    To me, the whole "Russian helping a non-Russian" thing is evidence that the game of chess really does transcend national boundaries. I mean, let's be real here. Very few people cared or maybe even realized that Magnus and Nepo were "representing" specific countries. They're just two fantastic players duking it out for the world title.

      OK, but on the other hand, title "Chess champion _insertYear_" because a strange thing for me personally. If you pick two GMs in top 20 (or maybe top 50), every pair could draw 14 games straight. Such is the state of chess in current times. Nepo had to try to create imbalances, because if you look back, after ~20-25 moves in every game they could start trading to oblivion and draw the game.

    • @MAC0071234
      @MAC0071234 Před 2 lety +30

      I think Fressinet had said that he would of course be on the team MVL. I think it was in the World Cup commentary (I could be wrong about the event) where he was commentating with Jan Gustafson for chess24. Unlike the common misconception about the French people, they are actually very patriotic.
      I don't think Ian minds though, although they are very good friends and also teammates, so it could be very awkward. Even if they don't say anything or behave as if its not a big deal. Cos even if one of them doesn't even think about it, the other guy might have that nagging feeling that the other person is thinking about it.
      Frankly I am a bit surprised cos I thought Dubov WAS on the Nepo team. Especially since Nepo's and Dubov's style is so similar. It would have been great to have him analyse certain positions for Ian and come up with stuff that would actually naturally be great for Ian. On the other hand, having Dubov on Magnus's team would have been such an asset since its pretty much like having Ian on Magus's team. Lolz.

    • @martinpaddle
      @martinpaddle Před 2 lety +2

      I don't think Magnus having a Russian coach on its own would have been such an issue. It's a bit different, becasue Dubov is a teammate of Ian. The play under the same federation and in the same team at team championships and Olympiads. Hiddink, Capello, and Eriksson (as England coach) didn't have a function for their home federation at the time. Hikaru, for example, said in his stream that he wouldn't accept an invitation to be Magnus' second if he was facing Caruana or Wesley So. It's like saying to your teammate: sorry, but I wanted your opponent to win. Now Dubov makes the argument that the world champtionship is an individual award, you represented yourself and not your country, and he happens to feel closer to Magnus. He's right in my opinion, but the coach analogy is still not quite correct.

    • @martinpaddle

      @@vahiddj81 it doesn't matter. A foreign coach in football would never have any paid role within his home country's federation, as player or else. The argument in Dubov's favour here is that Magnus is playing against Nepo as an individual, and not as a representative of the Russian Chess federation.

      Karjakin is a Putin supporter. After the match with Carlsen he started to take part in some political activities. He is a member of Civic chamber of Russian Federation. It's government agency. And for our government it is like this: you with us or you against us. There is this thinking. But there was a poll in one popular russian sport website. And only 15% support Karjakin's opinion. So it's all good.

    I like Nepo as a strong player and an individual. Are we live in fischer era?
    I mean we live in a more open era and russia should be proud they have a lot of strong GM that helps other players outside russia, even though the world championship title is not from russia but the fact russia dominate chess is undeniable

    I would only assume that Dubov has experience against Nepo, perhaps playing in regional tournaments against him. It makes sense.

    Maybe a serie of the world chess championship between Magnus and Karjakin would be nice on the mood of this last match.

    Me who knows nothing about chess: "Ah yes, I was completely expecting that. So obvious."

      Even if he wasn't paid as well as he did, he is close friends with Magnus. He already said that it's better to be in a team that like each other contrary to the Russian teams where it's all elo and no synergy.

    Ian didn't represent Rusia since Rusia have cheated so much they are not allowed to participated in any international game/sport under their own flag. Besides it is pretty normal to have trainers and staff from any nation in any games/sports where they risk playing against there own country
