You are exactly right. I have been a stay at home mom for 24 years. I have been criticized and constantly hounded by my family and others, "Why don't you get a job?" I have 7 children that I have been homeschooling since 1998. We have a garden every year that I preserve the produce from. I helped take care of my Grandfather until he passed away at 93 years old. I and every other mom like me, we have a job!

And meanwhile, those ppl who say, "why don't you work?" (Saying job implies paying job, but most ppl say "work" which is *more* of an insult) WONT help with an aging family member cause "they have lives", which many times, lands granny or gpa in a home.
Thank you for doing this for your gpa!

I find it interesting that 50 years ago NOBODY would have questioned a stay at home wife as to what she did all day and that was WITHOUT the homeschooling, gardening, livestock, social media and everything else that goes along with homesteading!! Great vid!!

I come from a family that 2/3 of them are farmers. My mother and father moved to the city to get office jobs. When I go visit my relatives in Northern WI on the dairy farm, I will tell you right now -- I could not do what they do. When I am visiting, I get up with my Uncle, (4am) go milk 80 head, clean the barn once the cows are back in pasture, then it is time for breakfast. Now about 8am. Work the rest of the day in the fields or fixing equipment, then 3pm milk the cows again. My uncle worked the farm for 60 years and never had a day off or a vacation. He could be dead sick and -40 degrees, he is out milking the cows.
No mama, I cannot do what you folks do. I may have a job -- you folk "work" and there is a difference.
    God Bless you
    Wonderful message.
    Thank you

Amen sister!!! I was a homeschooling mom and a stay at home wife in the 80's and I got so sick of people with the attitude of, "Oh, so you stay at home and bake muffins all day!" So it isn't just today, women have for generations looked down their noses at stay at home moms and just like you said you must have all kinds of skills to do the myriad of skills that it takes to run a home and raises children successfully. I didn't live on a homestead but I did have the skill of stretching a dollar, I learned to can, sew, crochet, garden and teach. So I feel ya!!!!

People don't realize how hard it is just having your children home 24/7. (Having said that I would have it any other way!!!) and doing all the house work/outside work of a farm. Busy busy busy!! I loved when you said inviting them to do your job. Nailed it!! It's hard work. And my job is about to get a whole lot harder with milking. I am beyond excited!!! This job maybe hard, you may want to quite. But I've never had so much gratification in anything in my whole life. I'm so thankful the lord has called us this way. I also have watched other youtube channels where people "homestead" say how they are living off the grid & no longer want to be part of society as we know it. I then see them talking about "go fund me requests" They would like financial assistance. I find those kind of homesteaders as free loaders. I raised 5 children by myself as a RN working many many years of two jobs, extra shifts, double shifts weekend & holiday shifts & can not understand them asking for handouts. But even when some thought homeschooling was weird, I knew God had called me to it, and I'm so glad I was able to do it and homestead for so many years. My husband worked an outside job until he had to retire on disability, then we kind of shifted roles. You do what you have to do. I was the one who always got up in the middle of the night to reload the woodstove, so I was always a little sleep deprived, but I would do it all again. :)

WOW Patara! Our family had a similar experience. I wasn't a career woman, but I wasn't what I am now, either. If folks think I "don't work"--they're crazy. Our family faced a job loss in 2012 and, instead of facing it with fear and dread, we decided to face it with faith, strength, and dignity. That included cutting expenses and taking a crash course in frugality. We fell in love with our frugal lifestyle and that is what eventually led us to homesteading. It also gave me the confidence to homeschool our third child. It's a wonderful life but, yes, it can be misunderstood. I understand where you're coming from!

We moved to a rural area and now own 4.5 acres. I grew up on a farm/homestead and loved it. So now I am starting my own little homestead. Me and my husband just built a chicken coop that I love and will be getting our first chicks this coming spring. I am also going to start a garden and have done some canning already. I am also planning on getting dairy goats. It will be a lot to handle with a full time job but that's ok. There is no 'job security', no sick leave pay, no one responsible for you or family but yourself. If It's a bad growing year, you eat less. If climate change affects the ocean so the fishing is poor (currently happening) then you have no money.

