- So as I ride more and more, my Trek Marlin 7 has really given me the opportunity to do a ton of riding at so many different places. As I get a feel for what I like best, I am also seeing how different configurations on your mountain bike can really support the type of riding you want to do. The standard bontrager handlebars came with a 5mm rise and are attached to a 80mm stem. While a great setup for cross country, my riding recently has made me feel like I have way too much weight over the front end. My PNW Cascade dropper post has allowed me to better shift weight towards the rear but I'm still really stretched out. After some research, I decided to look for handlebars with a higher rise and a shorter stem. While I was at it, I figured I'd try some new grips that so many people have recommended. Check out this video to see the unboxing and install of the PNW Range Handlebars KW Edition (780mm, 30mm rise), PNW Range Stem Gen3, and the PNW Loam grips. I upgraded my Trek Roscoe 6 with Bontrager Line Pro 35 Stem and the Bontrager Line Pro 35 Carbon Bar with the Ergon GD1 Evo Grips. Made a HUGE difference and love it. Great Video! 🇺🇸
As I keep riding and learning what I like in a bike and type of terrain, it’s nice upgrading parts to better suit my riding style. How are you liking the upgrades you put on?
Have all this on a 2020 Marlin 5 that Ive rebuilt. They all rock! PNW is the best!
Agree 100%
Love that you explained your reasoning
very nice video dude! very detailed information ! keep it going!
Great video
Thanks
I want a stem like that! My cheap aliexpress one looks so bad after this one. U arent going to have problems with climbing i changed a 100mm stem to a 35mm stem and i had absolutely no problem. But its sooo good to wheelie with it! Have fun!😉
I felt like I had to mention the possibility of the wheel pulling up on steep climbs in low gears just in case. Hoping I don't see the problems. I thought my 80mm was long, but 100... wow. The quality on this PNW Range stem is super nice. You can't go wrong.
Hey I just wanna say great video. Thank you for making it. I just got a 2022 Trek Marlin 6 because I haven’t bought a bike in over a decade and it was well received for a trail and pavement fitness bike. I’m loving it so far and the 1x10 drivetrain is great on it for me who wants simplicity. I just got the KW range bar and I 100% agree with what you’ve said regarding your position and wrists. My Medium frame came with 70mm stem and right now the 70mm with the range KW is great. I am curious if I want an even shorter stem but for basic trails (no DH) I think the 70mm stem balances things nicely. I realized from your video my bontrager handlebars are on backwards! The screw was hitting my finger as it was rear facing. Going to fix that now!! Anyway I like how you covered why you’re getting parts and what your stock stuff was it gave me a great point of comparison as a marlin owner as well. Enjoy the bike everyone says modern hard tails are amazing compared to even FS of 5+ years ago. Look forward to watching more content.
Thank you! Hope you are enjoying the new KW range bar. I'll have a new video coming this week, and then plan on doing a follow up on how I am liking all the upgrades. Thanks for watching!
Very nice! I just did a similar bar change, waiting for it to be shipped, I have a Funn 785mm/30mm rise/31.8 but I'm gonna use the stock bontrega stem. I've been finding my lower back is starting to hurt so I'm hoping the slightly rise helps that. Your video has been informative in helping me do the swap :) minus the part u forgot to record haha
Cool, let me know how you like the new bars!
I did the same thing. It has made my bike much more comfortable. You get less weight in the front during climbs over roots but i think i just need to get used to it so i can change my body position on climbs.
I just installed the same color as yours on my 1999 Specialized FSR Sport but, I ordered the Gen 3. I didn't see the KW's listed. I love these bars! I installed them with a 30 degree rise stem X 50 mm long. My wrists don't hurt anymore and I don't feel like I am too far forward over the front wheel now.
new bars have been worth every penny and really not that expensive of an upgrade.
Really nice video. I just picked up the '22 Marlin 7 and was looking to upgrade my handle bar to a raised one. I already have the PNW loam XL grips and they are amazing. How are you liking the handle bar? I really like PNW and am leaning toward their Range handle bar (as well as dropper down the road). I don't think i will be changing the stem as i am 6.2 with the large frame and the reach already feels really good, so a shorter stem will probably have me to squished back.
Minus the stem, these are the upgrades i just did on my Fuel Ex 5. I'm a big fan of the range 3!
I’ve been extremely happy these upgrades. I need to get an update video out
Love seeing your marlin and local nj trail content. I’m 5’11 with a large M6 I feel at times it feels a little big on longer rides. Do you think these updates would help me getting more comfortable?
