  • There are many ways to make Chicken Scratch. Traditionally, they are a 3-Grain mix should you buy a pre-mixed bag. I am going with a homemade "5 Grain Mix" this time round. You can add corn, oats, wheat, milo, barley, sunflower seeds, peas and so much more! Lots of choices. I am also adding my own supplements, too. It makes a great treat for all of your sweethearts! Enjoy and thanks for watching!

    My grandmother grew sunflowers for her chickens. She cut them off when the heads drooped, stored them hanging in the barn.

    Mine are specially picky. They don't eat pearl millets which is widely used as chicken feed here. My hens demand something new every day. They will never eat same grain again on second day unless its cracked corn.

    Just remember, there is another white DE, for pools, this is NOT the same, make sure it says food grade on it. Your chickens eat good, :)

    I have peacocks, chickens, guinea, and quail, who all walk away from corn and milo. I am going to have to start making my own scratch. I prefer corn free anyway due to corn intolerances/allergies that I and customers have. Thanks for the ideas.

Mine are all health and doing well. Thank you so much

    Hi Patara, have you looked into using field peas in your scratch mix? If they're readily available in your area they have a much higher protein profile than your average grains, upwards of 20% I believe.... I'm not sure if it would be cost effective for your situation, but I thought I would share! 😄. Love your videos by the way!

    My buddy fed his chickens bird seed mix. The white bag "Bird Seed" at tractor supply has tons of red millet in it. They love it. He had eggs year round and very satisfied chickens. Chicken will not eat oats in the rough.

      +ric woodie Yes they do... but when you have 140+ chickens... how much $$$ would I be investing in order to have that and how long would that last? Also... I have to travel 30 miles to get them. I love them. The birds love them but it's a delicacy here for the cost until I grow my own. Thanks for watching~ ;-)

      @tabithawallen7716 Před 8 lety +1

      +Appalachia's Homestead we have to travel 30 miles for our mealworms too! We only have 25 chickens so at the moment, its not costing us much but we have 50 eggs in incubators and if we have as good of an outcome as we did last year, will increase our flock by 45. Would this scratch also work for turkeys?

    I stopped feeding cracked corn years ago. I lived along a creek and the damp air would make it turn moldy pretty fast. Not good. My chickens, even the banties will eat it whole. They may not want to eat it as much in the summer.

    Food grade DE says on the label to avoid breathing it in. I see people using it in their chickens dust bath and always wonder if that can be harmful for them to breathe. Have you had any issues like that?
