  • BG180 - restoration and service of a Thorens TD-135 turntable. This uses the same E50 motor and drive system as the famous Thorens TD-124. Rebuilt the motor including the sintered bronze bushings, motor mounts, rubber grommets, idler wheel, and lubrication. Also fixed the drooping tonearm counterweight issue. Replaced the start cap and cleaned and waxed the plinth. A fun project for sure.
    You may have to contact this seller but this is who I got the part for the tonearm weight from:

    This is a great video and gives me confidence to work on Thorens idler drive tables, and likely others as well, such as Lenco, older Duals, etc.

    Aw Man. I've had this deck for a few years. Reliable for the most part, but that sagging tone arm always annoyed me. Watching your video gave me the confidence to attempt a small fix. Honestly, I spent about 10 hrs on that tone arm housing- horrible configuration in there. I managed to replace the back tone arm stock, but never got that darned tracking weight spring back through the eyelet. The little cue lever spring won't go back on either. I should have left the thing well alone! I run the 135 for 78s, so all is not lost....
    Best.

    It's worth trying MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) to restore the rubber on the original idler wheel. I've not tried it on a Thorens unit, but it works miracles with Garrard.

    Nicely build TT, i really like how overengeneered esome parts are, especially the idler and pulleys. I personally can recomend the Elac 22H. Its maybe not as massive, but i has an Papst motor and great working auto function. Both were comparable in price when new, but the Elacs can be found for a fraction of the price of Thorens.

    Very informative. While I have a TD-124 and TD-224, have always wanted a TD-135. I like the auto stop feature. I kind of opened up a can of worms by replacing the original shell on my TD-224 with a TP- 50 shell. It is so much lighter than the original that I can't quite balance the tonearm. Even with counter-weight up as close to the pivot as possible, the arm floats up, and can't be balanced to zero. I suppose I could look for a heavier cartridge than my Shure M-55E, and realize that an easy fix would be to add a little additional weight to the shell, but with the TP-50 there's no where to hide it. I'm too proud to tape a coin on the shell! Do you know if there might be a slightly lighter counter-weight that might work?

    Does the arm have a height adjustment? Is s replacement Thorens headshell designed with newer cartridge dimensions in mind? How do you plan to keep the cartridge parallel to the record?

  • @1mctous
    @1mctous Před 6 lety +1

    I hope that your customer purchases the newer TP-50 headshell. They could buy an additional TP-50 to mount a mono LP/78 cartridge (Nagaoka MP-series cartridges have plug-in styli at 1.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 4.0 mil). I presume they already have either a high-gain phono preamp or step-up transformer for the Denon DL-103. Denon's current version has 8.5 g mass, so hopefully that's within range for the counterweight. One more precaution; the ferrous plinth could increase the tracking force since it's not as well shielded as vintage cartridges.

    • @Blueglow
      @Blueglow  Před 6 lety +1

      The 135 doesn't have the same ferrous plinth issue the 124 does from what I've been told.

    @rickg8015 Před 6 lety

    Thanks for your effort in sharing this.. Where did you source your belt? I find the original/stock belt still the quietest for the 124..
    I was a hoping to see a more detailed disassembly/assembly of the E50 motor along with the kit from Audiosilente. Cleaning and lubing and then aligning before “locking” everything up. Maybe when a TD-124 comes your way.

      I'm going to have to rebuild my 124's motor eventually, this was a helpful video! While researching the job, found a few warnings that one cannot use just any old oil in the motor! The wrong composition can seize the bushings!

    One thing I ended up doing was getting a deep paper plate and centering it upside down on the turntable and placing my phone directly in the middle. My thinking was it would record wow and flutter results more accurately using the app. In other words, my phone is rotating right over the axis, not off to one side possibly creating an imbalance in the platter.

  • @nicholasgeorgeliatos1529

    Insightful! Where can you get the tone arm cables from?

  • @RobertKohut
    @RobertKohut Před 6 lety +3

    Just a thought. Perhaps Thorens, in all their engineering glory, may have used rubber in the tone arm construction to reduce or eliminate some resonance between the counterweight and tone arm. Replacing it with a solid plastic piece my not be a great idea. In real world listening perhaps it might be discernable, but engineering for great sound is engineering for great sound, with every little thing creating a synergistic effect. Just a thought...LOL

    • @Blueglow
      @Blueglow  Před 6 lety +1

      Thought about that but no one sells the replacement rubber and in the grand scheme of things, I think it would be so minimal if any effect at all.

    That little plate inside the headshell, why not just fabricate a new that would accommodate a new cartridge?
    One with the right screws and right hight?
    Shouldn't be that hard to do.

  • @bzuidgeest
    @bzuidgeest Před 6 lety +7

    With all of your skills, why would you buy a 75 dollar cable from Greece??? Its a cable with two plugs and some hot shrink tube. You could do it yourself in 5 minutes. Even if the green part is special magic cable, mouser or digikey will be happy to deliver it to your door for a fraction of the price. I really thought you were more levelheaded about these things.
    ps. I do agree with replacing the cord with something nicer/cleaner, but you succeeded and then went overboard on that.

    • @rickg8015
      @rickg8015 Před 6 lety

      Bart Zuidgeest Maybe he gets the Mogami cables cheaper from from Greece? And custom preassembled with connectors too?

    • @bzuidgeest
      @bzuidgeest Před 6 lety +1

      A quick google gave cable that from mogami at $1,50 to .99 cent per feet. 6feet cable (est. used to meters here) gives a grand total of 9 dollar plus the most expensive cinch plugs i found (neutrik) at say 25 dollar for a pair (insane price). That is still less then 40 dollars and I know mr Blueglow know how to stick on a few plugs to a cable.
      If you just pay for quality cable instead of branded cable and connector you most likely could go below 20 dollar easily. I did not want so say outright but this sounded a lot like audiofoolery that is just not needed. But its his or his customers money and they are free to spend it the way they want.
      Maybe the do not sell mogami in the US, but they must have other quality cables?

    • @garybevis8691
      @garybevis8691 Před 5 lety +1

      Yes you can get Mogami wire here in the US, I buy it all the time. I save hundreds of $$$$ making my own cables, SMA, BNC, RCA, etc...I was thinking the same thing about $75 for the tonearm wire...Hi end audio is where the money can be made. Some people have more money than sense.
