"This dude has never slept on a couch, after getting kicked out of the house by his girlfriend." I didn't know this was a metric that drummers were measured by.
It is
I lolol'd.. literally..seriously.
@@maness2112 you get me
His girlfriend always gets him fresh bananas
This is why I'm not a great drummer earning my crust hitting shit. It was my couch people slept on in these circumstances. Damn. If only I'd known
He actually did go to Berklee!
Insane how you named that off the top of your head lmao
Well, I've got no idea about American music schools, but I can name Berklee.
He kinda read matt like a book lmao "this guys not metal, hes like an accountant" I died cuz its so true
Edit: and he said dave weckl im done. One of matts main idols
He also nailed the fact that Tommy Giles of between the buried and me is a Mike Patton fan. Buddy knows his shit hah
Yeah this guy is so insightful lol
From a drummer stand point he's the jack of all trades. Made me want to go home and practice.
He can blast pretty well too, though I dont listen to AAl for blasts.
3:41 Maybe he's had... physical education?
Hahahahaha
Ha
ohhh youuuu
"He's got a lot of Dave Weckl in his playing." Matt has said that one of his favourite drummers of all time is Weckl.
Saw him once live, it was so damn hot I wanted to puke, but this guy Matt, he didn't care. He just took it out on the drums. He flogged that set like I've never seen someone flog a set of drums before. I was supremely impressed even though I didn't know what the f was going on and despite being an Animals as Leaders fan from the beginning. It was so different, I'll never forget it as long as I live. It was just one of "those moments". Ya'll know what I'm talking about.
Matt Garstka - ectogenesis. This is the best druming ever.
@MorbidManMusic And #metoo
@MorbidManMusic Well, obviously noone is randomly spitting objective truths about purely subjective stuff.
Hilarious that you can pinpoint his Berklee background from this. I remember seeing a video from his Berklee days where he was playing Gospel and totally grooving it. This animal can play anything.
priser24 I concur
"looks like an accountant" LOL love it. You should react to any of may Matt Halpern's drum vids
Nic Petterson from Northlane
He's so fluid, and technical it's unfair. His style is unbeatable.
Elliot Hoffman, consider him beat
nah hes good at keeping the dramatic vibe and writing parts well suited to the music he plays. wouldnt say unbeatable or very technical.
In the metal world this would be considered “djent” and it is one of the hardest to write. Basically a lot of it is written independently because of all the insane time signatures and unorthodox tempo changes, we strive to make the hardest stuff work, not to simplify it to fit better. But with that, it’s basically a guitarist with his laptop and a click track coming up with a super complicated riff with an idea in mind of the weird timing and gets a solid song together and sends it over to their drummer to basically learn and come up with what will sound best with what he has come up with. It is very hard to write this stuff as a band in a room. It would take a year to write one song because everything is so specific and complicated that it has to start with one mind and build off that. If that makes any sense to the musicians out there.
Marco Minnemann with The Aristocrats!
culture clash solo from tokyo.
Matt is better
@@anthonyjones3835 nobody in this thread said Marco was better
His reaction was very astute. Matt actually went to Berklee and indeed played with his Dad in a more fusion band.
This band is over the top, and in the future, it will be the band we remember from this era. One could criticize, but why. One of the kind band.
Tbh Id say it shares that title with BTBAM
These guys are incredible live
Matt is both one of the best drummers I've seen live (he always complicates his parts live, even moreso than in the studio, leaving his bandmates looking impressed with that musician-approved stank face,) but is really laid back and nice as a person! Hit the nail on the head by calling him a "nice accountant"-type
‘Jesus christ’
Yeah, there’s no let up!
Saw my first AAL gig a few months back. Great live set, and a really appreciative audience.
It may sound strange but i've spent over 20 years playing professionally (mostly studio/session work) and i still go to drum teachers every 1-2 years just to get another professionals view on where i need to spend more time with practice. I look at it like having a personal trainer at the gym telling you to push your limits and keep you on the right track. Having a good drum teacher is never a waste of time or money unless you have given up on progress 👍
haven't watched the reaction yet but I love the intro and how you acknowledge the "blasphemy" of not knowing AAL. now I'm super excited to see the reaction because they're sort of know as the guitar/drum teachers favorite band hahaha. my guitar teacher is the one who introduced me and I've been addicted ever since!
