    Could you do a video on switching from soil to pon but more in depth like where to have the water level, does the water need to be touching the roots? And how to fertilize with pon. Just a total in depth all about pon care video. I really want to switch my alocasias to pon but I just haven’t found all the info I need no matter how many videos I watch.

    Also it is super easy to DIY a self watering pot! For some reason 16 oz clear Deli cups fit great into most 6in and 4-inch pots! But any clear recycled container that fits inside a decorative waterproof container seems to work very nicely for me😊

    I have been using Lechuza pon for over 4 years. I started using pon and Lechuza planters for my Calathea and vey quickly transferred most of the plants I had at that time. Fast forward to present day, I still use pon and self watering plants. Lechuza planters are hands down my favorite but they are pricey especially the very large ones! I have also used planters from Dexeder, Aquaphoric and Gardenix with success. I have used a few other planters that I would not recommend.

    I know you said you won’t even sugarcoat it… the fact that Pon is expensive. I have a solution. The best DIY material for homemade Pon is the clay product Oil-Dri. It’s made, like the name implies, to soak up oil spills on garage floors or in auto shops. But at the end of the day, it’s simply LECA. It’s a lightweight, expanded clay aggregate product, but in pretty gray flakes! Functions exactly the same way as LECA but it’s just not in red clay ball form. 😂 And the best part is there are multiple sources, size options & prices online for it. Or you can maybe find it at local auto or hardware stores if you’re lucky. My hardware store sells 50 lb. bags for $29.99, which is pretty amazing in my opinion, compared to some of the Lechuza deals. If you go online though, there are even better deals, like…three 40 lb. bags for $75. It’s the best stuff, for semi-hydro, for adding drainage to soil, or even just layering on top of soil, as a topdressing, with potted plants. The gray color looks nice against all plants. I’ve even used it in my planted aquariums and it doesn’t break down!
    For my DIY Pon, I use the Oil-Dri flakes, perlite or pumice (but it’s not even needed, tbh), Osmocote for fertilizer (depending on plant), and a blend of zeolite and charcoal, which you can buy as a pre-made mix from PetSmart or Petco, in the aquarium section. It’s made by Fluval, the same brand that makes the Stratum substrate… it’s like $12 for at least a pound.

      Thank you for the kind words. It depends on the type of self watering planter I use. Some I have no choice but to water from the top to get water to the reservoir. On certain finicky plants that I’ve newly transferred I’ll water from the top until it grows enough roots to handle a reservoir full of water.

    Hi Dana, love your videos! I just found you two weeks ago and ordered pon from Etsy after playing myself and letting my pon filled cart on the lechuza website sit. Anyway learned my lesson fast about grabbing them cause even if you get a decent price for the product, these vendors play games with 50 dollar shipping!
    Anyway I had a question about alocacias and pon, if you are growing corms or reporting plants, do you keep the zeolite in it. I didn’t buy the unfertilized version but I did get the recommended liquid fertilizer in your store. Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    • @leafydiva
      @leafydiva  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Oh my goodness, so sad you had to learn the hard way about letting your Lechuza cart stay idle for too long! I remember during one Pon shortage I got an email that it was back in stock. I went to the site, put it my cart and lost it because I thought I had time to browse the site and look at other stuff. Lesson learned! 😅
      About the corms. I usually grow mine in moss and transfer it to Pon after it’s developed enough roots.

      I believe it’s a game changer! At the time, I was transitioning, multiple delicate root plants like begonias to Lechuza-Pon. The roots were so delicate that the minute they got wet, they became difficult to work with, broke easily and stuck together. It would set the plant back so much. One day I got two begonias in, and decided not to wash their roots and just dust them instead. To my surprise, both of them took to Pon without skipping a beat. I was sold at that point! 😅

    The best self watering pots I have found are called ANUBIAS. Lechuzan pots are too expensive. I love PON but it makes it difficult to move your plants back to coco. I killed my first Thai Constellation that way. You can't use PON for every plant.

      I’m on Amazon almost everyday and I’ve never seen those planters. I just added them to my wishlist! They seem to be the same kind as the ones I showed in the video, just a different style which I like. Thanks for sharing.
      I’ve had both of my Thai’s in Pon for over a year. They are thriving but I babied the heck out of them the first few months to make sure the transition went smoothly. 😅

      @@leafydiva I have tons of self watering pots and to be honest, I don't like them much, there is another set that I like ( 4 Inch Self Watering Planter 8 Set - Modern Flower Pot with Water Level Indicator - 4.5 Inch Tall - for All House Plants,Flowers,Herbs.) These pots are short but good for smaller plants. The ones you put on your list are neat, slim, deep where you can put soil to the bottom, add your plants and additional soil. Both of these pots don't cram your roots, but grow through the holes which is why I don't like these types of pots much. Sorry forgot to mentions those animated pots with eyes or raindrops are a no go! Killed a few of my plants. Those pots are too deep and don't allow the plant to dry out.
