That looks great and light, too. At a hospital dinner someone brought a bowl of devil's food cake, cherry pie filling, chocolate syrup, and whipping cream - you could add walnuts or pecans. I never ate so much in my whole life than when I worked at the hospital. Every department would set up for every holiday and you would just graze.
I have a tip for everyone who would like to add pecans, walnuts, blueberries, kiwi, chocolate, etc. Maybe buy a wheelbarrow to make it in. Looks delish, ima gonna try it as soon as I finish my diet.
I had this in the 80s it was called strawberry trifle. My supervisor made it for employee appreciation day. I love been in love with this since that time.
Mmp
I'm Canadian, and this is a classic British dessert called a trifle. It is sometimes made with a little splash of sherry or port in the cake layer. We like to throw in blueberries too. It's yummy.
That SOUNDS delightful… gonna try your recipe.
Gurl yes!!!! I have a friend that's a chef and she makes that superbly!!!!!
I’ve soaked blackberries in blackberry brandy and the pineapple I drain and soak in rum . . . And don’t use strawberries lol. Depending on how much of the rum I tasted I’ve been known to use angel food cake or devils food cake lol. I’m just to old to deal with alcohol anymore so this video is a good refresher lol
I always use Port AND Brandy! Why not? Also home made custard, and the jelly must be Raspberry. Dunno why...
Exactly!
Love listening to Thomas beg for bowls to lick and never fails he has to taste test the deserts if he is home 😂😂😂 so sweet.
We called it Trifle growing up. I make a version of it now using black cherry yogurt , angel food cake, frozen berries and fresh fruit. I cut the cake into layers and alternate ingredients. It tastes so decadent but it's really not.
It sounds yummy.
Yes, that is what it is called, in England. 🤗
That just sounds so good, mmm 😋😋😋
Black cherry yogurt, that sounds amazing!!!
This is my husband’s favorite dessert! Every year my Mom would make it for him for his birthday. She used cherry pie filling instead of strawberries. I’m going to have to make him one once he gets his taste back after having Covid. The great thing with this recipe is that you can use a smaller bowl and make half of it. Freeze one layer of your cake for another time and just use half of what the recipe calls for.
So true.
P
Great idea 💡💡💡
Sorry he had covid,Thank God he here,Prayers
In the UK we call this trifle, we either use dry Italian biscuits or sponge as the base, often soaked with Sherry, if young children aren’t eating it, then fresh fruit, next jelly though sometimes people leave this out, then custard ( home made is best using milk, egg yolks and vanilla) then whipped cream on top, then on top fruit or nuts or hundred and thousand sprinkles. My mother made the best trifles she made everything from scratch from fresh ingredients with loads of booze.
Mine too
Yes indeed! Only way to go!
Loads better!
If you don't fall down from the fumes from a triffle, it needs more alcohol... 🤣
I always use pound cake for these kind of dessert bowls. They can be made so many ways using different fruits.
Me too
Thank youuuu 👏👏👏
yes and I drain the pineapple
me too! making cake is time consuming
My mom made a bowl dessert like this one but called it cherries in the snow
Cherry pie filling, crushed pineapple, a white cake and a mixture of vanilla pudding with sour cream, then whipped cream of course.
Here in Australia it is called Trifle. It is a traditional desert. We normally use Rolly Polly cake and we sprinkle the cake with brandy or a liquore. We also use jelly and custard. I have to make it every Xmas. Lately I use Panetone.
Sharyn
That is the way my mum taught .e how to.mske a trifle with the jelly and custard
Adding some liquor sounds absolutely scrumptious
@@dorotheebehr9288 it's not a real trifle without the booze.
@@dorotheebehr9288 Hi Dorothee. Yes, the liquor is sprinkled onto the cake, or poured, ha ha. Then every thing else is added. Brandy is the Original but some liquors such as Frangelica really does wonders. I hope you get to make it. Very easy.
Great idea! I'm going to try it with Chocotone .
What a great summer time desert, could have some chopped pecans on the side for anyone who feels a little nutty.
This gave me an idea about other variations like for example chocolate or lemon cake mix.
Pecans or crispy crunch chocolate bar or even both. I would also use fresh strawberries throughout. I made a truffle with angel food cake, lemon pudding, raspberries and I kiwi. And whip cream.
Could have added chopped pecans on top also
😉
Would also like pecans or walnuts on it.

