- In the video today we will make a simple and delicious Homemade chunky ( Original) Branston Pickle that tastes as good as the real thing! It’s made with a mixture diced up vegetables and fruit and cooked slowly for about one hour and a half. This pickle is a British favourite and often served with cheese or the classic ploughman’s lunch that I will show you in the next video.
Ingredients
A splash of oil
1 carrot
1 medium Swede
2-3 garlic cloves
9-10 Prunes
½ Cauliflower
1 onion
1 apple
6 Gherkins
½ courgette
270g Dark brown sugar
2 Tbs Tomato paste
Juice from ½ lemon
350ml Apple cider vinegar
350ml water
1-11/2tbs Mustard
1 tsp Allspice
1 tsp cayenne powder ( use ½ if you don’t like spicy)
Salt & pepper to taste
About 100mlWater (a little extra for the last 30min)
Tips
This is a flexible recipe so if you add a little more or less of one ingredient its ok.
When you fill the pot with water/vinegar it will not look like much but once they vegetables and fruit cook down it will be ok.
Simmer for a hour then check the flavour and consistency. I find that usually and extra 30 min is the right time for the vegetables to have some bite and not be mushy! But feel free to cook a little longer if you want. I usually cook until I have the right sauce consistency. (Total time 1 hour and a half)
Let it cool down a little before placing in jars.
Completely cooled down until you place a lid. I refrigerate mine and they can last several weeks but mine only last about 2 weeks, as it tastes so good.

Thanks for watching. If you like Branston Pickle then I have a few sandwich recipes using this on the channel but my favourite is this one. I hope you enjoy. czcams.com/users/shortseZn66Cn5h0I?feature=share
So I am thinking, to convert this to a diabetic/keto friendly recipe, I would need to remove the brown sugar and dates/prunes and replace with monkfruit sweetener and a thickener like Xanthan Gum - probably add some courgette / zucchini also ?
@@TheHrb1234 Brilliant idea , Let me know how it works , if you have know where to post recipe we can add it here to help people:)
I love British food. When Tesco was in Japan, I could easily buy various ingredients. Nowadays, it costs 25 euros to import one Branston in Japan😭 I will use the pickle and piccalilli recipes as a reference!
I totally understand. I lived in South Korea for over 12 years and now Germany and sometimes you just want some British food:) So I make it now when I crave something from home, so I am Glad to help you too:) enjoy.
Thank you. For 50 years I have been eating the wrong pickle on my cheese and pickle sandwiches! Live and learn:)
I hope you enjoy eating cheese sandwiches even more now:) Have a great weekend.
I am making this right now. It is the third time making it. Perfect recipe. You need to make it before the last batch finishes as it is best having been left in the fridge for at least two weeks before eating. I too live in a very far flung country and really appreciate being able to make my own Branston pickle so thank you very much for this.
Thanks for your kind message, There are certain things we just need ! more recipes from October...If there is any recipe you would like let me know. :)
If you like Branston Pickle then You might also like mu Piccalilli recipe , that I have just posted:)

I am really excited about one of my favourite pickles to use in sandwiches. I will be using this in the next few recipes.
This used to be common in Canadian supermarkets not too long ago but now I can't find it. Thanks for this recipe.
pleasure once you start making it and see how easy it is you wont buy it again:) thanks for watching , have a great week.
Super recipe.I like Branston pickle very much.I will surely try it.
Once you make it yourself there is no going back, Have fun making it and if you have any questions let me know:)
Thank you so much for this recipe, it's difficult to get here in the north of Spain!! Will be making it and remembering when I used to go to the pub precisely for my ploughman's lunch!!
So happy for you. it really is a taste of home. Next weeks video is a ploughman's lunch and sandwich...Thanks for watching.
Thank you for this, I used to be able to get this stuff at a local store here in the states but they closed. So second best idea is making it myself. Now I know how and will try it.😮
Enjoy, thanks for watching.
This was so much fun & delicious to make! Thank you! 🇬🇧😎🍺
Yeahhh great to hear:)
Wow, I have never heard of Branston Pickle, it’s got a little bit of everything 😊 I can just imagine how tasty this would be on a cheese sandwich, as you said. I learned something new from you today, so I thank you for that. 🥰. I’m a new foodie friend from Texas, sticking around for your next cook. Excited about that 💕👍🏻
Welcome friend:) thanks for saying Hi.
How is Branston pickle unlike a chutney?
It's very sour
@@junjunmacam2894 it’s not. It sweet and tangy. Branston Pickle is just a brand name for ploughman’s pickle which is a chutney and is traditionally eaten in England with a ploughman’s lunch, which consists of crusty bread & butter, a big wedge of cheese, ham, with tomato, salad, & a pickled onion or two on the side.
What???? I absolutely love pickles and so does my two grand children. Never seen any recipe like this and yes this would be delicious on sandwiches especially burgers. Thanks so much. 👍
Thank you.
This is a great pickle recipe. Tks for sharing.

