I took a music appreciation class at Pensacola state college a few years back- the professor posted this link as the example for this piece. Still come back regularly because it’s the most beautiful rendition of any song I’ve heard in my entire life.
Likewise! I am glad to have found a wealth of songs from my music appreciation course. Thanks to it, I found this piece and quite a few other songs from Dichterliebe. This is my favorite performance of the song as well.

What a wonderful song to listen to in May
My impression is one of a perpetual suspense and stasis; indeed, we begin and end with unresolved dominant chords. This is reflected well in the words, which depicts a longing and a love. To me it seems to say, "how could such a love be truly fulfilled?". It is therefore the love of a romantic ideal, as longed for as it is inaccessible.
