  • More and more seniors living on social security are having to face the hard reality that they will not be able to afford to live in traditional housing. Many are choosing to live as nomads in rvs, vans, campers, and even cars boondocking or camping in low cost campgrounds. Such was the case with Daryl, a 72 year old solo female who saw the handwriting on the wall and decided to take control of her destiny rather than leave her future in someone else's hands.
PLEASE NOTE: In the video introduction I indicated that Daryl decided to.move before being evicted. What was meant by that statement was before high rents forced her out. Daryl was not in the process of being legally evicted for those who may think that when seeing the video.
For many watching this video you may be facing the same situation Darryl found herself in. I hope this video offers you some information that will be helpful as you make whatever difficult choices you are facing and lets you know that you are not alone. Daryl told me that one of the reasons she agreed to do this video with me is that she wanted to encourage others who are facing losing the roof over their head and let them know that it is.possoble to be on the road and boondock like she is doing.
If you enjoy seeing these videos please hit that LIKE button to help me continue and let me know in the comments what you think about the choice Daryl made and if you may face a similiar situation.

Sounds familiar! I turn 70 next week, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford rent once my daughter graduated high school. Financially, I’d be no better off in subsidized sr housing than I am on the road. So, I’ve been mostly boondocking / staying in free BLM or NFS campgrounds since July, and love it! My Odyssey minivan works well enough for my pup and I, but I do have a bucket potty and intermittent refrigeration. May the road rise to meet you!

@@infiniteinfinity9802 I am not criticizing that woman. I am condemning to eternal shame the sick American culture where its most vulnerable seniors are gathering in car camps for moral and material support, living in their metal and plastic vehicles with no amenities to make them comfortable and keep them healthy because corporate greedsters have priced them out of existence in their communities. “Happiness” is relative to the misery of seeing tax and insurance and rent bills appearing in your mailbox knowing you can’t pay them. Running away in an old car with a foam bed, blankets and plastic storage containers to a homeless status will be her last freedom. Is this the country you want to live in? The one where old people are starved out of their homes and are putting themselves on the cold or hot road rather than be safe in an indoors home they can depend on? That’s such a big American lie about what ‘freedom’ is. And I have no doubt she and some of the rest of them when put in front of the camera are cheered about it when you feature them as fierce and happy in their little beat up cars. Excuse me for my empathy. I fear that they will freeze to death or die of heat stroke because they’ve been led to believe in the ‘fierce and happy’ expectation they are modeling for other desperate seniors that the sick American society is spitting out in disgust. The irony is unbelievable. On one hand you cheer the newly homeless in their ‘car camp’ life and then you all do a 180 and cringe at the cities overwhelmed with car camps everywhere. Pathetic.

Fresh vegetables, fruits and breads will keep for many days, and coffee, tea, olive oil, ghee, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices and grains will keep indefinitely. Of course, there is always canned meats for non-vegetarians. It helps to have a source for ice close by, however, if you need it.

You have to apply for low income, income based, senior housing and get on the waiting lists (also apply for Sec 8 HUD housing voucher which brings the rent down lower and better housing inspections) and be patient and wait, and wait. The thing I don't like is all the government beaurocracy and then the dealing with the management companies that operated these housing sites.

It doesn't have to be a gloomy ending - my husband and I are luckier than most, and we are looking for an ambulance to convert into our retirement tiny home. Here's to outdoors, adventure, and being alive!

Carol, great interview and Daryl great story. I know there are a lot of people who can’t understand how someone can live in a van. I lived 14 years in a truck, yes working and driving the country to deliver and pick up loads. Still stayed in places that a lot of people didn’t like. I always moved if I didn’t feel safe. I will be 70 in April and miss being on the road. My husband and I are working on a mini bus now so we can travel. He will be 76 on the 30 of this month. We have only been married for the last 8 years. But have both always wanted to travel. Me not having someone tell me where to go or when to get there. Lol. Wishing you all safe travels out there and can’t wait to get out there and meet so many that I am now friends with.

