I like the drow minis, always need more of them.
They're quite the highlight of the set!
While I agree that more zombies is good, I’m not a fan of the recent trend of warband repaints in the blind boosters. It takes away the excitement for me. Though, if they insist on continuing this trend, I’d like it to at least translate to cheaper boosters given that they didn’t need to design a new mini or make new molds (or whatever they use to manufacture them).
I agree. It’s probably fine for those who don’t buy the warband sets but I think they’re veering into a position of actively discouraging people from buying the Warbands in case the next set has them anyway.
I do agree im not a big fan, but at least they used different paint jobs! Like the elf zombie now looks like a Drow

Fun fact: there’s actually another one from from the War Drums set of D&D Miniatures (DDM) from 2006. It’s on a proper tiny sized base and is number 29. Though this is the first one from WizKids.
Fun fact, Nezznar, both the mini and the artwork of him in the book, is basically identical to the Drow Archmage art from the Monster Manual. As such we do already have a mini of this guy too, from Rage of Demons!

Having so many repaints is a letdown from someone who bought the Warband, but at least a few work as alternate races like a Duergar instead of a Dwarf. Also hate NPC minis like Nezznar being anything but a Rare but I'm one who buys a whole case so I'll end up with multiple. Would have like swapped slots with the Gibbering Mouther.

Really like this set, even if it has a few more zombies than really needed and, a rare Roper and Gibbering Mouther... I'll be getting a case and hoping for a few drows, psionic goblins (wich i plan the use as monks and spellcasters) and hopefully 1 mind flayer!

This set looks to be a good starter like you said, especially for those looking to run their first Underdark adventure. I think the Psionic Goblin sculpts would be a nice addition to any collection, but I think this set is really lacking in the penguin department. Honestly once you get to Dohwar rescue scene is when this adventure really took off. Or did it? 😏

I agree that fewer pc minis or pc minis as rare minis is better then having dozens of human fighters
This is such a great set! I think my only disappointment is that there is still no uncommon mind flayer, with 5 in this set i was hoping at least 1 would be, definitely need a mind flayer warband
So, I've had that elder brain dragon mini for quite a while now, and have been planning on a mind flayer invasion in my next campaign (which is starting in March, after over half a year of delays) I've been picking up various mind flayers over the last year, this is great to have a few new unique sculpts.

It’s a great looking mini for a creature that appears in a surprising number of adventures I’ve played in for community written adventures league, as well as official modules/adventures by WoTC.
As you said too it appears in large groups sometimes as well…I really wish it took the spot of one of those zombies instead.

Theo I agree that the Gibbering Mouther being in a rare slot is no bueno. I love Roper minis so I would be ok having another one to go with the several I already have. The Shambling Mound is definitely the King in this set IMO. I'll be looking to add a few on the secondary market. Great review as always.
It's a shame there weren't any penguin sculpts in this set, my party enjoyed the little group of them and wanted to travel with them to the Icewind Dale where they would be more comfortable.
That was one of the highlights of the campaign for me. The twist at the end was maybe the best thing yet in 5e!

Interesting set! Will pick up a case as usual. I think Bigby’s is the better starter mini set (with multiple orcs, hobgoblins, bugbears) but this one is pretty great too.

And you are correct some of the rarities make no sense. Nezznar is a named character, and a boss, he should have been a Rare, while the CR8 Drow Priestess should have been an Uncommon. Also, the last Roper in RoD was an Uncommon too, you find them in clusters, and it is low CR. They should have made the Ettin Ceremorph a Rare in its stead. Same goes for the Gibbering Mouther, like the MM3 one, it should have been an Uncommon.
We’re going to get Mark Moreland on soon to talk more about the process of selecting rarity. I think it’ll be quite enlightening.

