D1. So many wonderful ideas and projects.
Was there a bonus word for this? I was in hospital and missed Tuesday and Wednesday. Missed you guys😢
Great job greg
Thank you Jennifer and Greg🥰!I was looking at the Xtool to see the price and if it was worth an investment. Greatly appreciate your unboxing!
Our pleasure!
Yay Greg! Wish my bae would craft with me! Thank you for all you do, Jennifer! x
I’ve had mine for a year and I can’t figure it out. I have the 10 wat. I can’t wait for a tutorial. Thank you guys.
Great video!
Was there a bonus word? Just got home from hospital and missed a lot of this😢
If anyone is thinking of this cutter (I have the 20 watt) also get the air assist system, honeycomb base and ventilate very well!
I'm watching replay, but it makes me want to get one. Love ❤️ this.
I’m considering all the options before purchasing.
I have the m1. So fun.
I have an XTool and a Cricut. I would love to make that design on both machines. Do you know when you will be releasing the tutorial for the tree ornament? I could probably make it myself, but you always include tips and tricks which are so helpful! Thank you for all you do for the maker community.
I can't stay for the full parties anymore. Used up too much of my cell service on the 1st laser machine.
Poor X Tool! The Wow Stick kind of stole the show! 😂
Wow jennifer just found your channel. How many cricuts and laser machines do you own. Omg 😮.
A lot! 😂
This doesn't look so....scary to setup. Very nice packaging.
I had bad Internet today and only caught bits of the live. The Internet is back on so I'm re-watching the replay. There are just too many crafting tools to choose from.
which machine works best for long signs
I stayed to the end! Loved the results but, would I buy a laser cutter I am not sure!
Will you be doing tutorials on these lazers?
Please do comparisons of the different brands of laser machines in the future :)
We will. You can see the Glowforge Aura. jennifermaker.com/glowforge-aura-craft-laser/

Thank you for sharing. Great video
Hi Jennifer!
For clear acrylic, could you maybe cut some temporary adhesive vinyl for the backside so it appeared to be colored so the x-tool could cut it?
Possibly, I did hear that some people used color card stock and it worked but I have not tried it out myself yet.
@@JenniferMaker I tried it before with vinyl and it melted the vinyl.
I wish you did the xtool P2. It’s still sitting here in the box.
You can request it here. jennifermaker.com/projectrequests/
Putting a deign on a faux leather volleyball. Not sure if I should use sublimation or HTV
You can use HTV on faux leather, check out the blog. We have a few tutorials with that. 😊🌻
Thanks for the video. I really want to purchase one but I have questions. Can you upgrade to a higher power laser with the same setup? What is the largest size you can engrave or cut on?
No, they don't have that option yet
Can you use this on glass
You mean your work shop and this space shown on line is not at your house?
It should be pointed out that these kind of machines need an enclosure and a ventilation system as they can have serious health implications.
