- In this video we answer more of the biggest questions we get from our wonderful followers. This time we answer why we bought this boat, what we like about it, and what we don't like. We do this while we cruise south towards the Bahamas for the 2017/2018 Winter season. If you like this video and would like to have your questions answered in a future episode, write them in the comments below.

We are a Canadian cruising couple, looking for a non mainstream life of living aboard and cruising in the Caribbean in Winter, and the Great Lakes in Summer. Working when we can to fill the cruising kitty. We have sold everything we own, and we now own a cruising boat. We have chosen to do this voyaging under power, instead of the popular sailing route.
Our mission is to help inspire people to live their dreams earlier in life, instead of waiting until retirement. So often retirement dreams are dashed by health issues, or other unforeseen later life circumstances. If you have a dream, then dream, plan, and do it now. We hope to make you smile, and spark the urning in your heart for fulfilling your dreams.

Mom and I just finished watching your superb video guys. Loved it. May the winds continue to be in your favour.
Should give tour of boat
Really enjoyed the video. Very pertinent to what we are getting ready to do. Thank you for taking the time to make this informative video. GOD bless. JC
Glad to see you guys still doing it
Great video and content on your channel. Keep up the excellent work. Really enjoyed your blogpost about the other boats you considered.
Thanks Rex!
Hope to see you guys soon!
Great video and very good info on your Tollycraft. Welcome to the U.S and may you have safe travels and a great trip.
urban solar offgrid thank you.
Hey guys, thanks for this video and all the others. Only just found you guys but glad I did! There are lots of great channels out there but I get the feeling you guys are "Real" and i appreciate that. I have some questions way too long for public comment.. Is there a way i can send you an E mail? Keep up the good work. Super info on the Tolly. Cheers, The Bolton Wanderer.
Thanks for the reply re the ICW
Thankyou....great informative vid..
Gene Coppola thank you.
A 44' TC just came available here in Seattle. Good to hear what you like and dislike. Our Bayliner 4087, also has the same issue with the holding tank. We feared we would have to cut apart the bed, but thank God it wasn't leaking after all.
Are you going after that 44?
I'm not familiar with the Tollycraft construction, but most fiberglass boats are 2 part construction. The hull, and the cap. The cap is typically attached to the hull with screws that are then covered by the rub rail. If your boat is made that way, you could theoretically remove the cap to service or replace anything and everything in the boat, waste tanks included. Not an easy task of course, but might be better than cutting huge holes in decks.
Natures head! We made the switch on our live aboard 42' Californian LRC. We have 3 kids and the head is amazing 😉
Yes, we have researched that. I (Shel) am ok with it, and if something were to fail I'd like to replace with Natures Head. However Cyndi isn't so convinced. Not sure if she will ever come around. lol
Great Video! Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Cheers!
The fuel tanks are pains to replace had to cut floor on ours other than that we love our tolly great sound boats great in rough water and best bang for your buck
Love the video explaining your thought process in choosing the Tollycraft (tele crappy, lol, gotta love talk to text). Looking forward to watching the rest. We've got a Carver 390 CPMY and my next boat will definitely have an engine room I don't have to be a contortionist to service it. How's the ER in yours? Keep on livin' the dream!
Thanks Joe! Did it really say tele crappy for Tollycraft? LOL
The engine room isn't bad in the Tollycrafts. Better than most 44s with twins I have been on. Actually getter than some 50 footers I've been on. There is nothing I can't get to in the engine room. The hardest thing I'd say is the engine with the raw water pump on the outside of the engine. I have to use a mirror to unscrew the plate and replace the impeller.
As an (ex) Kanuk - I love hearing your accents. I wanted to revisit this intro video. Love you guys. Keep it real.
Haha. Thanks! Cheers!
I am new. Thank you very much!
Thanks Guys ,,Helping to clarify our motor boat choices,,, From Australia, Not sure if Tollycraft available here,
I graduated from State University of NY @ Oswego. My house while I was a Junior and Senior overlooked Wrights landing Marina. Pretty cool to hear you guys mention Oswego.
Oswego is a great stopover.
Is it pronounced OS WEE GO or OS WAY GO
@@RB-ni8vm Os Wee go I used to live there
Good to see you guys, and I’m wondering if the boat comes with the hard top or not looks very light, can you send me information about it , I have a similar boat Offshore 48 that needs a solution like yours. Keep going may be I’ll catch you some where.
I'm only 30 seconds in but couldn't resist to say YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My wife and I are getting closer and closer to making a BIG change in our lives in order to spend a lot more time on the water. I was up at the marina today tending to our boat and became very depressed seeing a large number of boats pulled from the water being winterized and shrink wrapped. Hopefully we'll get one more fall outing on the water within the next week or two before the long wait for the start of the 2018 season. Your videos will help us get through the winter doldrums......PLEASE post fresh videos as much as possible! :-) We hope to meet up with you guys sometime!
Move to the west coast:) we can boat year round here and it is nice:)
Way to add salt to the wound! 🙂 I am envious of you folks on the west and those in the south this time of year....I can only imagine what it must be like to have the boat in the water 365 days a year.
