In this video, I head out to the west coast of Vancouver Island to the Port Renfrew area in search of old-growth forests to photograph. I end up at the Avatar Grove, Eden Grove and an unnamed grove of western red cedar trees surrounding a beautiful stream.

It's incomprehensible that logging is allowed in the old growth areas! Haven't we evolved enough as a species yet to understand they are irreplaceable? Apparently not. Great images and a classic opening sequence. You really need to put all those together one day in a highlights reel! Cheers Adam.

  • @josebainakielorriagaarriet2066

In Spain, years ago, some medieval watchtowers that ran along the entire Mediterranean coast were about to disappear, due to real estate speculation, but photographic associations began to campaign with exhibitions, photographic competitions and conferences ... In that way they managed save a few. An expensive idea to recover those ancient forests ...

Carry a handle held chain saw with you. It’s just a small bit of chain with fabric handles from Amazon. It would allow you to cut away any deadwood and shift it out the way if you ever need to, like in the last shot.

Beautiful scenery....love the old growth groves here in WA and OR...wish there were more. The gfx100 is intense. Oof. Thank you Adam for yet another fantastic video from the west coast of British Colombia. Above all I like to thank you for bringing up the heart wrenching topic of logging again. Unfortunately I can tell you that what you said about the politics over there is true here in Sweden as well. As we speak, our type of old growth is being logged although we do have laws to protect them. The big corporations have ways of getting around these legislations over and over again. The sad part is that up here in the far north it takes ages for a destroyed forest to grow back again. What many seams to miss is that when these old trees are gone so is the undergrowth as well, as you mentioned. The whole environment is destroyed for many hundred of years to come! Many species of flora and fauna are lost for ever! We talk a lot about the Amazon and Borneo being logged to death (which is a true disaster for sure) but at the same time we are logging the old forests in our own backyard to death too. The hypocrisy is absolutely astonishing. For shame!

So pleased you've bought one Adam. I was rather hoping Thomas Heaton had spoken to you like he said he was going to do about your 50R experience, and possibly get a 50R himself. I would love to see how you fly your drone in the opening scene. Do you fly forward and then reverse the video? Is collision avoidance turned off? What drone do you use? Are you flying slower and then speed up the video in post? You seem to have mastered the "close quarters" drone flying better than anyone I know of. One or more sessions on your approach to flying drones and capturing video would be valued VERY MUCH!

We're down to about 2% coverage for ancient woodland in the UK. It's essentially irreplaceable, biodiversity rich habit that brings mental well-being to millions of people, yet we're removing it to build railways through and houses on, and those who stand up to it are called do-gooders and treehuggers. We're in a bad place as far as the environment is concerned, these days.

    • @alannorthdevonuk763
      @alannorthdevonuk763 Před 3 lety +1

I agree. In recent years here in North Devon we have lost two ancient woodlands to development. In return we now boast a Lidls, a McDonalds and a 'pizzeria' and a large housing estate the current infrastructure can't support.

But congrats on the GFX 100! I've just had a similar situation with a 'can't be refused' deal on a used D850 the only thing I didn't get with it was an XQD card and the L-component for the RRS plate that came on it.

I'm thinking the pixel shifting Fuji does may be similar to what Olympus does with some of their camera bodies. You may want to check out Robin Wong's cogent explanation of pixel shifting implementation and it's applications. Frankly, 100 mega-pixels is pretty awesome! I hope you have a fast computer to handle those giant files. Happy Sunday from California!
By the way, your B-roll drone footage is getting really good.

  • @TheOriginalAndrewLaverick

Another great video. I have used the pixel shift on my Olympus Pen F and it is great for architectural work but as soon as you need to go to longer shutter speeds it just doesn't work.I will be interested to see how technology, both in-camera and post editing catches up with this. I see it as a solution that fixed a specific problem when cameras were at the sub 20mega pixel level.

There are far to few Old Growth forest areas in general, and where I live on the Ma. - RI. border it is a 2 hour drive to the nearest location. Even at that, we don't have the very large species as found on in other climates. Luck has it that most of them are along the Appalachian trail and therefore relatively safe and accessible. The saying goes that you don't miss what you don't have.... So, Fuji also understands.

A fitting tool for a master craftsman. I thought you may be pulling the trigger on the 100MPs. Now Santa...

Hello Mr Gibbs. I was thinking on making a small project of a park in central Saanich were there are large trees and typical west coast lighting conditions. It needs to be in winter to capture the best of the moss growing on trees. My question to you is, do you worry about the quality of light or is it more of a quantity of light a bigger concern when shooting under a dense tree canopy? How do you avoid the picture turning flat colours when shooting under winter light conditions?

The burl: I often thought whether I can improve an image in the wood by adding artificial light. I rarely tried it and in most cases it did not work out well. But at the burl I think a deep parabolic softbox would work. Maybe just a 2m collapsable reflector on the ground in front of the tree would do the job.

This old growth removal reminds me of whaling. So sad and pointless. Congrats on the 100. Did you also pick up the 45-100? And now if course you need the tilt adapter for the eye piece. GAS ! Also a new gfx 100s is coming in 2021. It's a bit smaller so you'll probably want to pick that up too. 😁
