For those who saying why can't he just lift it without standing between the spikes or just lift it. Look at the device carefully and look at Bobby's height compared to the machine. Bobby has no choice but to stand in the middle because he isn't tall enough and the bars he has to lift has weight stacks attached to the machine. So he has no choice but to do the proper form in order to do the trap correctly. Him half assing it wouldn't work. As you can see at 0:38 he tried lifting it with just his hands and couldn't do it, the machine is attached to the pulley that is pulling the girl closer to the spikes so the pulley is possibly adding to the difficulty of keeping the spiked bars steady.

Wanna know a trap I would design myself??
No I wouldn’t use it irl but…
I would first find a good factory room. Have a bunch of heavy packages going up the ramps and either being dumped on someone’s body, or being cancelled. But either way, I would tie an enemy up to a chair in the center of the factory, but just wish ropes, and give them a 3 minute timer to escape. To escape, they’re would be a saw near the chair the enemy is tied to. The chair with the saw would have automatic wheels attached to it that will send it to you. But, to get the wheels to work, you must hold your breath for 1 minute, on a breathing scale, that has attached a chain to it that will send it fast into the wheeled chair to get the saw to cut the ropes. Then you can get out and escape. Or if you hadn’t taken enough breaths, it would be too late and the lever will send the large packages on top of you, containing knives and other weapons, that could shoot or stab you, and you would be dead somehow.
Idk why I thought of that but yeah it may not even work tho

He had to stand beneath the spikes because he wasn't tall enough to push the bars up
Observe the machine closely. It's made to accommodate his height. Jigsaw doesn't cut corners ;)
Even though it doesn't look like it, those spikes are actually helping him out. They're keeping him somewhat in place.

The traps of this movie were ridiculously harder than the ones from the previous films. Jigsaw wanted Bobby to fail in all of them.

This machine was not fair, it depended too much upon strength rather than will
The traps from this movie were all impossible in different ways:
In the hanging trap it's unrealistic for someone to not lose their balance on a beam when they can't see and their ears are covered.
The ring trap as you said, depends too much on physical strength.
The Silence Circle would be impossible to survive having your insides cut up.
The wife's trap at the end was inescapable and she was innocent.
I also think it would be impossible to pull your own wisdom teeth out, you would bleed out without gauze if you didn't pass out from the pain first.
This movie was gratuitous and that factor is about the only thing going for it.

This is my favorite trap of the movie, it’s so simple and terrifying having to watch your death slowly creep towards you. Also reminds me of the eye piercing scene from Lucio Fulci’s Zombi.
I prefer the key inside the acid... It's pretty terrifying when the victim thinks the key will save her but actually use to activate the trap. It rips open her chest and stomach showing her internal organs.🤔

The later films really turned into a gore fest instead of some people surviving and supposedly learning to value their lives. Bobby had a chance to save four lives, and he completely blew it. Then you have Hoffman stealth killing countless people to put someone in an inescapable trap, and then winds up in an inescapable trap himself.

I guess everyone else is probably thinking this, but did Bobby really do anything evil? Like he just made a book that helps people appreciate their lives more and come to terms with their trauma from jigsaw. Like it doesn't hurt anyone, and actually spreads John's message
The reason Jigsaw victimizes Bobby was for exploiting Jigsaw's publicity and making money off of a story Booby had made up.
But, on some level, I personally feel like Jigsaw also was just resentfully jealous that Bobby could potentially do better than Jigsaw at getting people to appreciate their lives.
I mean, Jigsaw comes up with all these deadly, elaborate challenges that ultimately fail to change anyone for the better; the few people who actually survive their "game".
Bobby, by contrast, seemed to have largely succeeded in inspiring others to appreciate their lives more through mere lies. And to rub salt in the wound, Booby makes a freaking fortune off of his fake story while doing so!
