Chris Harris on... Lamborghini Urus vs Audi RS6: The Ultimate Family Car? | Top Gear

- In the latest series of Top Gear, Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness had a dilemma to solve - what is the absolute best way to transport a family? Is it the Lamborghini Urus with all its badge appeal. Or is it Audi's arguably subtler, yet equally thunderous RS6? Well here's Chris Harris chatting to Top Gear magazine's Jack Rix about why he'd choose the RS6 for the school run.

Chris is literally the only petrolhead that makes sense regarding SUVs. It's a pointless group of vehicles.
SUV = I want to look down on others and drive a expensive but sh*t car that looks like a van.
Yeah mate, true car enthusiasts will know SUVs are just ' UNNECESSARY'.
Yes. Sedans and Wagons look better, are more practical and have a lower center of gravity, thus making it more reasonable for it to have a performance variant. Sportscars are of course better performance vehicles, just as unpractical but at least they're a joy to drive. In my humble opinion, hot hatches and power-wagons are the true and best all rounders.
I would argue that the Urus is a big exception to this though, since in it the typical outrageousness of the Lamborghini brand perfectly aligns with the general preposterousness of the SUV segment. It’s not a coincidence that one the main forerunners of modern day SUVs, the LM002, was produced by Lamborghini.
Agree however try to find a wagon for anything that's not a luxury brand ,impossible .So if you want some sort of affordable everyday practicality you are forced to swallow the bitter pill that is an SUV.
I love Harris' advice to get a used last gen RS6, get it chipped and save about £60-65K.
Practical, sensible, still bloody fast and more affordable....

It might also be our age. First introduction to a "powerful" car is when your dad gets the new 2.0 Litre mondeo estate... not a mum doing the school run in an SUV. Also for me I still love the look of the Volvo estate touring cars.
I want to like Volvo but I never liked how they drove (flexing chassis, numb steering). And the new ones feel dull and uninspiring. At least the older ones had characterful 5 cylinder engines.
@@stephanvelines7006 don't forget that modern volvos are not as reliable as some might think, they're average at best.
@@stephanvelines7006 What? Flexing chassis? Which ones? My experience with volvo's is mostly from 2000 onwards, so I think you don't mean those ones?
@@Oockeshoek I drove a P80 C70 2.4 20V Convertible for a few weeks through Italy, nice looking car (blue metallic, black leather interior with BBS wheels, future classic?) very comfortable ride but a lot of chassis flex.
Then I drove a V70R P2 in black with a 5 speed auto, and again very nice engine, lots of character but I felt like the chassis was at its limit.
Then I had a P3 XC70 D5 AWD with the 2.5 turbo diesel and a tune ~ 245HP. Very good daily driver, loved the engine. I think that really was a good car all in all.
Yeah but someone who loves fast SUVs because that's what their parents drove is like people who argue that old muscle cars are better than modern stuff; maybe they look better and have more presence but they're not better to drive or live with. The estate (or hatchback) is still the best way to get a car that can carry a lot of stuff and still handles well. well. When Chris suggests this, is he talking about the C7 (2013-2018) RS6, or is there a version in between this 2020 version and the C7 that he's referencing?
@@seannmoriarty2974 I'm sure he's referring to the C7 model. Some people have remapped them to around 700bhp easily.
Hes speaking to the everyday guy... If you can afford it, the new C8 is sublime... and the only reason its quieter etc is due to OPF constraints... The new FL M5 also now has no crackles and pops anymore... Thing is, the C8 has new turbos, and once you remove the OPF and go full bolt on, itll be any easy 850-900bhp wihtout turbo changes... Ive got 800bhp with a stage 1
The new C8 isn’t fast either. I don’t think u need tuning to be honest

