  • A very simple platform that allows for easy aiming of a camera or phone, based on the idea of a ball and socket joint.

Genius. Not even a minute into the video and I i threw my phone into a roll of packing tape and put it on my coffee mug and had a tripod in seconds without leaving my desk. The offset camera clears the side of the roll and my galaxy s20+ happens to require the tape roll to be squeezed oblong everzso slightly, which holds it snug.

An alternative: use a small bean bag. At any angle you like, portable, and fits in a pocket. To make a bean bag type bag, use a small fabric pencil case, filled with buckwheat hulls, or grains of sand if you like, or whatever doesnt degrade.

There's a commercial version called The Pod that I've been using for years with small cameras. Their best feature is perhaps that you can use them on any uneven surface as the bottom of the bean bag just conforms to the surface.

I do professional video and streaming and you've essentially built the same system that big tripod systems use. Most of the higher end/video tripods use a 70mm bowl mount to connect the tripod head to the legs, the bowl lets you perfectly level the tripod head even if the legs are uneven.
Watching you build this for a completely different group of camera users was really neat

One way to improve the de-kinking of the bandsaw blade would be to make a winding path through 3 or 4 skate bearings aligned so that there isn't a straight path through them. Though you might do that in a clamping fixture so that the path is 'straight' as you are setting up, then squeeze the blade while running to run through them. They use a similar technique to straighten wire coming off of various spools. Now I get to re-watch the entire video to see what I missed while drafting this. 🙂
The trick to 'remembering' that you have one of these, is to spend a few dozen photo-shoots deliberately using them, and having one or more stored wherever you keep your camera. I can see making some that end up as camera fixtures, if you add a bolt through the center, with a conical cutout from the bolt holding point, and then a large 'nut' gear (either with an actual nut, or with a T-nut for more depth of threads if that is 'useful) at the base that tensions the base at whatever angle you set. This would need clearance for the bolt head, and you would probably need a spherical adapter for the bolt head, but might help in situations where a camera may get jostled and you want some level of repeatability, without making the setup 'permanent.

You could really overengineer it by having magnets around the rim and have the platform be ferromagnetic. Like inlaying a strip of steel in the spherical part of the platform. Can also have a magnet that screws onto the camera and a piece of steel in the platform. Though, you're still limited by the height that it sits on. One of the few applications where 3D printing would have some real benefits -- given the choice, of course.

but I was able to iterate my design MUCH faster by cutting pieces of wood

The pegs should be done like bench dogs, multiple holes and friction fit.
The base or the plate should be coated with something that has a little grip. Strips of rubber, rubber cement, or maybe varnish?

I just follow to see what new things he can do with bamboo skewers, his new favorite wood product. 😅😅

A question: when you were cutting in the band saw, wouldn't it be safe if you were cutting on the other side of the blade when you tilted the base? That way the bottom of the piece is supported and it won't be able to turn when being cut. Instead of using the contraption you used.

that would be much safer, but I can't see through from the bottom of the table. Following the line precisely is kind of important
