  • Ri names were a naming convention used by Chinese monarchs, nobles, and commoners during the pre Qin period, ending with "heavenly stems" and becoming their temple names after death. The Ri naming system prevailed in the Xia and Shang dynasties and the early Western Zhou period. After the reform of the ritual system in the middle of the Western Zhou period, it was gradually replaced by posthumous titles, but there were still remnants in the southern region until the Warring States period.
