  • Using Fame for Change: Sylvana Simons
Sylvana Simons' career has taken similar trajectories as that of Paul Robeson. Descendent of enslaved Africans working on the Surinamese plantations, Simons came to national attention in The Netherlands as a TV entertainer. At the height of her publicity, she elected to dedicate her life to social and economic justice forming the radically inclusive grassroots party BIJ1 (former Artikel1). In this session, Simons will examine the tradeoffs and challenges she is facing as she instrumentalises her notoriety for a better world.

All the hate this women had to endure in the Netherlands for speaking out for equality is honestly disgusting, from death threats to photoshopped lynching pictures, it's really disgusting, and all she did and is doing is advocating for equality and nothing more. It's very clear to me that the right wing Dutch people (not all) hate this woman because she's black and has the views that she has, its this combination, after all back in the the day black people weren't allowed to have an opinion and now that this woman is stating her's they don't know how to deal with it in a normal and civilized way. it's a shame it really is.
