I'm not Australian, but I've followed how Australian sporting bodies develop its grass roots for many years. The story is one of committed long-term support from very early ages and the results are there for all to see. This support importantly doesn't mollycoddle the participants, yet instills in everyone a healthy competitive streak that also bonds the players, coaches and sponsors. I'm fully behind the women's football team and hope they win through to the final.

I went to one of the Matilda's games in France in 2019 at Valencienne vs Italy. The team I see watching on screen in Italy playing each of their games in this tournament is head and shoulders above the Matildas of 4 years ago. There is the professionalism, fitness, team culture, friendships, and skills of the highest order. And that is why they are playing in a World Cup semi-final. Yes, the big home crowds are impressive, but for me, most impressive is that this team has arrived bringing women's soccer to the highest level of elite sport. There certainly is something going on with Australian women's sport at the international elite level - in this sport [possibly the highest achievement] and in track and field, cricket, netball [a smaller pool], certainly swimming, cycling, and basketball! And I proudly support this team. Go Matildas!!

She is a cheat...she deliberatly encroached during the penalty shootout. First time the French girl scored so the officials did nothing. She blatantly does it again on the next kick but because the French girl misses she is penalised forcing the French girl to have to retake under the massive pressure. Cynical sportsmanship at its very worse.Same old Aussies, win AT ALL COSTS. Mo honour no morals. Not in the spirit of the game.

The English press are desperate for sound bites about the AUS-ENG rivalry but the reality is that it hasn't been a thing in women's football. Macca doesn't get distracted by these questions and just says it how it is - indeed they'd all be psyched for whoever they're playing in the semis.
