WHAT a superb vaulter Shushunova was. That first vault was absolutely fantastic. Excellent form in the pre flight, great block with straight arms, stretched through the hips, knees and toes throughout, toes pointed, and of course the super landing. The height she got from the horse! Just from an old springboard and a horse vault! What superb technique.
Considering the yurchenko style vault had only just been pioneered a couple of years previously, Shushunova really was ahead of her time on this apparatus. The second vault, while the form in the post flight was not quite as good as her previous vault with the slight tuck down on the final half twist, to be competing a 1 1/2 straight in 1985 was unbelievable. The same vault would be used by the eventual AA champion in 2008, but here's Shushunova, comparable in 1985. Just fantastic.
What a joy to watch that. She was a true all around gymnast, no weak event to speak of. RIP Shushunova, one of the greatest, gone too soon.

classic late 20th century women's gymnastics! there was enough grace here to satisfy balletomanes.I do miss those gymnastics!

Les commentaires étaient d'une qualité exceptionnelle ! Par ailleurs, la Roumaine Daniela Silivas n'avait en effet que 13 ans à l'époque...

In my opinion the code they used in this quad is, to this day, the one that best understood what gymnastics is about at its essence. The best routines not only have a balance between difficulty, execution and artistry (what today's code looks for) but also risk, originality and creativity. A routine like Omelianchik's (on any of her events really.. take your pick) with 1 or 2 supremely difficult and risky elements, plus creativity in composition and artistry and virtuosity in performance is so much more interesting to watch than a routine stuffed from front to back with the most difficult elements in the code but no originality or creativity in composition.
Now that I'm on the topic, Omelianchik does not get enough credit for her innovation. Not only did she introduce the half-on style vaults only a few years after the introduction of the regular Yurchenko, she was the first to perform back-to-back tumbling passes on floor. One of the true greats.

What did the judges think giving 9.80 both to Silivas and Gnauck?? Judging during the 80s was horrible, scheming and calculating all the time...

At 12:27, Szabo is standing on the podium while Gnauck awaits the green light for her 2nd vault. It would seem to me that this would not be allowed considering how strict the FIG is about technicalities, especially procedural ones like standing on the podium when it isn't your turn. A similar incident resulted in a 0.50 penalty and cost the USA the team bronze in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

misina211 This is UEG competition not FIG so the rules may have been different. This was the first Euros the UEG organized si they may not have been so strict. Also the issue was USA was she also blocked judges. Szabo does not.
