- There are many ways to make Chicken Scratch. Traditionally, they are a 3-Grain mix should you buy a pre-mixed bag. I am going with a homemade "5 Grain Mix" this time round. You can add corn, oats, wheat, milo, barley, sunflower seeds, peas and so much more! Lots of choices. I am also adding my own supplements, too. It makes a great treat for all of your sweethearts! Enjoy and thanks for watching!

Looks phenomenal! Honestly, you could package and sell your homemade scratch and I bet you a lot of people would pay!
My grandmother grew sunflowers for her chickens. She cut them off when the heads drooped, stored them hanging in the barn.
I love the end, "hey, you're not a chicken!" cracked me up! 💜 you!
Mine are specially picky. They don't eat pearl millets which is widely used as chicken feed here. My hens demand something new every day. They will never eat same grain again on second day unless its cracked corn.
Loved the video. Sounds like a perfect blend for the wide range of chickens you have on your homestead. DE don't you just love that stuff? Very good advice. Thanks
Just remember, there is another white DE, for pools, this is NOT the same, make sure it says food grade on it. Your chickens eat good, :)
She does say get food grade. Nice reminder.
Love it. Keep up the great vids.
That looks amazing....I need to make a mix of that.
Wow I don’t have chickens yet….. but I am going to make a mix … plan future!!! Thank you!!!
Very helpful. Thank you.
I have peacocks, chickens, guinea, and quail, who all walk away from corn and milo. I am going to have to start making my own scratch. I prefer corn free anyway due to corn intolerances/allergies that I and customers have. Thanks for the ideas.
mine wont eat oata unless its flat oats. i didn't know you could use powered garlic. thanks for info you are awesome
I just mixed our own scratch up this weekend. Inspired by you! Thank you for being such a wealth of knowledge!!
I have also read that fresh or dried herbs are great to mix in.
+jvandall21 Yes. Wonderful. Thank you!
If the herbs are fresh don't mix into the entire tote. Only add them at the time of feeding 😉😊
I wish there was a way to grow it outside year round, having it all late summer is great though
First, I love your channel, thank you for the informative videos! When you say you give one scoop in the morning and one in the evening, how much is one scoop? I have 10 chickens and wondering if I should give more/less.
Excellent!
Thank you for the videos! I have been watching your channel for years now and finally got my 1st chickens this month and I LOVE them . I have been reading on a few chicken conditions one called sour crop and one called brumble foot it scares the hell out of me. Do you know how to prevent this I would love your input? Mine are all health and doing well. Thank you so much
Hi Patara, have you looked into using field peas in your scratch mix? If they're readily available in your area they have a much higher protein profile than your average grains, upwards of 20% I believe.... I'm not sure if it would be cost effective for your situation, but I thought I would share! 😄. Love your videos by the way!
+Melissa Wilson Yes! I am going to look into that and I am purposely growing peas again this year just for this if possible! Thanks so much! xo
Great video. Thanks! Do you worry about using food grade storage bins for storage of chicken feed and scratch or will any cheap rubber/plastic tote work?
Looks like a great mix. and costs less than the pre-made brand.
How much DE do you put in to how much feed? I'm using five gallon buckets when I mix feed. Would a cup of DE be too much or not enough?
it should be about 2% of their feed
My buddy fed his chickens bird seed mix. The white bag "Bird Seed" at tractor supply has tons of red millet in it. They love it. He had eggs year round and very satisfied chickens. Chicken will not eat oats in the rough.
We're wanting to homestead soon I hope. I've learned a lot from your channel. thank you. my question is what do you feed the chickens for their normal feed?
+annette rumley Yes... you must. 16% feed. This is only a treat.
Great video what is you standard feed then
Ty
So what is your standard feed? Layer mash is what we are using
Where do you buy most of your grains?
Bet it smells good too!
+Beth Grant-DeRoos xoxo
Cows love grains too or atleast my buffaloes do.
Does this work as a hen crumbles too , or is it basically scratch?
Very vague info. What is the mix ratio?
👍
do we need to grind all these raw materials or just give them wholly and raw.
Throw it on out there. ;-)
I'm not a chicken either but I'd gobble it up if you threw some of that my way!
Hi, can I used dehydrated corn?
What size are all the bags of grain you are using and where did you buy it all?
+Kimberly Van Houten 50 lbs and at my co-op.
I notice you never mention dried mealworms. They are 50% protein and chickens love them.
+ric woodie Yes they do... but when you have 140+ chickens... how much $$$ would I be investing in order to have that and how long would that last? Also... I have to travel 30 miles to get them. I love them. The birds love them but it's a delicacy here for the cost until I grow my own. Thanks for watching~ ;-)
+Appalachia's Homestead You are correct. They would be a little pricey to feed to 100 chickens. I do love your videos. They are awesome.
+Appalachia's Homestead we have to travel 30 miles for our mealworms too! We only have 25 chickens so at the moment, its not costing us much but we have 50 eggs in incubators and if we have as good of an outcome as we did last year, will increase our flock by 45. Would this scratch also work for turkeys?
where do you buy your D.E.?
Liked the video. However you never mentioned how much D.E. you put in. Would be nice to know. Thank you for the helpful info.
Oh and first! ;)
garlic? what benefit does that have for your chickens. heard that would change the taste of your eggs. please enlighten me.
Ok
My chickens don't eat the corn. What can I do?
Why the garlic powder?
If you can do peas, Can you also do things like lentils?
I can't get my chickens to eat Black oil sunflower seeds--why is this?
Lmao........on the cow!!!
What does the DE do?
Larry G i wondered about the garlic
It prevents parasites and worms
I just read that chicken scratch can be given to feed wild birds.
Gail ever since I’ve started feeding it we get so many wild birds in our backyard, we have two beautiful doves, all kinds of small birds, blue birds it’s lovely
Can you assist me with ratios of your chicken scratch?
I stopped feeding cracked corn years ago. I lived along a creek and the damp air would make it turn moldy pretty fast. Not good. My chickens, even the banties will eat it whole. They may not want to eat it as much in the summer.
Food grade DE says on the label to avoid breathing it in. I see people using it in their chickens dust bath and always wonder if that can be harmful for them to breathe. Have you had any issues like that?
Nope
@@appalachiashomesteadwithpatara Thank you.
Thank you very much. All the best in this crazy “ Alice In Wonderland “ world.
Gotta say no to the unhulled sunflower .
I stopped using cracked corn years ago. I lived along a creek and the damp air turned it moldy real fast. Not good. My chickens including the banties will eat the whole corn.
One of my biggest chicken pet peeves is when people feed chickens cracked corn!!!! IT HAS NO NUTRITIONAL VALUE!!!!!!
Autumn Mist Eventing. It keeps them warm in winter. Mine won't eat it in the summer time.
I feed whole corn. Most animals do better on whole corn than cracked corn
So true
