    I work at an electronics store. We had the new Samsung QD OLED TV out as a demo and we noticed after a couple months of daily usage that the brightness dropped significantly. I knew that OLED TV’s get less and less bright after using them for some time but I didn’t expect it to be so fast. So please do a test on it to see after how many ‘watch-hours’ the brightness goes down to 80% of its original peak and after how many hours 70% etc

    Pro tip for ultrawide enthusiasts, watching 16:9 content kinda gives a reverse burn-in effect where the screen will evenly wear out in the center 16:9 area but NOT the sides with the black content-less pillarboxes which is really noticable on lower brightness levels...

      But that can be fixed by a long panel refresh afaik.
      Also it's not so bad if you reduce screen brightness in 16:9 as the monitor will otherwise boost it higher than normally in 21:9.
      But the main takeaway from this still stands: In the long term you'll degrade the whole panel as much as your worst pixel.

    I honestly think that for displays, not for every video, but for displays in particular you should put out an HDR video. So many screens are boasting HDR as a feature and most content consumption screens are HDR enabled, that it makes sense that you should put out an HDR video for monitor and TV reviews as it really helps with understanding what the panel is bringing to the table.

    • @caodesignworks2407
      @caodesignworks2407 Před 6 měsíci +17

      I don't necessarily disagree with you, but there's a lot of competing HDR specifications and not all monitors come close to meeting those requirements. And CZcams's compression also dings the quality, so while I think it might be worth it, it also might give false impressions to people who don't understand that even with HDR enabled, it's just not likely going to look the same

    • @mizinoinovermyhead.7523
      @mizinoinovermyhead.7523 Před 6 měsíci +11

      @@caodesignworks2407 all of those are fair criticisms, however SDR is further away from what the monitor looks like, CZcams supports multiple output hdr formats. And a small explanation at the front would go a long way to compensating for the differences. Mastering in an appropriate HDR format for the display would also help. Remember most are viewing on their phones and thus are getting reasonably comparable experiences that can be predicted for.

    A bit of a note for QD OLED, on bright room, the black level increases significantly, to the point you're like looking at a LCD panel rather than OLED. Why? Because either the QD tech or the coating on the panel. Some say that since the QD part got stimulated by ambient light, they reflected that light back, and some other say it's the panel coating that sucks. Well, point is, before buying one, make sure you are willing to use this in a dark room for maximum experience on the thing. If you can't, maybe because your SO give you a no-no, then just buy a normal WOLED panel.

    I'm very disappointed that the anti-glare coating flaw is not mentioned. The biggest issue of QD-OLED is the need for the special anti-glare coating that completely destroys near-black content when there is any other sources of light in the room, negating most of the near-black benefit of OLED. Regardless of how good or accurate the monitor is, it simply looks horrendous for any darker content if you're using it in a room with any other light source. You can see this very obviously as the pinkish hue on the monitors at 1:07 in the video. How can we trust your reporting if a flaw as big as this is entirely neglected in your review?

It seems like a significant disadvantage that they're such a big name in the OLED scene, and yet they don't use this technology. They have various competitor type processes for their non-OLED TVs, like their miniLED line. Incidentally, I wonder if microLED will ever take off in the consumer space? They're still working on it, it seems, but it seems pretty slow going for the technology to reach the consumer space at tolerable prices and a large range of physical dimensions.

I absolutely LOVE this monitor, and typically run the Pixel Refresh function 2-3 times a day (usually if I'm going to the bathroom, heading off to the gym, or some activity where I'm away from the desk for a bit) and then just run the Panel Refresh overnight for the 8 hours. Probably over-zealous, but honestly, even this over-zealousness doesn't feel like it inhibits my usage and enjoyment of the display.
    To see displays that are even BETTER about burn in and make such over-zealousness even less warranted is super exciting. Certainly not upgrading given how new this is, but I'm definitely excited to see where these panels will be when this one (or my 2nd LCD monitor more likely) gives out and needs replacing.
    If you don't have the $$$ to splurge on the brand new ones, I can easily say the AW3423DW or other last gen QD-OLEDs are still worth it, hands down the most beautiful display I've ever used.

Proper cooling lags behind everything. I'd like to see you explain why something is always way advanced and some techs are always playing catchup.

