- In this special one-off episode of BikeRadar’s Hill Climb Diaries, we bring you the best tech and racing action from the 2022 Hill Climb National Championships!
The UK hill climb season is a uniquely British quirk of cycling culture that sees riders, racing in a time trial format, grind up climbs steep enough to make your stomach curdle, on courses between two and 20 minutes long.
With little to no flat sections, there is scant advantage to be found in chasing aero gains. While aero road bikes may dominate in today’s pro peloton, here weight weenie culture is encouraged in its purest form, with bikes, bodies and clothing stripped down to the absolute bare minimum. Chopped-off drop bars, unforgiving carbon saddles, paper-thin tubular tyres and no cake for months on end define this curious section of cycling society.
From interviews with former national champion Tom Bell to in-depth tech checks on the tastiest lightweight, exotic and downright wild bikes raced at the event, this is not the one to miss.

We need more Hill Climb Diaries!
Actually I want more Hill Climb Dairies
🐮
Under a grand for the entire build, that is my main man with the hill climbing plan. And thanks, Jack, for being an enthusiastic roadside correspondent, your coverage really brings these alive for us across the pond and I cheer the two months of mania over these events, everybody get crazy up on that hill. 😀
Hill Climb Diaries will go down as the greatest cycling series on youtube.
Kudos on all the builds too, my fav's are the Aethos and SuperSix Evo but the Dolan fixed just says it all about the scene!
MOAR HCD's!!
Now that's an accolade! Thanks for watching, from all at BikeRadar ⭐
Usually I ream everybody but I'm going to give that presenter a pat on the back, he was very good.
Damn I’d frame this comment on my wall if I was this Presenter😂
Yay, Hill Climb Diaries are back!! Great to see you guys at the top on Sunday morning. More content please next season!!!!
Thanks for your comment! We had an absolute blast. We'll be back next year, maybe we'll catch you there!
Agreed! Btw, don't forget to wear an nta helmet like xnito or bern hudson while riding, cpsc helmets don't really protect you
Great film, really enjoyable, loved the chats on the builds!
My favourite series. Love your work 👍🏻
Thanks! From all at BikeRadar ⭐
Fantastic coverage guys! It was a beautiful day!
Jack rocking the geography teacher look.
It was a bit raw and chaotic...perfect.
Very cool racing format. I hope it catches on in the states.
Disc for dirt and rim for road.
Well said.
YES !!!!!!
i'm having suspicions on Joanna's bike being 4.2kg, did the math and it should be somewhere along the lines of 4.4-4.6kg especially with favero duo power pedals
Epic vid guys really enjoyed it 👍🤩🚴🏅
Great to hear! Thanks for watching 😁
More hill climb diaries next year please!!!
We'll be there!! And thanks for watching - Felix
Jack, fantastic video, great to see Hill Climb Diaries back.... fantastic bikes, great to hear from Tom Bell. But the big question on everyone's, or maybe just my, lips is.... could you tell us where you got your green jumper from please?
Ha! It’s a vintage lambs wool number from Hawick 😂 Jack
Need more!!
Great work chaps. You are to video editing what Gardner and Feather are to hill climb racing!
Hill Climb Diaries, wooooooooooooooo! ❤
Great to see Jack representing Gorilla CCC top work!
This is my favourite thing you guys do
Thanks for your comment!
I randomly ended up going up this climb last week, it took me 11:30 ish and I was pleased with that but left thinking I needed a bigger cog on the rear. Now I see a this and there are people on fixies with relatively massive gears cruising up in less than 7 mins. That's depressing.
There's something about a good climb.
YESSS!
This is What a bike i supposed to be. LIGHT and SIMPLE
Awesome Report Guys.
Thanks for watching!
Thx!
Thanks for watching!
Nice video
Great stuff.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
A single gear bike somewhat makes sense for a hill climb, if you can keep up the power needed for it you just dropped an extra 10 gears' worth of gs and other parts needed to function.
Probably won't work for next year's nationals on the struggle as the gradient ranges from 20% to -3%
Great vid ... All you needed was the Grandstand music and a mustache with that mic and coat 😁 ... Dicky .... Could of been better if you gave the top 3 or so finishers ? 😭
This video just highlights how long it takes bikeradar to publish a video
We normally don’t stay up till the wee small hours to make a video - please don’t get used to it! Haha. Jack and Felix
At least the disc brake on Natalie's bike weren't slowing her down.
YEEEESSSS !!
Yeah
#rimbrakesarefaster
Where can you find out information on Hill Climbing events, please? Going to give it a go in 2024. Thanks in advance
Hey, this is who organises them in the UK www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/
Coach Glyn, dribble chin
TASTY
I'm glad to see that the Mr Pink is still going stronf.
I don’t think I’ll ever stop riding it!
Did 'Radar's Bell beat GCN's Feather?
LETS FUCKIN GOOO MORE HILL CLIMB
Those big sprockets add weight.
do they do it at the end of the season because of the toll on the knees or because the fitness is at the highest haha
Now see the actual race: czcams.com/video/t8yfYIGwH78/video.html
Harris Potter as reporter
Didn't mention Andrew Feather,any reason?
Hey Stephen! We've shown Andrew more than enough love on BikeRadar over the years 😘www.bikeradar.com/advice/fitness-and-training/andrew-feather-hill-climb-champion/
10:01 HARRY MAC?
Great to see Andrew annihilate the field
It was very close between him and Tom Bell - only two seconds in it - but those two were a leg above everybody else in a very high-quality field, like Illi Gardner was for the women.
I my experience disc brake slow U down, to be fair so do rim breaks, just not as much ; -)
Who won?
hiiii yahhhhhhh
🕺🕺
The chapter markers for Jo and Natalie are reversed
Oops - my mistake! I will sort it now, Jack
@@bikeradar great video btw!
Harry Potter has been reported
hill bike > overcomplicated modern aero brick
Why don’t riders remove the brakes? I mean, this is not a UCI event. They should remove everything unnecessary.
The organisers have rules which mandate 2 braking devices
So u could have a fixie with one brake
@@blinmann7007 Ah thanks, good to know.
Could you fit a no-freewheel-hub with a cassette ? Usually fixes are single speed, but I can't imagine why you couldn't. No rear brake + a few gears sounds ideal for this type of events.
Disc suck for hill climbing, they rub, you pay more for heavier bikes… just imagine how light her bike would be if it was rim. It’s not an every day riding bike anyway.
If it was hill descending, then I'd find it far more interesting.......
Wait till you hear about downhill racing! czcams.com/video/wVX-bFB6NnA/video.html
Rim brakes ...... they are the bible !!!
Who won?
Andrew Feather won the main event on his Cannondale SuperSix EVO HiMod.