I love this wonderful ladies attitude, however, I do feel a bit for concern that she gave up low income subsidized senior housing. Where I am at it can take years to get into this type of housing and if she were to lose mobility, she would be without a place to sleep. I get it though, I would rather live in my Mini Van if all I could afford was to pay rent and never do anything. So sad we have to make these choices. The idea that a person who has worked and contributed to society cannot even pay rent and do some car camping to travel is so sad.

It would be an idea for 4 seniors to go together and purchase one or two cheap rural area, non-zoned, acres and divide it in four sections and have a fire pit , circle sitting for socializing, a covered cooking area, a shed for work and garden supplies etc... Work together to bring in water, take out trash, etc... maybe have a little garden. I heard Traveling with the Gramkracker purchased 0ne or two acres in Arizona and has built a tool and supply shed, work shop shed, and is fixing it up a little. It's about 5 miles to go get water and supplies. Too hot to stay in the summertime but other seasons is fine. He has friends come and visit from time to time. Some other people are doing this too. I think he go a couple of acres for $5000 loan. The reason I haven't taken to living as a senior nomad is I'm uncomfortable with just the absolute feeling of isolation and not being with more experienced people. It's frightening. What I see from most all the nomad videos is that most people are "alone".

    Smart lady!
I researched and opted for a Matrix after my Exodus in 2012.
I wasn't necessarily looking for something that I could live in if I had to.
But I noticed that a lot of senior citizens had Matrixes so I was looking for something that was reliable, had enough room with my kids needed to stretch out on a road trip, something I could afford on my school clerk salary, something that I could transport lots of things around in but that would fit into my small area garage.
We had always gotten oversized, gas guzzlers. I had begun researching vehicles close to 6 months before I filed to leave.
After teaching two teens to drive and allowing my daughter to use it to commute to classes, it was totaled on the parkway. (Wrong way driver headon).
Then I got another hatchback, but living in it still wasn't on mind.
Then my son stop by on his way from Kansas down to Florida.
He is a medically retired mechanic from the Army so he knows cars.
When I saw his Subaru, I knew what my next (and last) car was going to be.

This may aggravate some folks, but our government should be helping people like the senior citizens, the veterans and the homeless instead of spending tax payer money to help the illegals. I would be extremely pissed off if my mom had to live out of her vehicle. I have nothing wrong with people living in their vehicles. I have been thinking very seriously about it myself as an adventure to see more United States sites. I am lucky and blessed to have my home and everything I own paid off. God bless the folks that are having to do this as a way of surviving.

Didn't aggrevate me. I agree. When folks live in their vehicles by choice that is a great thing. But many don't have a choice.

I’m a senior who will be living in a van by this time next year, but I’m not buying into the story that those who have even less than I, are the reason that so many seniors & veterans in the US are unable to afford housing. There’s always been an extravagant amount spent on military contracts. If they could funnel just 2% of that into affordable housing, we’d be way ahead of any other country as far as quality of life, & still maintain a kick ass military.

Dense people with zero comprehension of the real issues. The freakin wall is stupid. It is a deflect issue, so you pay no attention to real issues.
Your wannabe dictator gave the rich more tax breaks, raised taxes on the middle class, added 25% to the National Debt. A BIGGER INCREASE THAN ANY FOUR PRIOR PRESIDENTS COMBINED!!!
Your wannabe dictator made hate and cruelty acceptable.
Make the rich PAY TAX! That is a real solution that would help. Have the repugs pay back the money they syphoned from Social Security. SS would NOT be in the perilous state if reagan and crew hadn't thieved OUR MONEY!
Do some real research and stop yapping fox talking points like a brainless puppet. You are part of a large community called The World, so pay attention and learn. Ignorance serves no purpose. sheesh....

Daryl is really what I call a Shero. Not that she doesn't at times experience fear, but she continues on!