So it look like, if you combine this set with the Tyranny of Dragons set, you should be able to cover most of the Monsters. (Though, I haven't read the Shattered Obelisk part)
The only thing missing would be an Ogre and Skeletons.
Would have been cool to see a Glassstaff mini or possibly some of the Named Townsfolk. Barthen, Toblen, Linene, Sildar, Gundren or Harbin Wester come to mind.
Especially since Barthen, Toblen, Linene and Harbin are in the Essentials as well.
I have to imagine that we’ll get a Phandalin NPC set or two at some point, right?
The zombie warband was too expensive for me so the zombies in this set are great.
Hehe you would not be asking "what sets Troglodytes apart from other savage Underdark races" if you had met one! The answer is, the SMELL! Troglodytes communicate by stench pheromones and to anyone but their race, this is an incredibly disgusting nauseating experience, meaning you best not try to fight them in close combat or you get sickened. :D
If you recall the 4E funny cartoons, there was one about a Mind Flayer looking for thralls that had a great joke with a Troglodyte farting due to nervousness during the job interview and trying to explain it as communication. :D
Oh I didn’t know that! I don’t know if any of that is even mentioned anywhere in the 5e lore. I still feel like 5e is quite lore-light which is really unfortunate.
@@TheGallantGoblin Yeah I checked, the MM only mentions their god Laogzed. I think that is why books like Volo's Guide and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes were important (and more recently Bigby's and Fizban's) to flesh out monster groups better. I am still hoping for a proper Demonicon like in 3E.
Would be great! I was disappointed that the player races got such little lore in MoM. The monsters have the same problem. Would love a few more dedicated lore books.
I picked up a brick and my rares were the three Drow minis and a roper. I’m thinking of getting another brick to get literally any other rares. Are the combinations of rare miniatures fixed? In other words, is it a 1 in 4 chance to get the same rares? Or did I just get really unlucky?
As far as we can tell, there are usually a few different combos of rares per brick. It doesn’t seem to be just 4. I think there’s a chance you could get the exact same set of rares, or some overlap. But it’s not a high chance. Can also trade the extra rares or buy individuals of the rares you want.
I picked up a second brick and got chishinx, mind flayer clairvoyant, and oculorb as my rares. I also got a few uncommons that I missed with my first brick. Overall, I’m pretty happy with my pulls. I might snag the rest in the aftermarket at some point. In the meantime, I picked up some unpainted mind flayers to try my hand at to fill the void.
I must have got the same distribution as you, all 3 rare Drow and Roper not a Mind Flayer in sight :( Bit worried by the lack of Psi goblins also, think I got 1 of each, better hope for 1s on that 1D6 or buy another brick. They really should have been common instead of all those Zombies.

Dear lord, I thought the paint jobs in the past few years were bad.. then I saw this set. They've dropped to a further tier down in quality. I didnt think that was possible.

I’m actually not a fan of all the zombies but otherwise this looks like a good set.
This is, like Dragonlance, another set I am skipping a brick or case of. There are some truly amazing and cool monsters in it that I definitely want multiples of like the Blue Slaad, Hook Horror, Giant Spider, Stirge, Wolf, Troglodyte (weird in 10 years we only had 1 of these in Elemental Evil) and the finally Common rarity Flameskull, to name a few. There are also very cool Drow, Zombies and Mind Flayers in the set. But, there are also creatures I don't need as to be frank they don't fit into my style of D&D and feel more like something out of Lovecraft, like the Psionic Goblins, Corrupted Villagers, Encephalons, Oculorb. There are also those I would only need one of and would be hard to sell the rest off, like the Otyugh or the Cloaker mutations, or the repainted Zombies. Plus then there are some I am skipping entirely, like Mr. Saladfingers (Hashutu).
So for this set, I have mostly purchased the singles I need from a webshop, still trying to get a few. I do wish they finally made an Uncommon Shambling Mound, it is a much required mini but same as the one in Eberron, this remains a Rare.
Yeah, would be amazing if that shambling mound had been an uncommon. Fair call that in a lot of ways it does end up being a surprisingly specific set in many ways.
This is set pretty god even if you don't plan to run this campaign.

I'm sad to see the massive variation in painting quality between some of these minis and others. It makes buying them such a risk, since the bad ones look truly awful. Such a shame as there are some real stand out minis in here, and most of the sculpts are decent to impressive.
The change of art for the Drow Matron Mother from tome of Foes to Monsters of the Multiverse was a real downgrade.
True. Though that would be a tough one to make a mini of.
The paint jobs on the reprints don't look as detailed. There is less shading and small details like the eyes aren't done as well.

Those paint jobs are horrible :( I'm no expert painter, but I could slap that together and make it look a lot better in no time. The previous WizKids minis had been going up in quality, but this seems like a slide back. Too bad, since these are so iconic and would be many players introduction to the game.
