- Two British passengers returning from Jamaica come under the suspicion of officer Liz. They say they've never touched drugs, but police checks reveal one of the suspects has been in prison for heroin dealing. In Dover, two Bulgarian drivers promise officers they have no cigarettes, but a quick search finds over 10,000 hidden in the lining of the truck's cab.
In Gatwick and Bristol Airports in England customs agents check baggage and travellers to uphold allowances and prevent illicit activity and substances from entering the UK.

After the dogs pick them out and their luggage lights up world, It amazes me how these officers can keep a straight face when they ask "are you sure you've never used or smoked anything?"
It doesn't take much to get enough triggering amount. Walk through a room where people were using and your shoes may gather that amount. Sit on a couch were people were using and it's on your pants. Similar to cigarette smoke residue or gunpowder residue.

Copping an attitude is literally the worst thing anyone can do if they are being questioned at an airport, especially the ones with previous drug convictions…

My friend works for TSA in Boston and he told me they fill a small dumpster every week with expensive scotch, bourbon, wine, etc and no one is allowed to touch any of it, all gets destroyed. How sad.

We don't know that they definitely didn't have any. The officers reached the end of their available line of investigation. Had they detained them both and examined their ... output ... for 24 hours, things may have turned out different.

Drugs can be put inside the shoelaces, suitcase, the handle of the suitcase, socks, in other words, all over the place. As an investigator/customs officer, you need to feel all the items with your hands If you wanna find the drugs. Dear officers, use your hands and feel the items, in other words, touch and feel, feel, feel.....

Of course, they did X-ray the suitcases though...personally I think it's obvious that they were using recently (i.e., tying their shoes after doing a bump), and they'd probably smuggled in the past or gotten the suitcases from somebody who had.

I have read your comment, and as funny as it may sound, i have never heard of it. But i went on googling it and I reckon you are right. Their clothes were soaked in it! Hence the reading was as high as officers could get it, what these two individuals did was they went home and reversed a process in a lab and got all their cocaine back 😁 no wonder officers were frustrated

Nicotine is so underrated as an addictive substance. People go smuggle cigarettes even though they're legal. So either they consume way more than they can afford, or there's a large enough market of the same kind of people they can then sell it to. But if it's only about money, there are other substances that are easier to smuggle and much more valuable.
On the other hand, the amount of repression just because people paid less elsewhere for the exact same product is also ridiculous.

A carton of marlboros cost about $160.00 in the UK, the reason they have such high taxes is because the UK like most of europe has socialised medicine .so since the individual doesn't directly pay for for their own health care the government tries to offset the increased cost of medical care that smokers tend to have trough taxation , which in my opinion is a pretty fair concept .
Also by making cigarettes very expensive it makes smokin/ a less attractive habit to young people , and also curbs the overall use of cigarettes.
Ultimately cigarette use cost the society much more money then it gains trough taxes , another idea for those who are into individual liberties , would not tax cigarettes , and instead allow smokers to buy cigs duty free but they would have to wave any rights to future state provided health care due to any tobacco related issues

Don't know about other countries but in the US if you get caught at the border for any infraction it goes on a permanent record with Customs and Border. Every time you try to cross the border in the future you will be questioned and or searched. I saw it happen to a colleague who tried to enter without declaring the beer he bought in Canada (attempting to evade customs duty). Almost 20 years later he was leaving Canada after a night of just partying and he was singled out and searched based on his past record.

Most people do understand limitations, on what you can, and can not bring back with you. They don't pay the tax, by declaring it, only to get caught by customs, which will fine them, seize it, or maybe even jail time, if they keep pushing the limits! 😕

@@surveyguyor8958 Yes they know and they know that the normal price for cigarettes in the UK is fairly high so they buy dozens of cartons of cheap cigarettes hoping to get them pass customs thus making a small profit. Those that do get through know that they can make the quick sale at a local corner market. Thing is the risk is not worth the reward (since at best they will make maybe around $500-$1,000.

Many drugs come through but when you roll the dice over and over you will get snake eyes at some point and considering some countries laws it's probably not worth the risk.

I'm mystified why the chap smuggling 5,200 cigarettes from Pakistan had the cigarettes seized but was not required to pay the duty evaded whilst the truck drivers had their cigarettes seized and had to pay the duty evaded before their trucks were released. Inconsistent application of the law ?
I'm no expert in this but I believe that entering the UK for commercial purposes is different from entering as a UK citizen returning from a holiday. The driver was lucky he got his truck back at all, since he was a smuggler and the customs service could hold his truck while the case is heard in court and if found guilty the truck could be permanently impounded..
