    A brilliant analysis, the best I have heard for I while. I am an Australian living in London. I have been involved with the Support Ukraine movement here since the beginning of the full invasion. Support Ukraine, together with other groups, have been gathering outside 10 Downing Street three times a week for the last 2 and a half years. I also have been attending and feel honoured to spend time with the Ukrainians and their supporters. Many are women and children sheltering here. All of them are deeply personal affected and live with the constant stress about hearing the worst possible news about their loved ones and friends.
    During the now hundreds on rallies I have only seen one member of parliament, a Liberal Democrat attend to give some moral support and to explain their parties policies. I find this remarkable considering so many members must have wizzed passed these rallies on the way to their offices so often. It seems to me, and I believe to many Ukrainians here, that apart from making broad press statements of support and reluctantly suppling outdated arms, that they don’t care about Ukraine at all. That they have no thoughts about what the future holds for Europe if Ukraine falls because since Brexit England has become a smaller inward looking island that is unable to cope with anything beyond its endless domestic problems.

      Like they said, it's a little more complex than that because there is a far right base that stands firmly behind Trump and because of his and other Trump party politicians' rhetoric they don't want to support Ukraine.
      That's why the leader of the House Mike Johnson held up aid to Ukraine for nine months. It was only because of Trump telling him and the party that isolationism is all that matters.

    Great program and video's Jonathan! I have followed this war from the start and followed geopolitics since the 1970s. I am subscribed, and although I have only commented a few times, today's title caught my attention. I have imagined a Russian defeat since Mar 6/22, where I commented on-line that Russia would lose the war in Ukraine. My reason is the inability of Russia to take Kiev in the first two weeks of its invasion and the fight in the underdogs, the Ukrainian army. They did not give up because they were outnumbered, they did not give it because they had no outside support and they did not give up because they were up against the second most powerful army in the world. I have followed or read of many wars in the past. In almost every case where a country was attacked by a more powerful aggressor, the underdogs, who were fighting for the lives of their families and country, they ultimately won! The drive to defend was so much greater than the aggressor fighting in a foreign country that one defender had the fighting spirit of numerous invaders. Therefore, it is not hard for me to imagine a Russian defeat. I had this notion at the beginning of this war that Ukraine would prevail! History does not lie. It shows us the path to the future if we are able to see it!

    • @jimroberts4828
      @jimroberts4828 Před 15 dny

      @Biostalker420 Thanks, I appreciate your point .. but that was not the point I was making. Whether Russia wanted to take Kiev or not was immaterial to my my point of view. The fact is Russia attacked the smaller country Ukraine. Most of the geopolitical analysts counted Ukraine out and their defeat inevitable. I based the outcome on historical recurrence. History has proven a hindred score that the underdog will usually win when their homeland is invaded.

    The nuclear doctrine of Russia doesn't state nuclear weapons will be used if Russian territory is breached. It says that nuclear weapons could be used in response to the use of nuclear and other types of weapons of mass destruction against Russia or its allies, and also in case of aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons when the very existence of the state is threatened. Incursion in Kursk oblast doesn't quite qualify as existential threat. That said, the doctrine is vague and leaves room for interpretation, most likely on purpose.

      You can blame Obama for that. He did nothing aobut ruZZia's invasion of Ukraine and famously once told Putin "I can be more flexible." Putin can smell weakness in any human and Obama had no stomach or experience of dealing with thugs like Putin. Obama was also partly responsible for the rise of Isis during his watch. He pulled the last US troops out of Iraq at that time leaving a power vaccum which Isis conveniently filled. It was only when the Yazidis were being mass raped and murdered by Isis monsters that Obama was forced to provide help along with the Kurds, but after countless Iraqis were killed. Absolutely useless at foreign policiy and military matters.

      Whilst that is all but unarguably true there is no reward or gain looking back. The same should/could be said about Feb 2022 - again no point looking back what there is some reward in doing is learning from those two lessons and ensuring we do not miss the boat of Russian authoritarian defeat for the long term and how the world may emerge as a result of the actions/inactions of the western talking houses where everybody wants to wear their slippers rather than the combat boots required to heal the future.

    If I may; one thing I have not heard is this, the Ukrainian soldiers are treating the invaded people in Kurt humanely. They give them food and water when the Russian soldiers abandoned them. Also the Russian soldiers that are now pow and eventually return home will tell the people back home that they were treated well, fed well and not tortured when their own leaders let them starve and even shot them if they trued to retreat. That will affect them. Word of mouth travels fast. It might turn some.

Demographically russia's population is declining, their economy is teetering on the edge of collapse, their exports to the west are drying up and their industry has a massive shortage of workers and investment. Along with sanctions and the brain drain of skilled citizens leaving, I think russia could collapse regardless of what the west does or what happens in Ukraine.