    I have been using an LG 27" OLED and though I'm sure these new QD-OLEDS are the next big thing, there's many other options worth looking at, needless to say I don't see myself ever buying another IPS monitor ever again. OLED is just way too good and is starting to come down in price thanks to companies like HKC.

      I said the same thing with my dwf 34". It pisses some people saying I will never go back and tell me to enjoy the burn in. Well my dwf oled has been on over 8 hours a day since jan 2023 and for work which is mostly a bright white screen and then gaming on top of it everyday not a single amount of burn in. I don't even do the pixel refresh every 4 hours as recommended. I just don't care to stop what i'm doing to do it. It's been an amazing monitor. I've even removed the flat matt film on it to have it all 100% glossy and its just to so amazing to look at. Colors pop like i've never experience before in a monitor. I have videos of my 34dwf and lg 34gn850 and it triggered so many people saying I did some tricks and things to make the lg look so bad. Nope that's your typical back light bleed on a lcd. Hated my 34gn850 with a passion. I will never go back to lcd at this point even with mini led tech getting better. Oled just cant be beat. I'm a huge fan of oled. I just want a 38" oled with 3840x1600 resolution. If those are made i'll replace my dfw in a heartbeat. But until then I have no reason or desire to replace my 34dfw.

    • @lambyi
      @lambyi Před 6 měsíci +2

      @SVT_LIGHTNING Yeah the reason I went with the LG over the ASUS model of the same panel was because of the retroactive warranty LG issued last year. Which protects it against burn in and other issues for 2 years. I'm as stress free as could be while enjoying some of the best picture quality I have ever seen on a gaming display. If it needs replacing in 3 years time I'm willing to spend the money again no questions asked, plus I'm sure by the time the warranty runs out microLED will make its way into market and that will most likely be endgame for most of us

    This is really exciting, I’m looking forward to the next generations of this technology. I’ll wait till they can get the ppi up a little higher (I prefer a 4k panel in the 27”-28” range) and to potentially let it mature a little more but what is already here looks incredibly promising

    The thing that matters most of the time is pixel response time (of course input lag matters too but i am purely taking about how fast the image is changing and because of that how clear it is on the screen input has nothing to do with it which is why i am not mentioning it), Hz's diminishing returns start really fast past a point which is slightly different for each person but there is an average spot for sure.

    I bought the G8 OLED last summer. Display freezes PC on wakeup from sleep in dual monitor config. Pixelrefresh are not reliable and the remote is not programable for custom quick actions. There has not been a single software update available to download even though they seem to exist (according to forum posts about these problems) Even if QD OLED looks and feels amazing I still feel scammed because thats not what a +1.000€ display should deliver. New panel looks amazing but will look out for what LG has to offer for my next upgrade.

    • @piti93
      @piti93 Před 6 měsíci

      @@Sevinki that is more than true. Lets just say Samsung is incapable of making their own panels work like they should... fyi after like 6-7 months of moderately heavy usage theres no permanent burn in noticeable on content. That being said if you consume a lot of youtube you will see pixel retention(?) on the left and right side of the monitor fairly quickly because not every video is enjoyable to watch zoomed in (via Zoom to fill extension on chrome - highly recommend btw). Those retentions are fixed via the pixel refresh but seem to be coming back faster every reset. Which again makes sense its an OLED after all. This specifically would not be as big of a problem on a 31.5/32 inch

  • @LiveType

    As long as you keep the oled's cool they last the expected 50k hours with no real issues. I run mine in sdr mode at 80 nits (it's pretty dark in my room). It's been 3 years (I'd guess maybe 15k hours) and taking a photo of the same scene shows no difference. Main issue is when everytime I go back to the measly 850:1 contrast of an lg nano ips panel it's really disorienting. You get used to it quick though.
    If you keep the brightness cranked which really drives up heat, I'd be shocked if you could even hit 5k hours without noticeable degradation.

    curved displays for me at 27" plus is kind of necessary especially if you're sitting relatively close to the screen, the curve just makes it so that the farthest edges of the screen are brought closer to your eyes. Going back to a flat 27" panel can feel like the centre of the screen is bulging at you, with the edges folding away from your eyes. This isn't a huge deal, but it is nice to have. it matters less cause the distance from your eyes from a 21 or 24 inch isn't going to be that much farther, but for a display on your desk, it makes a bigger difference the larger the display is. Considering that then, this is much more important for superultrawide displays, since the distance of the center of the screen is going to be so much closer to your eyes than the edges