Thanks so much radiocontester, we will do our best to get videos out. We know how you feel, putting the boat away is a horrible feeling.
enjoyed
Very good video. Easy to watch. I want to buy a boat like this one in a couple of years.
Awesome! Go for it!
@@SearchingforCShels I plan on it. I might have to start lower and work my way up, but that's my target.
thank you for the NAFTA info
No problem Steve, just keep in mind there are some changed since that video. Not sure if it is still the case but it may be that even US build boats may be subject to duties.
I have a tolly 57 wide body and their great boats
I know why you bought a Tollycraft!!! One helluva boat!!! That is why!!!
Like Your vids)) followed You for some time. Seems like this boat is fairly easy to maintain when it´s up to date and the economy surpized me.
As to the washing machine I believe You made the same mistake than I did. I recomend You try a portable spin dry machine.
First of all they are very light weight and come in all sizes. That means You can store it away in any corner or where ever out of the way. And when You wanna use it You just set it up in 2 minutes in any convenient location. That could even mean on the deck...... It´s just temporary.
Second, since there is only a spinning cycle the energy requiered is only about some 15-20 amps for 1 hour,( 5-7 loads @ 8Lbs. So You don´t even need to run a generator. and the electrical installation is easy. Some of those machines also run on 12 volts and people use them in RVs.
Third: Those machines are out of plastic and have only an electric motor. They cost around 100$ on Amazon. For that money I might not even bother to fix and buy a new one.
What I most hate about the laundromat and marinas..... I have to carry the cloths, I have to do it every time because who knows when I get the next chance and than the boring task of waiting. Of course You can also give it away but than maybe You end up with some pants that are not Yours.
When You really observe....after washing the semi drying with spinning is the most important part. After that it takes a fraction of time to dry with the wind and the sun. Mmm, and the sheets in the bedroom smell good.🍃🌸 🍃💕
Here is a mod that You might wanna check out but there are many on Amazon. Maybe also Walmart sells them. There are also lot´s of Ytube videos how they operate

Cheers
warrior90 thanks so much for the info. Greatly appreciated. We actually do have a small washer like that, it's called a Panda I think. We break it out in emergencies. There is also the Yirego we would like to try as well.
thank you
No, thank you for watching.
Looking at a looper boat and the Tollycraft 44 CPMY was at the top of the list. Im on the east coast so they are hard. lots of Carvers and Silvertons, i like those at well but the tolly seems more me....
The Tolly really is a different boat than the Carvers and Silvertons. The Tolly was made for the waters of the PNW. It's a good sea boat.
It would be nice to buy quality 👍👍🥃🥃
The BOSS doesn’t want to do the loop, Shel. She wants the Bahamas!!
lol
I agree with you on the waste tank! We have a 34 and find it to be small(although much better since adding the Tecma head). Did you do anything on your 34 or just live with what was there? Great video, looking forward to following your trip! We are in RI, if you are in the neighborhood hit us up
Buena Vida thank you. No we didn't do anything with the 34. It was fine for the type of boating we use to do.
Keep on making videos this is George and Tami
Jorge Goncalves only if you keep watching! Hope you guys are doing well.
Lol, watch the video with the closed captions on.😂😂😂, cindy while saying I like the v birth, caption says I like the beaver, and the a quite a few comical cc om there.
🤣
where did the boat you bought comes from , Canada or U.S.? and did you have a buyers agent to help you?
What do you recommend for use isenglass cleaners?
How fast were you going during this video? What were the waves? 1-2'? What cat motors did you say? What is typical economics of slow and fast cruising modes? Speeds and fuel burns? Thanks for the video! (The wife and me and out two dogs completed the loop in 2014 on a Stolkraft)
Im watching your "How much fuel video now... that probably takes care of me, thanks!)
Awesome, I was going to give you the link to that video. Cheers!
Hi Guys, Fabulous video's. Having had the lower helm in the 44' now for a few years, what kind of weight do you give the lower helm's true use fullness and practicality? Wasted space, or still a "must have"? Narrowing down our search, and this something we're struggling with. Thanks in advance!
We actually don't have the lower helm. We wanted one, but didn't get it. We are glad we didn't now, we can only think of a couple of times we might of used it, up north when it was cold. Otherwise it just takes up valuable space. Now, a pilothouse style boat may be a different story, I think we would use a pilothouse quite a bit.
Thanks for the response. Really appreciated! Safe Travels.
What’s the icw? Love the videos by the way
Thanks Malcolm! The ICW is the Intracoastal Waterway, some call it the Intercoastal Waterway. It runs from Norfolk, VA to Miami, and there is one in New Jersey as well. It is for the most part a protected waterway that allows one to cruise the east coast without having to go into the open ocean.
Waste tanks are polyethylene so really should be good for the life of the boat. Always nice to have the option to be able to increase the size but that is one of the compromises you make in a boat. Same for water tanks - unless there is some physical damage it should be good too. Fuel tanks are another story.
I too hate anything to do with my boat's waste system from the heads themselves to the macerators to the tank to the hoses.
