    Pre-pandemic, those parking lots were full. They regularly made termporary lots to accomodate additional commuters. Things have changed however since Covid.

      I can only imagine. It's a shame what Covid did to passenger numbers across the US, but fortunately it seems that most commuters are returning to their regular routes.

    Yeah, the comet II cars are from the 80s and got refurbished 20 long years ago.

    NJ transit needs an overhaul. Long Island Rail Road, there is a bathroom in ever other cart. Off peak and zone tickets discounts. Makes it a pleasure. However, the 100 mph is impressive. Yes, Hamilton stop is close, but not close to the neighborhoods. You are right, you do catch some speed trains going by. Great Content..

    They also close the cars off to concentrate the passengers into a smaller space. Meaning less walking for the conducters

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  Před 2 lety +1

      Ah, that makes sense. But it seems weird that they would also deny such a basic service as a bathroom.

    Thanks for sharing a cool video. Brought back some great memories of my trips to NYC and NJ in the last few years. I had also noticed over that time how some trains seem dated and others are quite modern and comfortable. I was always amazed at how Penn Station in Manhattan is so cramped yet it still serves so many passengers each day. I’ve only been to Newark Penn once and that was transiting through to change trains. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks for stopping by! It seems that NJTs fleet varies wildly and can consist of single or bilevel coaches, which means inconsistent comfort on different rides. I hope that NJT invests in some better cars in the future, but I highly doubt we'll see anything for at least the next 5 or so years.

    Just so you know, you can flip the seatbacks on the Comets and the Arrows if you want to swap between the four-person seating layout and the bench layout.

    5:58 The same thing happened when I filmed my NJT trip report, the first car was blocked off and turns out the only bathroom on the train was there too!

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  Před 2 lety +3

      Really unreasonable to not have access to a bathroom on such a long journey. The full length of the trip from start to finish is just over 90 minutes, which is quite a while to not have a bathroom on. It seems like all of their bilevel rollingstock have bathrooms in every car, but the older stuff doesn't, which is really annoying.

      @@LonestarTrips Not all the multilevels have bathrooms, but the ones that do are distributed pretty well throughout the trains. The single-level push/pull fleet, particularly on the Newark Division, is a mess. None of the Comet IIM's (cars without center doors) have bathrooms...some of them had bathrooms before they were refurbished in the 2000s, but they were all removed, and there are a lot of Comet IIM's scattered into the consists. The IIM's and the IVs (whose interior design they were refurbished to copy) are in bad shape. I rode the Comet IIs a lot before they were refurbished and maybe it's just nostalgia, but I think the original interiors were in better shape at age 20, pre-rebuild, than the new ones are 20 years after the rebuild. Meanwhile on the Hoboken diesel lines, which handle a tiny fraction as many passengers, all single-level push-pull trains are 100% Comet Vs, which are generally in better condition.

    Although I only use NJ Transit's Atlantic City Line, I do know the frustration when the conductors block off the car with the only bathroom

  • @bigjohnrailproductions8370

    Just to add on. Secaucus junction serves NJT Main Bergen Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines including meadowlands line (for sports or other entertainment only). Newark Penn station subs Raritan valley line and Newark light rail to Newark Broad Street station Morris & Essex Gladstone line and Monclair Boonton. Rahway slips off for the North Jersey Coast line to Long Branch and Bay Head. At the time of the video you made they are now beginning construction on the portal project replacing the portal swing bridge and two new tunnels to Penn station New York since the old tunnel for 1910 was damage from Super storm Sandy in October 2012. The reason they put the bar up is basically social distance or others in their own judgment. Well you did a pretty good job on the review.

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks for all the awesome information! I was unaware that the portal project had actually broken ground, as I was still under the impression that it was in its final engineering stages of planning, but it's awesome to hear they're actually getting on with the replacement!

    The conductors used to flip the seat backs when they would arrive at Penn Station so the passengers would face the flow of traffic.

    5:57 I’ve seen a lot of railroads do this in the event of a car collision and subsequent fire. But the entire Northeast Corridor (except for some points in Connecticut) is grade separated. And the entire NJT NEC section is completely grade separated… not sure why they had it blocked off..

    Normally the seats all face one direction. Those cars are a little older than the double decker cars. They’re from around the 1990s/2000s.

    hello it's been a while since I last rode njt but every cab car should have a bathroom or at least used to so that the engineers don't have to walk all the way back to the engine if they have to stop and go to the bathroom during a trip with the engine in the back, in the past NJT had a 80 mile per hour speed restriction on all of its trains to reduce wear and tear it may have been raised to 100 miles per hour recently, as for the last car being closed well Train crews want some privacy and don't want to deal with people all day nonstop and the last car has a clean bathroom for train crew use after seeing how people piss on the toilet seat .
