I know I am probably in a tiny minority, but this course in my opinion is tricked up and over-rated. The greens fee is $595, not including caddy. I've played for over 60 years, watch golf on TV avidly, respect the traditions and rules, fix every pitch mark I see, but I could never afford that kind of fee. It belongs in the realm of the rich. You also have to stay at the resort, so add that. You can become a member for $45,000 initiation fee plus $620 a month. The wire grass and hardpan along the fairways looks awful and seems contrived. Was that really the natural landscape out of which Donald Ross formed the course? British links courses retain rough natural landscapes with punitive gorse and uneven fairways, but they look natural, not contrived. The "turtleback" greens, while they may have been the type at Royal Dornoch in Scotland where Ross worked as a greenskeeper, might present an interesting obstacle if the greens were kept a bit slower and greener, as I think they are in Scotland, but the USGA just can't help itself in setting up open courses and has to dry them out to the point where they are turning beige on day two and are running at something like 14 on the stimpmeter. That makes them as hard to keep the ball on as if they were made of kitchen linoleum. Yes, it makes it hard to score, but doing this just to torture the pros seems overdone and contrived and thus not very interesting. At 7550, the course is not excessively long for today's pros, and one or two very long par 4s can be interesting, but they definitely have to be offset by several shorter holes that are not driveable, require two shots and will reward the shorter pros who are dead straight or can work the ball both ways.

Very valid point of view, however it did produce an incredibly exciting finish with two of the top players in the game battling it out down the stretch. I certainly would not want to see it every week and the point regarding green fees is spot on too - costs are increasing across the globe and affordable too courses should be encouraged. Perhaps some of the money at the top of the game should be spent elsewhere!

@@Precision_Golfwant to see a course of the kind I like? Take a look at the most recent post by Andy in The Average Golfer. Think it is Lanark in Scotland between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