"you have to be so good that it can't be denied"
Great quote, and so appropriate.
I literally lol’d when you said “So...no 4-playing.” 😂
I'm mad you were able to asses Matt so easily 😂😂😂. Spot on!!
Haha I try
It would be awesome if you check Mario Camarena CHON's drummer, one of my favorite math rock drummers I think you'll like it!
Would be cool! Love that Meinl Sleepy Tea vid of him. 😎🤙
Nathan*
@@DuffyLONER64 jajaja right Nathan, my mistake 🤦🏻♂️
@@zangetzu70 freaking right!!!! He kills it in that video!! 🔥🔥
Camarena is a baby drummer compared to Garstka
Awesome video! Love all your content. Your information is super great for me who is learning! Thanks again.
Ps. Love your shirt ;)
I think the best way to describe Animals as Leaders is "Alan Holdsworth meets Meshuggah".
Great live band. If you like Animals As Leaders you should check out their guitarist's other band T.R.A.M. Like this but uh.. jazzy..er? Also dig the shirt.
And check out mestis. It’s Javiers other band too! Cool Latin inspired stuff!
Yeah, and check out _Reflux,_ the band with whom Tosin Abasi got his first mainstream exposure to the metal community. It's like...progressive death core, VERY different from _Animals as Leaders,_ but you could tell, even back then (2004/05), that Abasi was the real deal (their bassist Evan Brewer was obviously insanely good as well - he later spent ~4 years with death metal band _The Faceless_ ). _Reflux_ only released one album (The Illusion of Democracy), but Devin Townsend was clearly a fan, inviting _Reflux_ to open for _Strapping Young Lad_ on the Alien tour (he's still a fan of Abasi... _Animals as Leaders_ toured with Devin 2 or 3 years ago), which is how I learned of _Reflux_ and Abasi (seeing SYL in Montreal in 2005). I was so impressed that I immediately bought their album (at the show), and still listen to it now and again. _Animals as Leaders_ is much more...proggy, but _Reflux_ is super-technical and badass. It's definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of Abasi's other bands, if for no other reason than to see where he was in his musical journey in 2004. It's also important to note that we wouldn't even HAVE _Animals as Leaders_ without _Reflux_ since Abasi was "discovered" by an A&R guy at one of those SYL shows...he convinced his bosses to sign Abasi for a solo album, and the rest is history (notably, _Animals as Leaders_ actually WAS a solo act initially...the drums were programmed by Misha Mansoor of _Periphery,_ but Abasi wrote everything, and recorded all the guitar and bass tracks by himself).
That drummer is dope . Super clean .
My man, I just liked subscribed and hit that bell. I just found this video randomly. I like your video man and I will watch more. You should react to Jason Richardson and Luke Holland playing hos down. An absolute masterpiece in guitar and drums. Luke the drummer is a genius.
Try animals as leaders - woven web
Then you’d probably witnessed magic 😂
Pronounced MAIN- EL. Thanks . Garstka has hands of concrete.
Meinl Cymbals has a great video on youtube of Matt Garstka playing a piece called "Kepler" with Josh de la Victoria. Also, you should really checkout a video of Tomas Haake of Meshuggah. There are some great drum cams of live shows if you want something live.
The sound when the Wizard of Oz gives Mangini a soul...
Jamie Saint-Mérat. Fusion drumming with an extreme metal backbone. This is the only hint I'm gonna give😂
You definitely have to react to Dan Presland of Ne Obliviscaris ;)
This drummer is not just out to get gigs, he's gone beyond that and is exploring the utmost reaches of his art. I am not a huge fan, but I have great admiration for this level of dedication. That said lots of people love heavy prog and enjoy this sort of music for it's own sake, so a decent audience is a given for someone at this level. In that light I find your comments a little patronising, you should just come out and say you don't like the music.