This is traditionally called a Trifle. Intended to use stale cake, the cake is placed at the base of the bowl and sprinkled with sherry or your preference of liquor.
There is never any stale cake at my house 😂 .
Correct! I was heading to the comments section. One thing though, the white layer, whatever you use for it, doesn't go in the layers and goes on top only.
Exactly how I remembered it made in England 🇬🇧💜
Yup!
@@rabbit3212010 Whipped Chantilly cream on the very top. Home made custard directly below. Sponge cake below the custard and also on the bottom of the bowl.. Fruit salad in between the cake layers. Pour the unset jelly over the top layer of sponge then the Brandy AND Port. Leave till the jelly sets. Then make your custard. Let the custard cool a little before pouring it on. Let it cool nicely before adding the whipped cream. Sometimes, I grate a little chocolate on top, just because I can. :)
You go Thomas, she will never miss that one cube.
LOL
We love these.. I've been making them for years now !! Using all different kinds of fruit and toppings. Thanks for sharing. Love From Indiana.
Yum….yum…..looks super delicious. Thanks Catherine for another fun family dessert.
Love the way hubby reaches in for a “quality control” bite of cake and promptly “cleans” the bowls. Lol. Totally relatable 😂.
This might be one of my all time favorite desserts! Looks amazing and sooo delicious with all those scrumptious flavors rolled in one!!!👍😋🍓🍓🍰
YOU CAN ALSO OIL YOUR PANS AND USE ABOUT 1 TBLSP OF DRY CAKE MIX TO FLOUR THE PAN...A NEAT TRICK I LEARNED YEARS AGO 😉😁 (EDIT: I USE CAPS FOR EYESIGHT IMPAIRED)
No worries on the caps, I just assumed you really enjoyed the video.
@@CatherinesPlates OH I DID LOLOL
THAT'S A GREAT IDEA. NEVER THOUGHT TO USE CAPS
I love a good sugary add-on. I'm going to do it next time.
Great idea!
“My “First Time” on your “Website!”😊 “Looks “So GOOD!!”😊 “ I’m gonna try this!!”😊💕
Hope you enjoy.
Mine too.
What a nice desert to take to a party. In the summer you could add fresh peaches.
Baker's Joy is made in the US. Thanks for supporting our US brothers!
We ate a similar dessert as kids at my grandma's. While the wait is torture the end result is amazing. I think we'll make it for Father's Day😁
Ok, I'm going to have a dessert and coffee party with this and poke cakes. Thank you for your delicious desserts and family meals!!! 😉
looks good. we used to call this a trifle. served in a bowl with the small pedestal round and the sides were straight to show off the different layers.
can be made with lady fingers, angel food cake, sponge cake, crumbled up white cake, pound cake chunks. and you can give it a 4th of July theme with blueberries the top whipped topping the cake then blueberries and then keep layer. looks really cute with a tall round clear dish so you can see the layers. decorate the top however you like I like a little chocolate kind of swirled around on it with some strawberries and blueberries and of course the whipped topping
I’ve made this for the 4th of July and just added fresh blueberries. Delicious 😋 cool and refreshing when it’s hot.
Yes, it’s allllllllwayssss a big hit!!
You buy a cheap lb. Cake already to go. It taste just as good without the trouble if baking
@@marilynharris4831 We baker’s 👩🏾🍳 love to bake’s. 😁
Great summer-time dessert idea! This would make a great red, white, and blue desert for July 4th! Just replace the bananas with blueberries! I’m gonna try this for the holiday! Thanks for this fun idea!
I have made this and used store-bought angel food cake. Super easy and the white cake looks pretty.
Add colored food dye to the cake before you bake it. Maybe just red and blue "swirls" of color ..? _Then_ add blueberries. You might not see the colored cake at first view, but you will see colors when you start serving ... use 1 drop of every food color, swirl into batter ever so slightly ... then you would have rainbow colors for your Unicorn Birthday Bowl. Kid's would love it! :-)
I have made this but used two angel food cakes . Everyone loves this cake and I never have any left if I take it to a dinner. We all love it!
My cousin makes this for all of our family get togethers. We call it Garbage. It's the only garbage I'll every eat. Good stuff!
I agree with your husband. "What? Overnight?!" Looks so smooth, creamy and dreamy. Nice presentation. I might add toasted sliced almonds before serving to add a crunch. Why am I thinking broken pretzels might taste good on top? The sweet and salty or maybe I'm just hungry for breakfast. Nice recipe Catherine!
