- Most people think 64mm jets are dinky and boring. This is anything but, especially set up the way ours is. Make it wild: move that battery back and use full throws. Make it more scale-like - move the battery further forward and be less aggressive on the sticks. Either way, have fun - because this jet is a ton of fun.

Love how you went crazy full bore after you removed the gear! Those front flips made the jet almost look like a 3D plane! The trees definitely add to the excitement. Was on the edge of my seat watching those manoeuvres. Sick video Jon! And kudos to wifey filming and keeping up with the jet with you flying crazy.

I bought this on your recommendation, no gyro, no wheels, rear c of g, maxed out elevator & omg! I was expecting good but it’s such great fun, even the sound is fantastic. Low high alpha across the strip and as i go past myself turn away and nail the throttle & it howls beautifully. Love it. It hand launches hands free so ditch those wheels.
Happy to hear that! It definitely benefits from a gyro the further back you move the CG - but if you're enjoying it without one, keep at it!

I really know nothing about rc planes but I've become obsessed. I really want to get in to it. I've looked at a bunch of little beginner planes to get and they are on my christmas list 😊 I'm a long way off from flying any EDF jets but that's what I'm striving for. I dove headfirst into this hobby because of you, starting with the F-35, setting it up and rewiring it just like you did. Sure, I crashed when I attempted some wild maneuvers, but I've rebuilt the jet, and now I can't get enough of flying. What isn't often mentioned is the challenge of using OpenTX (TX16s) compared to Spektrum. I've toughened up by teaching myself, and it's been intense. I thoroughly enjoy mixing, linking throttle gains and gear. It's tough to match what you do. But after nearly a month in this hobby, I feel like I'm hooked for life. I was considering the Freewing F-16 to complement my F-35, but the lighting on this one might just tip the scales. However, I'm not a fan of the vertical stabilizer's construction.

That said, the vstab on this jet isn't ideal, but most jets at this size require you to glue in the stabilizer. Not a fan of it, but physical realities of scale model construction will always take precedence over what we personally prefer.

Super video and review! I already ordered mine last week also in this sheme to be more colorfull. I also don´t like that plain white foam. It looks too cheap, so I was about to get the gray one. But the eagle on the bottom looks nice. Super cool watching the differences between with and w/o landing gear. As we have grass I´ll go without. It will be my F-16 training model so I think I´ll get the ventral fins off also. Is that OK? I would have flown without gyro but I´ll better put one reflex V3 I have sitting for weeks better. Or an AR631 that I would need to configure and I haven´t done that yet. Super and thanks!!
We landed it several times with gear removed, definitely had no issues with the ventral fins - just don't slam it into the ground and it should be totally OK! The AR631 is a better choice. Hop on Discord with us via bit.ly/TBRCDiscord and ask for help with setting it up in #tech-and-setup!

Great video of a lovely little jet! Thanks for the brilliant review! I'm wondering about how long the flight time with a standard 4s 2200mAh pack would be. If I understood it correctly you used a 2400mAh HV pack and got up to 5:41 minutes out of it, which is incredible! I'm tempted to get a gray one 😅
Unfortunately HV packs are quite tricky to get over here.

You should review the free wing L-15/J-10 64mm 6s, I own one and it is my favorite model near 1:1 twr and can do a lot of stunts it is a great jet, I would love to see a review over it from you.
When we've got money to spend on it, sure, that'll be something to consider!
Hi John! Two questions. First is this as easy as rafale 64mm to high alpha? Also for longer weedy grass is there more to dig in/damage on belly landings?
Yes, and the nose cone and wingtip rails will be the most likely damage scenarios if you're trying to land with wheels on grass.
I have been flying the arrows 50mm bae hawk jet, and practicing jets on the simulator. Im torn between the fms 70mm viper/ fms 64mm f-16 and the fms 80mm BAE hawk? Any thoughts for best fun and ease of flight? Cheers John.

It's possible, but we don't use Reflex - can't help ya there.
Do you think you can fit the 64mm Free 6s setup in this F-16? W/ a 1800 6s battery.
No idea, but probably. Though that would come at the consequence of nose heaviness and added wing loading. Not really our style, but most likely something you could do.

It's basically the same jet sans retractable gear and 4s compatibility.

With wheels, probably, unless it's very manicured grass. Did you miss the grass belly landing?

Gotta go by the metrics, not personal feelings about how loud something is. The Landing Gear chapter explains why it got the score it did.

I think I'm going to get one and toss my freewing 6s setup in it.
Be wary of 6 cell setups on jets designed for 4 cell weight - it won't be as forgiving in stalls, and it'll get into stalls at higher airspeeds than a 4 cell setup will. You'll certainly get more thrust, but it comes at the cost of aerodynamic performance.
What wheels do you suggest for this to be perfect ?

I don't mind unpainted foam. Paint is HEAVY...and every gram matters with RC Jets. Would you cut your battery size in half for white paint? I would NOT.
Paint isn't so heavy that a battery reduction would be needed.

Why are you flying with a gyro, good airplanes and experts don't need a gyro 😂

A gyro will have someone like me who's been in the hobby for less than a month do things that you would maybe end up crashing doing with the aft CG. I don't have a reputation to maintain here, so I'm going to tell it like it is. Nobody cares if Mr Old and Crusty (YOU) flies with or without a gyro. You asked for the smoke bro, I mean Old and Crusty.
Ok, sure I understand. I know why the gyro manufacturers offer this. The point is that any test of a model with a gyro is strongly influenced by the actual gyro and is not completely objective. What the model itself really is. The test tells mainly about the quality and settings of the gyro.
Jon I now fly on my own because most of 'The flying clubs here in the uk have at least one old crusty that ruins the fun and gyro technology.
Re-watching this vid 10 times a day for the past two weeks. In Top Gun 2 Phoenix said it's not the plane it's the pilot. In this vid it is the plane AND the pilot. I have searched all over you-tube and NEVER found more aggressive high speed maneuvering than in this vid.