@Junkdrummer TV I hear ya, My brother introduced Me to this band. He also introduced Me to The Mars Volta years ago. I mean... there's so much content out there :-) Check Out: PROTEST THE HERO another band that can blow Your mind "Drumming" wise
this is definitely a heavier song of theirs. you should definitely check out the playthrough of their song Ectogenesis. These dudes are masters of their instrument. They have influences ranging from metal bands like Meshugga and Dream Theater to Players like Victor Wooten.
gotta check out Chris Turner the drummer for Oceans Ate Alaska, technical as hell, he's a machine
You oughta check out his rendition to get your freak on by missy elliot. Chops are unreal
Glad you did Matt! You had such a great reaction, it's pretty much mine everytime I see a video of him. I'd suggest his newer video of him playing Inner Assassins as it's their first album of actual recorded acoustic drums (no programming). Not that Matt can't replicate that but it just has a even more complex feel! Keep at it!
I don`t know if you knew his story when you did this video but he did went to Berkeley, he does like Chic Corea, he is a fusion afficionado and he did move to Nashville recently. He`s doesn`t play like this anymore, he`s much more refined these days.
You should see his video that compiled all the bands, projects, guest spots, and stuff he did for his school. Dude is all over the place playing a bunch of genres.
Definitely worth going to see live.
You should check out the vocalist, he is super talented.
Gotta do matt Halpern!! 🤩
Funny that you said you hear Weckl in his playing.....in an interview, he said Weckl was/is a huge influence of his. I think it was a Vic Firth live stream called "in the Studio with Matt Garstka".
pleeeeease do -> Thordendal & Ågren-Sol Niger Within-2001 one of the most insane drum perfomance in Metal I've ever witnessed
By some crazy coincidence AAL popped up on my Spotify Discover Weekly this morning! Not really my jam but definitely preferred his playing to Blake Richardson. Much more physical. Quite honestly a lot of these guys just remind me how great Danny Carey is. Ultra technical drumming with heart and soul is rare. Carey is that rare thing.
Blake Richardson #1, you take that back
"You can't go to Nashville and do this."
Right though?
Dude's so buff rn, you better check out his new look.
No foreplay, he's getting into it quick.
That's how we do it lol
Now check out one of their difficulty pieces.
Also @Junkdrummer TV Thanks for the MEINL Cymbals comment, I've been playing on them for over 10 years, You made Me feel cool, I guess I'm pretty "Hip" and "Ahead of the Game" LOL :-D They're good cymbals, I still use Sabian Cymbals as well, since I was a baby drummer... I can't give up on them
Matt Garstka was an instructor at Berkeley School of Music.
Casey Jaszewski no, he went to BERKLEE he never taught. Spell the name right too lol. He was a graduate of Berklee.
“He’s a nice guy” lol that’s funny. But yeah totally agree about the 1% for sure, that’s a nice wya to say it’s just a bunch of rhythmic rambling, but hell its tight.
@Junkdrummer TV heeeey man there buddy ole pal. Love what you do. Waaaaas just wondering if could react to
Steve Wilson - The Watchmaker (Live in Frankfurt)

Weightless the Sick Drummer version is God-tier drumming
Perfect video for me to continue my quest suggesting Baard Kolstad - Mirage playthrough! A fusion drummer for sure with a very interesting grip, literally!

im a guitar player, but I love watching drummers. I think I play guitar like a drummer lol if that makes sense. but I had to sub because you crack me up! one video you said something about naming blast beats and you called one the cherry blast from dairy queen lol I love your quick jokes man. and yes, every metal musician should have at least slept on a couch min. 5 times in their life lol
Thank you!
Would love to see you watch ectogenisis or woven web by animals as leaders as well!
You're accurate af lol
6:17 that was definitely a detroit become human reference
If you want to see MG at a young age playing fusion check out the "two man trio" videos on his channel!!!
What about Matt Halpern from Periphery? Would love to see your reaction to MAKE TOTAL DESTROY or Marigold
And after my recommendation on your Blake Richardson video, I see you have hit Matt Garstka! He's wild, idn't he?? Should you ever decide to revisit him, I would definitely recommend finding a good live video of them performing "Physical Education", because Matt has some nutty fun with that song live as opposed to on the record!
now check out chon
Peripherys drummer is sick and def jazz orientated. Check him out Matt Halpern - garden in the bones, 22 faces or marigold
look i know this sounds ridiculous but react to "cuntcrusher drum playthrough" by infant annihilator
The best guitarist in the world happens to be in this band, Tosin Abasi
I enjoyed this video
Brendan Morgan and andrew foreman are some of my favs