너무 맛있어요 !! 와우 ~
고맙습니다 . 치즈와 정말 잘 어울려요 :)
This is similar to giardiniera but richer! Looks so good!!
yes, similar but this has a very rich taste.
This is totally new to me!
With a cheese sandwich its so delicious and a great way to use up vegetable left overs.
Very nice👌👍👍
oh thanks :)
Thank you so much for making this tutorial I'm a qualified chef by trade but never really ventured into pickles, I think the closest I got was a caramelised onion chutney. Anyway, I've become a massive fan of cheese and pickle sandwiches and wraps and got to thinking I can take them to another level with homemade pickle, well here I am watching your video whilst on my lunch break at work. I've got all the ingredients other than prunes which I'll get ready for the weekends cooking session.
Thanks again.

Welcome, You also gained a new subscriber , I love watching fishing videos while editing my videos:) I used to fish for trout as a child.
@Auntie A's Kitchen That's great, thank you, Fishing and cooking can be very therapeutic.
@@BivvyLife agree , My parents in England live next to a massive carp lake , I spend hours up there in the summer watching and it is indeed relaxing.
Mmmmm cheese, pork pie and branston
Perfect combination:)
Hi, I know this is an old video but I wondered if you had a rough idea of the quantity this recipe makes for the ingredient amounts used? I'd like to make some to give for Christmas gifts. Thanks, great recipe and easy to follow. :)
Hi there, thats a great question , I had to go back and watch my video ha ha . I made two large jars and half a smaller one. I am sorry I do not know the total amount but If you are making gifts then I think 4-5 smaller jars would work. This is a very ambiguous answer please forgive me. I hope you enjoy as much as my family do...Its a great gift to give. Have a wonderful week, Amanda
@@Amandafusion1 No that was helpful, thank you!
Wow looks delicious great sharing 😋
Thank you for watching:)
Couldn’t get them from Korea!! Thanks for the recipe :)
Pleasure:) Thanks for the message.
Hi, thanks for your recipe, i have been longing for pickle since my last time in england back in 2017. I was wondering what can i use instead of swede since it doesnt exist here in Argentina, thank you in advance
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I seem to have missed some comments. Try some turnip or parsnip as these are also sweet as they cook . Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching, have a great week.
Hi, thanks for your recipe I made it today but for my taste far too sweet other than that it is very nice. Going to make it again this week with probably 180 g of sugar spices spot-on. Thank you very much for your recipe
Great to hear. Thank you for the feedback really appreciate this. Let me know how less sugar goes once you have made it. Have a great week.
Bruh I just wanted to know what was in Branston pickles beside pickles 😆 based on their appearance in other vids I honestly just expected it to be pickles and molasses or maple syrup. This on the other hand is a whole fruit and veggie salad plus sugar, spices, and condiments. Whoever had the mind to combine all these flavors in a way that thousands of ppl enjoy was a genius
Totally agree, it just makes a cheese sandwich perfect. Thanks for watching, have a wonderful week:)
i am gonna try this one for sure!! My english friend sent me brantston pickle and ruined my life.
You can not beat a cheese and pickle sandwich!
I wonder if this is a good recipe for the pressure canner.
oh, never tried this , as I like to keep an eye on the consistency of the liquid but if you try it please let me know so we can let others know an alternate way to make this. Thanks for dropping in , have a great end of week.
What is the 2nd vegetable you added?
Hi there Here are all the vegetables I use, Thanks for watching, have a wonderful week. Amanda
1 carrot, 1 medium Swede ,9-10 Prunes, ½ Cauliflower. 1 onion, 1 apple, 6 Gherkins, ½ courgette
How long can you store this for? Thanks
ha ha i have never kept it for long because we eat it so quickly , if opened i don't keep it longer than two weeks .
@@Amandafusion1 It stores well in the fridge, I usually make more quantity than the recipe because all the chopping is such a bore but well worth it.
Is there a substitute for swede? I live in Indonesia and I don't think I've ever seen a swede in supermarkets here.
I think you could try turnip. :)
4:00 Was that Welsh? Or possibly Scots Gaelic?
Hey there, I had to go to check it out ha ha it was Korean. I used to live in Korea but now in Germany . A good Guess though. Thanks for watching to the end:) ⭐️. Have a wonderful weekend.
So you're not actually giving us the recipe. That's useful.
I think you might be mistaken? 😜and have not seen the recipe. You can find all the recipes for any of my videos in the description:) just look below the video. I hope this helps, if you cant find it let me know and I will post it here for you:) have a nice week. Thanks for watching. Amanda
Are you simple, the recipe is right there in the description
It's not chunky, chutnee and whatever . It's called chutney
I thought I said Chutney and this one is the junky version, I am sorry it came across different. In England we have 2 different Branston pickle styles (chunky and small) My family prefer the larger pieces and we call this chunky Branston in England. Do you not call this chunky? Thank you for watching:) have a great weekend.
Pointless. It won't be cheaper and it won't be better and it won't keep as long.
Thanks ekspatriat I agree you a little 😉but when I lived abroad and could not get anything sent easily then this saved me! and it was great to give as gifts, also if you make small batches then it does not last long anyway. There is also something so rewarding when eating home made food and I guess depends on your character. Thanks for watching, have a great week.
I don't think it's pointless because it won't last long. Because I'll have munched it all up