What's up for 2018?
I hope you are right, however we have found the weak point in these systems is where the hoses attach to the tank. Over the years it can get brittle and crack if you use pump-out services that have really strong suction. Hopefully we will never have to worry about it. ;-)
I think for 2018 we will head to the Chesapeake for Hurricane season then back down to the Bahamas for winter.
Lucky you folks !because now to buy an American made boat there’s a 10% tariff on it bringing into Canada, Plus the 13% HST😭
I know, the tariff is unbelievable. Very glad we are not buying a US boat right now.
so you went through the erie canal from Oswego NY to Fulton NY?
Yes, through Fulton all the way to Waterford to the Hudson River.
Can a bladder tank be used in black water tank??
We thought of that. However we heard of some difficulties with bladders and pumpout systems. The sucking pressure of some pumpout systems can pull the bladder together and you can't empty the tank. Could even damage the bladder.
Do the tollycraft have cored decks, superstructure. Assume hand layed glass for hull. Thank you. A boat owner with his/her head screwed on right ... rare valuable find. Do you have window water intrusion like the taiwanese tubs?
Thanks for your kind comment. Yes as with most boats the superstructure is cored. It is balsa cored, so in looking at one, you would have to make sure the previous owners did their duty and rebedded hardware when needed. Yes most Tollys have a solid glass hull from the rubrail down. Although there are some older boats where they experimented with a synthetic coring in the hull. The windows are aluminum framed and are easily maintained and rebedded when needed. There is even a place on the west coast that will still make these exact windows for Tollycrafts. We've had 2 older Tollys now, and have never had a major window leaking issue. Any minor leaks were easily spotted and fixed.
Thanks for the questions. Cheers!
Some folks really obsess about galley up - Im not sure they really put much thought into it - they just heard someone else say it usually with the rationale of the cook saying she* doesn't want to be locked away out of the action. I mean how often is that happening? How long do you need to cook for a handful of guests? The captain/ other half is usually spending more of his* time either in the engine room or under the hull - maybe the props and the engine should be out in the salon ;-). im all for equality but boating really has not taken to it much...
This boat (the 44 Tollycraft) is nice in that respect. Though it is a galley down, it does not feel cut off at all. head of the person in the galley is still in view of the entire salon. A tall person like me (Shel) and it doesn't feel like I've left the room. I do know some galley down boats where the cooks disappears. I'm not sure ery many people are catering to guests all the time. Rarely really. The location of the galley wouldn't be much of a consideration to us in a boat.
Do you have stabilizers?
No, we do not have stabilizers. Would be a good upgrade though.
You sound like a couple of Newfoundlanders. that have moved to the mainland.
We are what we are. lol
looks like a green screen haha
When will you guys be posting new content on CZcams?
Sorry. We've struck a busy point again. We have 3 videos almost ready to go. Should be in the next week or so.
Great! Look forward to seeing the updates...been watching your progress on Spot.
Awesome!
What year is your boat ?
She is a 1991.
Sea Ray?
Tollycraft
did you consider a 43 silverton?
No, we went for boats that had a decent reputation of being good sea boats. I don't think the Silverton has that reputation. Though I'm sure with the right weather you could get anywhere coastal or Bahamas in one.
You can find our short list of boats we considered here, www.searchingforcshels.com/sfcs/2015/5/5/searching-for-the-next-c-shel
thanks for replying
Actually, we are seeing that very boat (43 Silverton) cruising here in the Bahamas. Maybe it is a decent option. Just thought we'd mention. :)
that's cool. just curious why you didn't think it was an option previously? hull design? engines? something else? thanks again.
We did and have done no research on this boat... that said, we assumed a boat like that would be a shallow draft planing hull with no keel. Very rolly on the beam, and not able to track all that straight at slower speeds, which we travel most of the time. We tried to stay with a semi-displacement hull with a keel. That said we could be completely wrong. ;-)
Year of boat?
1991
Show the boat. Focus on the engines and performance.
Really miss your videos, writings, ... hope all is well
We are sorry Will C. Everything is well, we are just really busy with "real world" work these days. We will be back soon.
Too bad you didn't show me...what you were talking about.
Can i be your friend ? And come visit
one should read the closed captions for this... ummm someone snuk un some wording you prolly ,,, no no prolly about it, it *WAS NOT WHAT YOU SAID!!!*
some of it was quite comical.. but dude... it needs ''proofre4adingz'' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why are you guys telling us why you bought it, by not showing us the lay out of the boat, don't be shy,😄but be visouly informative, it's just not right on your part.🤔
Sorry it's s post to be ,but not showing us the lay out of the boat, don't be shy, next time pls show us the interior, thank you,😀
I don't like making beds at all, even in a house. Waste of time.
Why is he so arrogant.
Blah Blah Blah just show the boat. I skipped to 18:50 and you were still talking without showing the boat.
so what you are saying is, you want to see the boat....?
Lots of older videos where we show the boat and what we have done to it on our channel. Check the Making a Boat a Home videos.
Yawn
Irritating, self absorbed folks - tuned out shortly into video - lost me at "end of September"
