- മധ്യകാല കേരളത്തിൽ പന്ത്രണ്ടു വർഷത്തിലൊരിക്കൽ നടന്നിരുന്ന നദീതട ഉത്സവമായിരുന്ന മാമാങ്കം എന്ന മഹാമേളയെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് ഇതിൽ പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നത്. കാടഞ്ചേരി നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ 'മാമാങ്കം കിളിപ്പാട്ട്', സാമൂതിരി കോവിലകത്തെ ചില ഗ്രന്ഥവരികൾ എന്നിവയാണ് മാമാങ്കത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു ഇന്ന് ലഭ്യമായിട്ടുള്ള പ്രധാന രേഖകൾ. ഇതിൽ സാമൂതിരി കോവിലകത്തെ ഗ്രന്ഥവരികൾ കണ്ടെടുക്കുകയൂം പഠനം നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തത് പട്ടാമ്പി എസ്.എൻ.ജി.എസ് കോളേജിലെ പ്രൊഫസറും ചരിത്രകാരനുമായിരുന്ന ഡോ. എൻ.എം നമ്പൂതിരിയായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പൂർണ പിന്തുണയോടെയാണ് ഈ ഡോക്യുമെന്ററി ചെയ്യാൻ സാധിച്ചത്.

In tamil mamangam means 12 years.........................since this event happens every 12 years it has got the name as mamangam.........
.. Ancient Indians said, there are 12 adityas which in real terms point to the 12 cycles of the sun.
.. It takes 12 years for jupiter to make a revolution around the sun. In fact in malayalam, 12 years is called "vyazha vattam", which literally means jupiter round. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system, in fact scientists say it was supposed to be a twin star to sun, but ended up as a failed star or gas planet. Indians gave disproportionately huge importance to jupiter than other planet.
.. Temples are renovated and re-consecrated every 12 years. In south India, this is called kalashabhishekam, kumbhabhishekam.. etc. Kalash is the crowning structure on top of the temple roof made from brass etc. Kalash also means pot, and it is actually that, holding seeds of various grains and pulses. (9 types, called navadhanyam). This is insurance against destruction of seeds in case of flood, etc in the village. Seeds lose their potency in 12 years, so seeds in kalasham are replaced every 12 years at this opportunity of renovation.
.. They also divided human life span into multiples of 12, (or rather they followed the natural 12 years cycles in their life events). A child is not schooled formally for the first 12 years, it is let to grow mentally and physically naturally. At 12 years of age he is given brahma vidya first and then science education, so the knowledge is not misused. He studies for 12 years upto 24 as brahmachari. At 24, he marries, and raises children and lives the life of a householder for another 24 years till he is 48. Then he is ready for vanaprastham, retired life, when he leaves home and goes to forest, ashram, lonely places, to contemplate on his experiences, learnings, etc. This he does for another 12 years till he is 60 (sashtiabdipoorti). Then he comes back and renews his marriage vows to his wife in THEIR "second marriage". After this, he enters into samnyasam / Sanyas.

Yes, what you say is probably correct. However, there is an ancient folklore that the perumal converted and moved to mecca. There is another folklore, he tried to convert his people to islam, but the fuedal lords killed him. Who knows what happened. The so-called "perumal palli" was most likely built by an arab trader. They built several palliis in kerala, even in those days. Vavar, who is connected to Sabarimala, is one such example.

Similarly the story of cheraman Perumal is also a manufactured one ... The historical Perumal is told about in texts such as the tamil text periya puranam and he was also said to be a companion of sundara murti one of the 63 nayanmars .. who was a historical figure and who has written history ... so according to that legend the cheraman Perumal did disappear but .. he went to kailash ... So this disappearance story of his has been taken advantage of and has been twisted to get people to convert to islam .. that is the most natural conclusion that can be arrived at ... Considering the track record of Islam as a religion that considers other people who don't belong to the faith as kafirs and islams behaviour to proselytise ... This is logical .. on the other hand when you consider cheraman perumals track record of him being described as a Shiva bhakt and a companion of the nayanmars who basically were the torch bearers of the bhakti movement and shaivite tradition in tamil nadu it seems extremely unlikely that he converted to islam ... on the history that we know ... the statement of the Perumal converting to islam is a manufactured one .. and that folk Lore further going to claim that he even asked his people to convert to islam seems really dubious and further cements the fact that this story is a manufactured one ... and this can only be viewed as a sly tactic by Islamists to get people to convert.
Dear Sir, If the Kerala king or 'Cheraman' had traveled to Mecca, the abode of Allah or ascended to Kailasa, the abode of Shiva as per traditional religious folklore's or myths are history then why are the Tamil and Kannada invaders of the 12th century C.E referring to the Hindu kings of Mahodayapuram and Kollam in Kerala as 'Cheraman' in their inscriptions ? The term 'Palli' in Sanskrit means 'a settlement, a village or a house' as it is in Malayalam language and almost all the south indian Dravidian languages and north indian Prakrit languages of antiquity but the term 'Palli' now has become exclusively associated with the Jains, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians in India as they referred to their Monastery, Mosque and Church as 'Palli' also in History.