Very well said, you slacker ! LOL When we first bought the farm, I worked the full time job and my wife had a little part time job. As the farm grew we had to reverse rolls. Being debt free allows you to make those adjustments. If you want to homestead step one had better be Get Out Of Debt.... Then get ready to work harder than you ever have in you life. So, grab a sweet tea, sit for a bit and watch your livestock play. What most don't understand seeing that part of farming, is you may be in the middle of a 16 hour work day, because it ALL has to be completed before you get to (Clock Out) for the day. God bless you and your family and keep telling it like it is :-)

Now, I love it. Its such a simple and precious life for my kids. Its hard work and we work to be frugal and live on 1 income, especially with chronically ill children and being a caregiver for grandparents, buts its worth it. I try to constantly add skills to our lives and find ways to save and pick up odd jobs here and there, while also running an active parent support group. I am one of your biggest fans and have the up most respect for you and your family. I was brought up with the old values that consist of respect your elders and ALWAYS say "Yes Ma'am/No Sir, Mr. & Ms., or adopt them and call them Aunt & Uncle if ain't already kin. I know how to do the basics of picking greens beans/peas, squash, okra, tomatoes (mater's in the south 😁). Know how to dig for tators but onions I have had no success.to be honest, we we're so lucky to up, I don't have any parents or family to teach me what a mother and father should have when I was growing up. To tell the truth, what I've learned has been mainly due to watching so much CZcams. Anywhere from crocheting to this yr with trying to garden the right way. Yea on one of you videos you were talking about don't jump right into buying property before doing research and to make sure that property is pretty much way big enough if you want to get into homesteading weather it being animals and gardens or just either or. We just happened to run up on our property just a county over on a long dirt road and surrounded by hunting land and live stock. We homestead our property back in this past Sept/Oct of this past year. There for we don't have to pay any more taxes. We can build anything, add on to our mobile home or even move another one without permits. We're on well water which is good but kinda not bc no matter how many filters u have; dishes, clothes, etc changes colors and pupea has that iron build. On bright side no water bill but it's only like $10 mth extra added to our power. We've been here this Jan 13, 2019 will be 4yrs and the 1st 2yrs we had an awesome garden. Our tomatoes stood over 6ft and we had black, reds, purples, etc.lets just say it was several types. There's so many questions I would love to ask. I do want to take it slow and work into at least heffer. Yes my hubby and I know fencing and clearing comes before what we decide to get. I was raised up around cows (and your gonna laugh but I'm terrified of hens/roosters. Due to getting seriously attacked from my aunt and uncle's fenced in rooster they used for the laying hens. Let's just say that rooster tasted mighty good for supper that night. Toake you feel better, we bought 17.5acrs. in an area that u have to have a home phone bc cell services are hit and miss. But I do have questions on farming with small groups of animals I and hubby had grown up with, gardening, also canning. I'm learning how to do dry canning which so far has worked out alot better than the other type of canning. Your not gonna hurt my feelings bc I'm wanting u to be honest with me or I wouldn't be asking. Oh by the way, this is Michelle. U can message me on messenger, or even email if need to be. U just let me know when u have a break. Thk u so much on keeping ur CZcams real. I'm in the middle of watching all of you videos. Luv them all.

Yep the 'what are you doing now a days' followed by the 'oh so you aren't working' after you tell them what you do ...
    I am a housewife.
I don't homestead as we live in the heart of a city but I work my little backside off (doing similar to what I have just watched you doing in the kitchen for one thing) to save us money to pay mortgage and for our multiple holidays to visit relatives who cant seem to find the money to visit us but can question my role in life.
I have already home educated two children and they are now productive members of society in different ways. I have given the country two educated young adults.
From now on I have decided, when asked if I am working, to simply say 'no I try to do as little as is humanly possible, what do you do to keep yourself busy' and let them think what ever they want.
P.S. just for the record while watching your video I am sewing which of course saves us money. ;-)
    I love this video...