It all depends on the type of riding you want to do. If it feels a little bug as in you feel stretched out and leaning too far forward, than this is a possible option for you. I’ll be releasing a 1 year update on this setup in the next day or two.
Great video! It's good to see Marlin 7 content. Helps makes upgrades easier. I'm in a dilemma. On my 21 Marlin 7 M, I already have PNW Cascade dp, loam lever, Range 3 hb. Wondering if I should go for the 50mm (no 40mm in stock) Range Stem 5 or the Renthal Apex 40mm from ebay. I'm 5.7" and the stock Bontrager stem feels like a stretch for me. With my Maxxis Rekon Races, my bike is faster. I currently ride XC but looking for more trail riding.
Which stem would you recommend? PNW 50mm to complete my PNW upgrades, or Renthal 40mm for weight savings, and shorter stem? Looking forward to your reply.
I went with the PNW as an easy choice since I have had a really good experience with their company and products. However, i have heard good things about the renthal also. I don't think you can go wrong either way and its really just more of a personal preference, or really trying to take weight off. The maxxis tire upgrades are also great, right?
@@DadTechTV Thank you. Since they only had 50mm PNW Range Stem, I decided to give it a shot. It turns out Renthal has some trouble with the bolts that come with that stem. So, I decided PNW was better. You're right, they make good quality products!
The Maxxis Rekon Race is so much better than that stock XR2 COMP. Although a bit noisier, they are more compliant and faster rolling. Best part = more grip. I'm looking forward to a Rekon or Ardent in front for XC
Glad I stumbled onto this video. I ordered the exact same parts for my 2023 marlin 7. Question on the stem install. I notice my fork has a little play after installing the bar and stem. Did you encounter this. If so, what did you do to tighten it up? Friends have said tighten the headset but it’s very snug and I don’t want to over torque
I haven’t had any issue with play in my setup.
@@DadTechTV I ended up figuring out. I had to mess with different headset spacers for it to be snug.
First of all, nice video! Did it help ur comfort? I have the sam exact problems u mentioned with the Grand Canyon 8. Im thinking on buying just the handlebar at the moment. I have 60mm stem so im not planing yet on buying a new, couse of financial situation. Does it feel better. I love going up but my position on downhill and comuting is uncomfortable. At the moment a also have a handlebar similar to your old one.
For me and the way i ride/want to ride, all the changes have been a huge improvement. And while i thought i may end up pulling the front wheel up more on uphills, I actually pull it off the ground less because of a more comfortable position. I'm going to do some updates on all the different changes i have made.
Can I use the stock stem with my marlin 7 and these PNW handlebars? Cool video btw! Very helpful.
Yes you can use the stock stem. The newest version of the bars (gen3) come in two diameters. Make sure to order the 31.8 if you want to use the stock stem!
Do you think that this cockpit would benefit someone who rides a Marlin but more for XC? I typically ride 20-30 miles on gravel with my 2019 Marlin 7 and the vibrations leave me with a sore back and numb hands. I'm also 5'10" and ride a large size so the bike is also slightly too big for me FWIW.
if you haven't already, look for some nice soft grips to help with the numb hands. i love the pnw's but i don't find them to softer than the stock grips. this cockpit sits me more upright with my arms less extended. it gives me better control and stability, but a longer stretch is better for speed. If you feel real stretched out and if you think that is causing issues with your back, it could help to shorten that stretch.
If you wanted your bars higher is there a reason you didn’t move those top spacers to below the bars?
That could work for some also. I was looking for a different feel from the bars that come with it.
Just put the range 40 mm stem and bars and grips what a difference on the trek Marlin 5 I'm 53 huge difference thanks for the video
I'm getting ready to put an update together on these parts. I agree, huge difference in a very positive way.
What is the difference between the KW and Gen 3? I just got a Gen 3 and didn't even see the KW version on the PNW website.
From the comparison I did, the Gen 3 is 800mm vs the KW's 780mm. The Gen 3 also added the option of a 35mm bar diameter. The Gen 3 is the newest version and the one available at this time. I got the KW right as the Gen 3 was being released and its why I have the Range Stem Gen 3.
Did you get your bike from Marty’s bike shop because I got the same bike there
I did. Great shop!
@@DadTechTV I am upgrading my bike slowly but certainly I love my bike I am turning 12 in October and I asked for the same stem , tires, bars, grips bc they look sick! I love your videos and bike and I love riding the mine hill trails
How do you determine your bar positioning ?
For me, it's all just comfort for how I ride.
I just orderd som PNW Loam grips and thinking bout a bar...how can you not like this company?
I've loved everything I've gotten from PNW.
