- For decades in India, chess was Anand, and Anand chess. Not any more. Thanks, in part, to Anand himself. The five-time world champion has played a role in nurturing what he calls the ‘golden generation’ of chess in India, and is now working on spreading the game further. Semi-retired, the 53-year-old has taken up new roles, be it as part-time commentator, FIDE deputy president or mentor to the rising teens.
In an exclusive interview with THE WEEK, Anand talks about this new crop of talent, his relationship with the greats of the game, how the pandemic helped grow chess globally and how India has become a superpower in world chess. Excerpts from the interview held in Chennai on August 21, the day R. Praggnanandhaa stormed into the FIDE World Cup final.

You had an insightful man in Anand with all his humour and perspectives from years of experience, yet the questions that were asked by Riyad left a lot to be desired. I was genuinely surprised that an editor of a decently read platform would come up with such generic questions to a planned interview with India's first grandmaster who is obviously also known for his insightful remarks during interviews.

Vishy as insightful and articulate as ever! I wish some of the questions were neater though like a few Ayaz asked. It seemed like the other interviewer starts a sentence in hope they will come up with a good question till they finish the sentence. If I had a penny every time he said “you know” 😂

Good interview. Vishy was superb as always. However, can we have interviewers who are younger and more into chess? The questions could've been more insightful. There's a lot more to flesh out of that mind. Obvious questions were already flooding my mind while Vishy was answering. Alas, interviewers couldn't pick any follow-ups. Not their fault. Maybe they aren't too accustomed to Chess as with other sports.
The 1st question is enough to sum up the incompetence of entire interview by the interviewers...
Surely they underestimated, came under prepared and didn't fully comprehend the task in front of them. Though they might be good for print media i suppose!

First kohli then aswin was brought into the chess topic within 5 mins. The cricket obsession! Ratta maar diye logon ne cricketrs ka jivanee.

Interviewers are too incompetent to interview a top chess player...good for cricket but not for chess
I had great respect towards him but as usual he shows his tambi biasing. Whenever anyone brings up Arjun he cuts immediately and switches to another chennai player. there's demand for him to get Bharat ratna but he's more like TN ratna :)
Riyad was not a fit person to interview Anand. His knowledge of chess was below average so he asked inane questions. After a stage, his questions become irritating. Ayay Memon can not help bringing out comparisons from cricket to chess which are meaningless. I have watched several interviews of Anand. This is easily the worst interview by a long mile.
