The album (tape) by General Public, "All the Rage," probably saved my life in the early 80's. I was in a very dark and lonely place, searching for something, and the upbeat vibes of this album kept me going. Here I am, 30 years later, and going strong. This band had as much to do with that as anything!
Met Roger one night back stage at the Ritz in NYC, around 1981. I asked him where his accent was from. He said, "Birmingham". I said, "Alabama?" I was drunk and being sincere. We both LAUGHED OUR ASSES OFF! Nice guy. This is my favorite GP tune. Rest in peace, Roger.
I saw General Public "Live" at UCLA University on a beautiful sun shiny day in 1985! I took some cool pics of the band. It now seems like a wonderful dream. What a cool band!
He was coming to san Francisco about a year ago with his son.. My brother bought tickets but then he told me RR was sick. I didnt realize how sick he was. My whole family grew up on English Beat and General Public. I'm so bummed I never got to see RR live.
I was in college in San Francisco, living in an apartment overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. This song takes me to that time, looking out a bay window, with my girl under my arm, staring as the afternoon fog enveloped the Bridge, and the rest frantically rolling over the Marin Highlands. Once you see that, you never forget it, never forget this song, and the girl who loved me sharing something that I hope she remembers. 1987, 21, in love, in the cool, grey city. Thank u EB for the memory.
This was incredible band. I loved the all English band madness English beat dexy midnight riders etc etc. One favorite albums of all time. Iam 60 now and I have listen to this today 15 times
Met Rankin Roger in Dallas. He was in the crowd sitting with his father having a beer. I walked up and he says hey! Sit! So, I sat, had a beer with he and his dad. He signed my album. Then he looks at me and says, “Well, it’s time.” And gets up and walks away. ❤
Brings me right back to my days at UC Santa Barbara. Saw General Public at the Arlington Theater in the fall of 1984 with my buddy Scott P. I miss those days. Life was very simple. No phones, no social media, no youtube...but a lot of great music.
New Wave 80s will be around forever, it's the best, was just in a popular nite club and they were having 80s nite ! Was super fun to see the videos and hear the music, what a blast!
Lived through every second of the 1980s, remember it so fondly. Even then I knew we were living in a good time, a special time, and what great memories!
Gotta love Rankin - enthusiasm and a mile-wide smile. Sad he’s gone but his music is here to stay. The Beat and General Public: 2 fantastic bands. Dave Wakelin, I salute you. ❤️
Dave still puts on a great show. I have seen him a few times at smallish venues. A winery in Temecula, California has a Summer under the stars concert with dinner and The English Beat! My wife, had never really heard them and now absolutely LOVES them after seeing them live. Dancing 15 foot from The English Beat playing live and dancing with a little buzz under the stars on a warm summer night..... hard to beat!
Qué afortunado fuiste!!! Yo en ese año tenía 11 años y hasta donde recuerdo nunca visitaron la ciudad de México. De cualquier manera a esa edad hubiese estado complicado ir a un concierto 😪
richard lew Great song!! I grew up in Arcadia and am a new wave and music freak but never went to one concert until my 40’s. I guess I didn’t realize concerts existed. Would kill to have seen the cars and others.
I was living in Sunnyvale at the time this song came out, just a year younger than you. Great memories of me and my girlfriend heading over the summit to Santa Cruz or to Half Moon Bay with the top down listening to Live 105. Those were the days.
The New Wave era of the eighties is the best music decade I think, second only to that of the sixties, when Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Who's ruled the airwaves.
Yes Decuardo totally with you, I am of the generation of the 90s, but the 80s and 60s in those years was the best music, until now .... apart point I must say that the English are a good Musica Phenomena for greetings from Lima
My kids are six and three years old, and they know the lyrics to this song, this is the type of music they listen to, not rubbish like 1D and the rest. This song is legend, the video as well.
Even back in the wonderfully creative 80's, The Beat was a brave and fearless band. Their music was easy to accept but it wasn't typical enough for the trendy, narrow minded fakers
The Crown and the song/video Stand Down Margaret made me put two and two together and I found out that the two lead members of the English Beat are also General Public. I used to love this song and Tenderness. A few years back that's when I found out that Rankin Roger passed away. GP was an amazing band that didn't make it far enough stateside like Duran Duran, TFF, or Culture Club. I'm happy that I got to hear a couple of their song growing up in the 80's.
I always liked the idea of this video, a compressed story line of how a song is presented, then practiced, and finally recorded, even if it doesn't happen so quickly and easily in real life. The band listening to a playback is a great touch. And the song is one of my all-time favourites.
Dave Wakeling - Ranking Roger the transition from the English Beat to General Public...more then Awesome.. taking the up beat Ska sound to a different level...an example of how 80's Alternative just got better and better...listened then still listen now...😎
Oh my gosh! I've been looking for this song for a long time. I didn't recall that it was from GP, the great offshoot from the English Beat. I had originally thought it was a piece by Janet Jackson. What a treat. What a great voice! This music will live on forever.
Damned cool!! And yes . . . Dave Wakeling is still performing . . . and when he is billed as The Beat . . . it is AWESOME!!!! His voice has not diminished in the least! I see The Beat every chance I get!
Finally... I've been looking for this song for 3 years. Originally heard it in the car on the way back from a road trip in mid-2018 and just found the title of it yesterday. Underrated track!

Seeing this video reminds me how much Broadway Lafayette in NYC has changed since this video was made plus staying up watching U68 for this video to come on and to tape the video (also NY Hot Tracks, Friday Night Video didn't have cable then) another cool trivia the building they use to film this is also the exterior shot for Will & Grace