Thank you Catherine for a scrumptious dessert! Have a great week ! 👍😎👍❤️💕🥰😋😋😋😋😋🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Thank you! You too!
Hi Catherine and hubby, I am so glad I found you. These videos are not only informative but they are entertaining too. To see plates automatically appear when it's time for a plate or to see a bowl disappear when you are done with it. Everyone wants a magic helpful kitchen like yours. Lol! Just kidding you to make a good baking or cooking team. Keep up the fun.
Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for sharing all your great recipes your son and your daughter helping you out
Thank you!! This gives me great ideas for a fancy desert when I host Erev Shabbat . I’m thinking of layering it in wine glasses for individual deserts. Cutting the cake with a biscuit cutter, maybe adding 2 slices of kiwi for color in the thinner parts of the glasses. The possibilities are endless 🤗. Yummy!! I really liked the very down to earth, “Welcome to my kitchen” feel and the interaction with hubby is priceless. Y’all are precious. Thanks so much for sharing, shalom.
So happy you enjoy.
I’m fixing this on Father’s Day. My adult kids are coming into town and we’re having a get together. Looks so yummy!
Hope you enjoy.
My punch bowl cake is for chocolate lovers. I use chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, whip topping and snicker candy bars. Put you candy bars in the freezer first. Make your cake then layer cake , pudding crack up your bars and sprinkle over pudding then whip topping. Repeat. Final layer of whip topping then sprinkle remaining cracked snicker bars on top. Also when making pudding make with half n half or whipping cream to give it a more thicker consistency. Oh so good.
that sounds amazing! I'm going to have to try since I'm a chocoholic 🤣🍫
I have a recipe where you use brownies instead of cake - and since I usually make it at Christmas or Thanksgiving when I'm making a lot of dishes, I cheap and use brownies bites from Walmart rather than make them myself.
Sounds amazing
Awe snap!!!!! Now I gotta make both for my birthday!!!!!!!
Looks great.
My mom used to make this for Christmas but I never got a chance to get her to teach me how she did it before she passed away, it was a favorite of us kids she also added pecans and maraschino 🍒 Thank you for posting this, I will make it for my kids & grandchildren this Christmas and teach them how to make it so the tradition can start back up and be carried on❤❤
It is a traditional Christmas dish, most British adults have this with the cake soaked in brandy or sherry. Kids would have their own.. Check out the Victorian cooking show on youtube.
Love your always smiling happy attitude 😊
Thank you.
You & *the crew* are just too funny!...hubby behind the scene..& his comments ...PRICE.LESS...love it!
They love your cookin* too!...Another good one to *take.somewhere*...

You are so easy to listen to! You are also so good at explaining the instructions!
Thank you for sharing. God bless you!
Thank you so much.
That punch bowl cake dessert looks delicious.
I’d loved to have seen the look on your hubby’s face when you said place bowl in fridge over nite and hubby said what? Lol
I love licking the bowls as well.
Who wants a piece of this cake and hubby take the bowl. Too funny.
He is crazy, but does love my desserts.
awesome job soooooo many way to take this!!!!! my niece does the exact sane walk through.. only hers is called death by chocolate.. choc cake/ choc pudding instead of fruit she breaks up whatever kind of choc candy, whe does use whipping cream and on top pieces of choc candy again yummmmmmm this would also be awesome for the 4th of july or christmas or valentines etc...
That sounds awesome.
I do mine with Snickers candy bar chocolate cake and choc pudding and whip topping. So good.
Be great with mixed berries also! Awesome recipe! A trifle in a punch bowl. All sorts of variations possible.
Even throw in set jelly though no frozen or canned fruit. All fresh fruit. I throw in fresh pitted cherries.
Also known as trfle in Ireland and UK
My husband's favourite.in.our house we use the lady finger biscuits first layer soaked in the strawberry jelly.the next layer of custard then a layer of cream if your feeling festive sherry in the jelly layer! All topped of with a layer of creak.amd sprinkles.inthe 80s we used a desert called dream topping which was like a cream dessert instead of the cream layer.thatwas mostly the made from the box type though.enjoy your trifle.🇮🇪☘️💕
I also think you could make this for a wedding
Great for showers as well!
Shower yes
Omg Catherine, this looks so delicious and it's so pretty.. thank you so much for sharing your recipe 😋🤤 fantastic job 👍💐 many good wishes and God's blessings to you all 😇💚🌻💛😊
after you put on the whipped cream & strawberries, you should have told Thomas it would have to be refrigerated for another 4 hours LOL
LOL

What a fun dessert! There are endless variations to experiment with.
