The thing that baffles me is that next year this movie will be 20 years old. This movie was way ahead of it's time.
I am cackling at the fact that the more this review goes on, the angrier and more confused Will gets. He also slips deeper and deeper into his accent. He started this movie out so optimistically, too. I just want to give him a hug.
Meanwhile, George is just BASKING in Will's misery while genuinely enjoying the movie. A true friend.

The film was written off as an offensive adaptation of Dr Seuss' seminal work, but I think the film has been vastly misunderstood. The film is a deconstruction of a mentally ill Cat man, struggling to come to terms with his problems. He invades the lives of two children hoping to help them, but instead he nearly destroys their lives - this is a game changing moment for the Cat, who then changes his ways and helps the kids overcome their adversity whilst he overcomes his mental illness. The humour, which was panned in 2003, was ahead of it's time - with the film portraying dark and sarcastic behavior along with clever innuendo, which would have become memeable had been released today. Emmanuel Lubezki's cinematography is up there with his most acclaimed work like The Tree Of Life and The Revenant, perfectly capturing the madness of the Cat via precise framing, projecting a sense of unease on the audience. Bo Welch's energetic direction evokes shades of both Wes Anderson and David Lynch, creating psychedelic imagery which matches perfectly with the film's quirky yet almost sinister production design. And to top all off, Mike Myers delivers an Oscar worthy performance as the Cat, perfectly capturing the confused insanity of a mentally ill anthropomorphic cat who can't deal with his problems so he just creates chaos as a coping mechanism, all through that heavy but beautifully applied costume.
A modern masterpiece.

Fun fact, Dr Seuss' wife hated The Cat In The Hat movie so much, she took away the rights and wouldn't let anyone else make a film about a Dr Seuss book. She agreed to Horton Hears a Who but had be put on staff so she could closely monitor it to ensure she approved it.
