If a person has had a HCT 49-52 and a Hemoglobin of 16-18.5 for past 3 years with complete work up of all blood panels by a hematologist 2 years ago with all levels normal but the two…with no known cause found. Should a patient try to lower that value and how? Did do a whole blood donation 3 times in last two years but didn’t see a drop in the levels. Donations were 1 pint once 6 months apart then last two 1 pint were 60 days apart with no seen drop from hemoglobin 18.5 to 60 days later 18.5. Non smoker. Never taken testosterone. 66 year old male. Levels seem to run in the upper normal levels even 7 years ago but not borderline or over like in the last 3 years.

I've trained in functional medicine for the last decade or so and no reason to lower unless you are experiencing symptoms and if there is an underlying cause not yet detected. What I suggest is checking your ferritin levels as a starting point. If all is normal there, then do a sleep study to rule out sleep apnea. Also, make sure you hydrate well before doing blood tests. There are other tests you can do, but the ones I mentioned are a start.