I know these are older videos you made, but I just found you so I am trying to watch them all or catch because I think they are great, and when someone hits the thumbs down button I'm like what's not to like. I have learned a ton and I wish I had of started watching sooner, but I didn't know about you. I'm amazed and jealous I admit,. I think you guys are on key. I'd love to have this going on. I will say I am working my pantry though. Thanks for your videos

Good job! When my kids were young, I gardened, I milked a cow (later goats), I took care of all the livestock, I canned, dehydrated, I kept the budget, I sewed, and I homeschooled. Yet, without fail, someone would say "Oh, since you're home all day anyway, can you _____?" Or, "It must be nice not to have to work." Really?? My kids are grown now, and since my husband passed, I did have to work an outside job. That meant not being able to do so much of what I loved except have a garden, do some canning, and raise some chickens. I hope no one ever says now "Since you're retired, it must be nice to not have to work." Because I still work! The only thing bad about retirement is you never get a day off...lol

    Do you have a job!?
Patara, do you break into uncontrollable fits of laughter when someone asks you that, since you know both sides of the coin now (city life vs country life)?

OH, I soooo love this. I now listen to both you & Starry. My husband Art & I are in our early 60's and just getting started with Homesteading, yes, building a small farm from scratch. We have been at it for 1 1/2 yrs & boy, have we grown a lot. We have chickens, ducks, and are praying to have goats next yr I have learned so much from you two ladies & so much encouragement. I learn a lot that helps to keep me going, & more than that, helps me to know that, YES, I can do this. Art works, & I do most of running the farm. His job is an hr away, and he works 6 days / wk. I figure, it will take us another 1-2 yrs to get the foundation we want, and, knowing that things will always continue to change. I have never been so busy, and we are very happy with this life, even the difficulties of getting started. I love this job.

Yeah for strong mom&dads. Definitely know that you have several full time jobs with all you do.We have just a little mini-farm with chickens & a couple of goats but I do love it. I'm old enough to be your mom but in my younger years did a lot of what you are doing now(while working part time). My daughter & 2 sons have moved in with us from another state(they were city kids) & the boys are learning to care for the goats, dog, cat & chickens. So now I am their caregiver while Mom works. They just love it & We hope we can keep them interested.

I love your honesty....you definitely wear the crazy pants! I still work some days outside the house. Homeschooling my 3rd son, sports, take care of the chickens, garden, soon canning and run the house as well.
Raised a Marine who is serving now, and my 2nd son who just graduated and got a job in another state (so proud of them). My husdand and I have always said we are raising men, not boys! Doing that is 1 job in it self. As well as staying on my knees praying for my family and friend's!
So most women wear the crazy pants and hats to go along with it... Thank you for sharing your heart, sometimes a dose of reality is good for the soul. Thanks for dishing up so Humble Pie! Yummy!

Stay at home moms have the hardest jobs and the most important job there is, taking care of the home and family. I think you and your hubby are very smart the way you are set up, it is much better if someone works outside of the home. Living debt free is the way to go, people do not need all that stuff. Thanks for the videos!

I agree whole heartedly with everything you said. Within the past year, we've sold everything, paid everything off, bought some property out of town and have begun our own little homestead. I also homeschool. I can honestly say, there's nothing more satisfying to the soul than this kind of life style. When I was an accountant, working long hours and missing my kids, I felt so empty. Now our life is full and we feel like we're doing what we were put on the earth to do. My kids are doing a million times better since pulling them from public school. They're hardly ever sick, no migraines, stomach aches and bad manners...lol....we're just humble, happy and thankful. More people should do this. Our country needs to get back to basics. Maybe we wouldn't fight so much if we did. God bless you and yours! :)

I now at this time of life 57 years old chose to pray that God give them some grace as it must be so terrible to feel like they do. Then I go my merry way with God positivity. My wife and I did that 3 years ago we live on cash only. so much calmer and happy Thank you for this video!

I know exactly what you mean. You are exactly right. My husband has a great job, and let me "retire" from my corporate job, in order to run our new homestead. (That, and because he saw the Fortune 50 lifestyle was killing me...)
People ask me what I do, I tell them, and I laugh at their expressions. (You can hear them think, "That's not work!") When I run an errand outside the home, the chitchat is, "oh, are you off today?" I say, "no, I'm never off, I just had to do XX today."
I admire you so much, keep at it! Don't let the Know-Nothings get you down.
