    A.I.D.S. at 40 Years (1981-2021) The Making of one Activist/Organizer: Valerie Reyes-Jimenez
    About this event
Valerie Reyes-Jimenez tells her story of growing up on the Lower East Side, and her Nuyorican journey to P.R. and back in the 1980's; her fight as a woman just to get an HIV test, her life in activism and organizing, and her survivor's wisdom on the current pandemic.
Audience hears stories and lessons of survival and remembrance of those we’ve lost. Audience members were invited to write the name of a loved one on paper and hold it up to the camera.
Valerie Reyes-Jimenez is an AIDS activist, long-term HIV survivor, and organizer; Associate for New York City Community Mobilization at Housing Works. She is a 2021 Marshall England Memorial Public Health Awardee. Valerie was NYC Coordinator of “C2EA” Campaign to End AIDS, a caravan of A.I.D.S activists who marched from the Lincoln Tunnel in New York City to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., and did street actions along the way over 21 days. Valerie was born and raised on the Lower East Side, and is a formidable Nuyorican mother and grandmother-abuela of an unabashedly bold and beautiful 18 year old grand-girl who is the love of her life. Valerie surmises she seroconverted in 1981 at age 16. She learned she was HIV positive February 1989 along with her late first husband, Papo--Jose Vicente Jimenez, who died of AIDS 9/9/1992.
