  • In the latest series of Top Gear, Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness had a dilemma to solve - what is the absolute best way to transport a family? Is it the Lamborghini Urus with all its badge appeal. Or is it Audi's arguably subtler, yet equally thunderous RS6? Well here's Chris Harris chatting to Top Gear magazine's Jack Rix about why he'd choose the RS6 for the school run.

      Yes. Sedans and Wagons look better, are more practical and have a lower center of gravity, thus making it more reasonable for it to have a performance variant. Sportscars are of course better performance vehicles, just as unpractical but at least they're a joy to drive. In my humble opinion, hot hatches and power-wagons are the true and best all rounders.

The reality is, every dog has its day...and having owned both... whilst the M5 comp is marginally faster in the top end... its actually less torquey and feels slower, most of the time... its also got torque limiters in 1st gear... But the real reason people buy these cars - is their consummate grand touring ability... Ive owned 2 M5s prior to this... the E60 was an amazing car, sans the gearbox... and the M5 comp is a wonderfully engaging car, but is riddled by the old centre console, sub par build quality... just opening and closing the doors by contrast is a joke... its all cheap hard plastic... by contrast, I bought my wife an X5m, and that has a wonderful new dash and interior... As for no carbon in the RS6... thats funny, because my car has a real carbon trim... the tech is infinitely better too... hence the inclusion of a hybrid battery to power all this new found tech. Re the E63... its very engaging, but the FL looks pretty effeminate, it is way too hard, and chintzy as hell... its also no good at being a Grand Tourer....because you'd have piles if you endeavored to do a transcontinental drive in one. What you don't understand about the RS6 - and why Chris Harris is entirely right in asserting RS6 types dont even bother looking at anything else, is because the RS6 is the best all round package... it does everything well, while the others do a couple of things very well.

    Paddy was surprised at Chris Harris praising the Countach's handling. The truth is that the Countach is a very fun car to drive. It isn't practical, but as backroad carver it is great fun. I think the Countach is misunderstood as a "all looks no bite" car, but that isn't fair to it.

  • @doctorsoncars1393
    @doctorsoncars1393 Před 3 lety +6

    I agree with Chris, estates and sedans are just nicer cars to drive. But from where I come from, the roads are absolutely terrible. Its just easier on the heart and the wallet to have a car with a higher clearance and that's why they make sense. I would never buy a 330i and have it scrape its underbelly just so I can have more fun around the twisties. I'd have an X1 and live carefree having a little less fun.

      I am sorry to say this but an X1 is not a little less fun. It is nothing like a 3 series, let alone a 340i. The ground clearance argument is a good one though. I am just not sure an X1 is the answer to it.

    The only clear advantage of the suv is ground clearance that’s why I bought an suv, because I often go down the country roads (not off road) to get to nice places to enjoy nature. I also need a trailer hitch. In the case of urus it has 250mm ground clearance.
    I went for an bmw x4 20i (184hp) which is slightly cheaper that a 5 series touring, but to me it was more convenient because it’s a bit shorter so easier to find parking and has the ground clearance.
    In the case of the urus, it’s longer so it only has the ground clearance advantage.
    You could buy something like the rs/a6 avant and get it with the higher ground clearance or mount an air ride suspension kit but that would cost extra money
    Unlike bmw, audi has a solution for the suv, it’s the all road avant versions

    Chris is spot on in the intro about super fast SUVs... "you're trying too hard; I think they present an ugly face of motoring...what is that saying about you as a human being?" I don't like fast SUV people, they're showing off, self-centered jerks...fast wagon folks, though, care more about function, performance, and experience than what others see.
    The rise in the adoption of the SUV is strongly correlated with the degradation of society, the reduction in people feeling safe, and the increase of people feeling afraid and like they have to be self-sufficient. SUV sales is a symptom of our world getting worse. I refuse to buy in.