@@pseudonym6642 M5 cheap and nasty compared to fingerprint-magnet screens and plastic looking black trim ? Yeah right.
The new large BMWs have amazing quality interiors, especially specced with the premium leather. You can't even have carbon anymore in the RS6.
It's also not on the same level dynamically and technologically as the M5 and E63. If you buy it just to drive around you should go one level up an get an S8 instead.
@@nikolal.4502 Mate, don't be a fan boy... fan boys are losers who don't have the cash to buy what they want and make objective decisions... The reality is, every dog has its day...and having owned both... whilst the M5 comp is marginally faster in the top end... its actually less torquey and feels slower, most of the time... its also got torque limiters in 1st gear... But the real reason people buy these cars - is their consummate grand touring ability... Ive owned 2 M5s prior to this... the E60 was an amazing car, sans the gearbox... and the M5 comp is a wonderfully engaging car, but is riddled by the old centre console, sub par build quality... just opening and closing the doors by contrast is a joke... its all cheap hard plastic... by contrast, I bought my wife an X5m, and that has a wonderful new dash and interior... As for no carbon in the RS6... thats funny, because my car has a real carbon trim... the tech is infinitely better too... hence the inclusion of a hybrid battery to power all this new found tech. Re the E63... its very engaging, but the FL looks pretty effeminate, it is way too hard, and chintzy as hell... its also no good at being a Grand Tourer....because you'd have piles if you endeavored to do a transcontinental drive in one. What you don't understand about the RS6 - and why Chris Harris is entirely right in asserting RS6 types dont even bother looking at anything else, is because the RS6 is the best all round package... it does everything well, while the others do a couple of things very well.
Tow bar on an RS? I’m surprised - for years Audi refused to offer one.
They finally realized families use them
The RS6 has had the tow bar option for years, I had it on my C7. In order to fit it with a towbar you also need to fit it with the air suspension, though.
@@vetlea1087 I’ve been out of the game for too long it seems! Always remember that was a point of frustration not being able to order one
Audi is not Audi anymore...
It's the same with AMG. In the current C and E AMG models you can get tow hooks from the factory. (No chance with the previous models)
Merc fan here, E63s as the total utopic daily driver, but I get what Chris said. No matter what AMG may try, when it comes to sales and popularity, the RS6 just kicks the Merc out of the park. Especially when it looks *THAT GOOD*
Well the E63s is not ugly, especially the one from last year. But I can definitely understand that the RS6 is more flashy, something most people like. It's just that Audi is FAMOUS for their power wagons, let it be the RS3, RS4 (my favorite wagon actually) or the RS6. I honestly think somewhere in the future we might get an RS8 Avant. When the SUV frenzy is over of course.
i think chris has or used to have an e63 wagon so he's definitely a fan of it haha
I think this RS6 just looks way too much like a boy racer, hey look at me kinda. Rather put the family into the E63. Looks more subtle and sounds better. But yeah, matter of opinion I suppose :)
I think the last gen RS6 looked better personally. But the argument about which car makes you looks less of a nob is a moot point really. You may look less of a nob in the rs6 but a nob non the less.
@@chappy2121 For me it's probably the V10 one, that one was something special. Looked like a little beefed upp A6 TDI but with a million horsepower if you wanted!

Paddy was surprised at Chris Harris praising the Countach's handling. The truth is that the Countach is a very fun car to drive. It isn't practical, but as backroad carver it is great fun. I think the Countach is misunderstood as a "all looks no bite" car, but that isn't fair to it.
I agree with Chris, estates and sedans are just nicer cars to drive. But from where I come from, the roads are absolutely terrible. Its just easier on the heart and the wallet to have a car with a higher clearance and that's why they make sense. I would never buy a 330i and have it scrape its underbelly just so I can have more fun around the twisties. I'd have an X1 and live carefree having a little less fun.
Just buy an A4 Allroad? Or the VW equivalent of it
I am sorry to say this but an X1 is not a little less fun. It is nothing like a 3 series, let alone a 340i. The ground clearance argument is a good one though. I am just not sure an X1 is the answer to it.
@@DefinitelyNotEmma Yup, that's the one. Versatility of an SUV plus the practicality of an estate.

Chris harris dropping dimes... Keeping it real as always :)
Lol, such an on point discussion
The only clear advantage of the suv is ground clearance that’s why I bought an suv, because I often go down the country roads (not off road) to get to nice places to enjoy nature. I also need a trailer hitch. In the case of urus it has 250mm ground clearance.
I went for an bmw x4 20i (184hp) which is slightly cheaper that a 5 series touring, but to me it was more convenient because it’s a bit shorter so easier to find parking and has the ground clearance.
In the case of the urus, it’s longer so it only has the ground clearance advantage.
You could buy something like the rs/a6 avant and get it with the higher ground clearance or mount an air ride suspension kit but that would cost extra money
Unlike bmw, audi has a solution for the suv, it’s the all road avant versions
Clearance and Pirelli Zero Corsa? Not bloody like-ly

Chris is spot on in the intro about super fast SUVs... "you're trying too hard; I think they present an ugly face of motoring...what is that saying about you as a human being?" I don't like fast SUV people, they're showing off, self-centered jerks...fast wagon folks, though, care more about function, performance, and experience than what others see.
The rise in the adoption of the SUV is strongly correlated with the degradation of society, the reduction in people feeling safe, and the increase of people feeling afraid and like they have to be self-sufficient. SUV sales is a symptom of our world getting worse. I refuse to buy in.
the SUV is slower as well, Urus 1/4 mile is 11.4 seconds at 120 mph, E63 wagon does 1/4 mile is 11.2 seconds at 126 Mph, E63 wagon 0-60 is 3.0 seconds, Urus 0-60 is 3.6 seconds
Good point with the Swiss banker, I am one but too poor for a RS6 but you see them a lot in the garage downstairs as it is the best thing to go from Zurich to the Alps. 75% of the RS4 B6 worldwide were sold around Zurich.