Perfect I have a viewing to go to where I have to bring a dessert. This is right one thank you so much.
So it's basically a Texas sized truffle! Who'd a thought to do that! Great idea for 4th of July.
Catherine, you're a legend again.
Thank you.
Very nice sharing 💙💙
OH MY GOD THAT LOOKS YUMMY! I'M GOING TO MAKE IT!!!!
I think I may make this for father's day but I'll replace the bananas with blueberries, and I'll use entermanns pound cake.

Another winner! I'm going to have to make this for my mom's birthday! She loves stuff like this and it has all of her favorite fruits! Thank you!😘💕

You are my favorite! It's not easy finding, what I consider, homestyle recipes! Thank you, thank you!
You are so welcome!
I have made punch bowl cake for years. At every family get together I have to bring punch bowl cake. I use angel food cake, strawberries or frozen strawberries, strawberry pie filling, banana cream jello pudding and cool whip. My family loves it. ❤️🌸
Sounds great!
Yes we’ve been making these for Xmas and thanksgiving for over 34yrs. Along with cool aid pies.
This looks absolutely divine- such a fun huge dessert to bring to a party
Beautiful! That looks so delicious. Thanks for sharing.
I haven't heard the word scrumptious for forever and a day, so thank you for that delightful treat! 🥰 And most of all, this dessert looks so delicious and easy to make that I'm going to give it a shot this weekend! You're the best part of my day, Catherine! And tell Thomas to stop doing his control checks on the cake cubes!! 🤣 Hagaha!!
LOL, he said it's for quality control.
@@CatherinesPlates Hahaha!!! 😄
This is one of those things I miss from the south. It's a good Sunday, after church and everyone is ready for real meal. For me that meal would be fried pork chops, fried and smothered cabbage, cinnamon roasted sweet potatoes, and marinated tomato and cucumber salad, to he washed down with sweet tea. For dessert, not a trifle, a punch bowl cake tops that off grandly. God bless you for showing the people how it's done. You put your foots in it!
Your Sunday meal sounds delicious.
@@CatherinesPlates yumm!
Actually it's british!
That teapot lamp is fabulous.
Thanks, I got it from amazon.
You are an EXCELLENT teacher! Every question I thought I might have was answered. Great presentation. Thank you.

What a great dessert for summer potlucks,
Yep going to make this yum
This is trifle and has been around since victorian times!
I was just going to post the same thing, this is Trifle and served to every child & adult in the UK 🇬🇧
yes but this woman posted it!
When you say this is trifle is that a negative connotation
Looks delicious Catherine.I loves punch bowl 🍰 cake.TFS
Thanks for sharing, I would use Entermanns pound cake and also top it with dark chocolate curls.
Great idea with the Entermanns pound cake which I happen to love!!!
We call these desserts Trifle. I find it's quicker, in a pinch, to use a store bought Angel Food Cake.
I use vanilla pound cake its so much easier
Great idea
Thank you! 😊
I love all your videos!! Thank you for sharing your talents!!👌👏👍💜
You are so welcome!
Love a Trifle! ...the variations are endless. 🍨
I use jelly as well in mine. I set my jelly separately. Then cut up and throw in.
We make one similar with angel food cake. We put it in a trifle bowl. Slice in 3 layers. Get lots of blueberries, strawberries and raspberries.we use cool whip and make a thin pudding too. Put 1 cake layer down and spread strawberry jam then add the berries and drizzle thin pudding and add cool whip. Follow through with the same process for the other 2 layers. Put in fridge for 2 hours then serve up. Yum.
Oh Yum !
I like how hubby grabs the pudding bowl, and a chunk of the cake, omg, I dont blame him
LOL, he couldn't wait.
OMG I would of love to eat a bowl when you was eating, thank you for sharing your talent
Looks Absolutely Delicious!! I can't wait to try this this weekend for Father's Day!! ❤
My brother likes chocolate and cherry punch bowl cake. 💚. You can make it anyway you like!! 🦋. I actually layer everything. Cake, pudding, fruit, cool whip then repeat. Will have 3 or 4 layers. End with cool whip on top. It’s not complicated!!💜
I do appreciate how you give us sizes of boxes of ingredients. And I too switch out ingredients for box cake mixes plus I always add some pure vanilla.
