    Fun fact the name Tolkien is contained within the name Thorkelin who was the first translator of Beowulf. Cheers from Mercia the original Shire

    The deluxe editions of the past are as you said very well made. I would actually put some other earlier deluxe editions as exemplary in build quality, such as the Lord of the Rings India Paper first edition deluxe 1969, or The Hobbit First Deluxe Edition 1976. However I find that the editions I have read mostly as books in my hand, are the small black paperback books with Tolkiens own cover designs on them, and the deluxe versions are just not as comfortable to read in the hand,.

      Couldn’t agree more. Well said! 🙂

    I think it's a shame that that book doesn't open really well that's what stopped me buying this deluxe edition

      Really? How so? I haven’t experienced any such issues with it so far.

    So I was going to read The Lord of the Rings again when I stumbled upon your (James Moffett) book Haestingas and ordered a copy. Just got it, and I'm about to read it. It looks good!

      I'm about half way through. It's really good. Reminiscent of Homer, or Virgil, The Song of Roland, Beowulf, and Sir Walter Scott.

    I have the 4th printing from China and it is indeed the lighter brown. I believe the 3rd printing is a completely different colour again; a pale green, very similar to Tales From the Perilous Realm. Then there is the blue illustrated edition. The hardcore collectors have to have all the colours!

    Just came across your channel and I absolutely love your passion for LoTR. I am just getting started on the Tolkien journey. Was wondering which Hobbit edition to get as of today? I am confused lol.

      Hey there! Thanks so much for your kind words 🙂 As for which edition to get, I always ask whether you’re looking for a copy to read or to simply collect - as certain editions are quite impractical to read (such as the Deluxe), but great for collecting. Overall I’d say Alan Lee’s illustrated edition released a few years back as part of a box set with LOTR may strike the perfect balance 🙂

      @@brewingbooks Thank you very much for your reply. I was wondering if they have a good binding. As far as I have seen, all the Harper LoTR books are glued and not sewn. Does the Allan Lee one have good binding?

      As a starting point you might want to consider Alan Lee’s illustrated box set containing The Hobbit and LOTR. Price is not exaggerated, and the presentation of the books, with Lee’s illustrations, make this a fantastic beginner set. Certainly something to consider, to start you off 🙂

    Are you going to cover the new reprintings of the History of Middle-earth books? They have some absolutely beautiful covers. They aren't illustrated or anything, but it is nice to have them in covers that match the more modern covers of all the other books that have come out recently

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  Před 4 měsíci

      They certainly look lovely, but for the time being I’ll have to pass. The price is too steep for a series of books which I’ve already got in paperback format and as a 3-volume hardback set. I think I’m set for now with the HoME series 😅

  • @cedricch81

    Is the Chinese print just the 4th? Because I have a 7th print, printed in Italy by LEGO and it is dark brown like the 1st

    Maybe the publisher thought we would rather regard the deluxe edition as a collect rather than a book for reading.

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Perhaps, true. Personally, that’s how I view deluxe editions. I certainly find paperbacks much more convenient and practical for reading.
