Strathmore: you should make a sketchbook that has regular white pages and some toned tan and gray. like a sketchbook with an assortment of different papers...that would be the best thing ever
I learned how to draw realistically in 2003, and since then have only improved my technique, but not my foundation, because I thought I was good enough. Actually, I am only good at copying photo references with minimal interpretation or underlying understanding of *why* things look the way they do. I have never drawn from life, and rely on rulers and mechanical distances to create proportion. I'm realizing now that I don't know how to really draw, only how to imitate drawing. So, I've just bought some gray toned mixed media paper, to force myself to consider new approaches. I'm trying the approach you're showing here first, and I expect to learn a ton about drawing, even things I thought I already knew! This video is fantastic, especially the walkthrough! Even though it's old, I appreciate it!
The key to good art is learning the fundamentals of the materials one uses and be able to play with them and not withdrawal from what they can do. Then the rest then will fall into place. A great video for all learners to enjoy and be able to copy and experience the results from what they can achieve out of the end result from this video.. Thankyou for sharing.
Thankyou so much for sharing your talent with us. It is absolutely amazing to watch you bring a person to life on a piece of paper. Also, it is very helpful for you to show us how to use dark and light shadows to teach us how to make a person's face look round instead of flat. Again thankyou and have a wonderful day.
I'm new to drawing realistically (because I'm 15), but I never thought to use toned paper to enable you to use a white pencil to make nice bright highlights. Thank's so much!
very helpful for you to show us how to use dark and light shadows to teach us how to make a person's face look round instead of flat. Again thankyou and have a wonderful day. I want to recommend my favorite artists Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Frida Kahlo, Roberto Matta Gabino amaya cacho and Pablo Picasso.
Okay I am loving how this is coming about. It is so detailed, highlighted and shadowed. My question is how are you not using a blending stump/tortillions or sponges for the blending yet it looks so blended? Is it because of the way you are holding your pencil & and the motion of where the graphite goes on the paper? I ask this as I am a self-taught/educated artist without a lot of formal training. Thanks for sharing this informational & inspirational video of drawing.
Is this from a Picture or from Memory. It would really enhance the learners perception, enjoyment the relationship of the Artist with the Photograph... just a thought and suggestion...
Thanks for the suggestion! Stephen used a photo reference. We added the photo here: www.strathmoreartist.com/contests/articles/stephen-cefalo-photo-reference.html
Thank you so much for having the photo reference. I cannot tell you how important this is for beginning and intermediate artisits who use CZcams videos for an instructtional technique. Its the next thing to being there! Please encourage your artists to actively use their reference, whether live or by photo as part of their demonstration.
You can’t do this if you are copying from a photo and that photo has loads of white areas .. if you use the white pencil and mix with the graphite it looks smudged and doesn’t look right.. you can’t mix the 2 together.. how do you do this ?
We recommend getting the outlines or main structure of your portrait first, then filling any of the white areas/highlights BEFORE starting any of your graphite shading. You're correct that white pencil and graphite do not mix well, but if you plan your light areas first and then do the graphite after without going over the white pencil, you'll get the results you're looking for. Artist Justin Maas addresses this specifically in video 3 here: www.strathmoreartiststudio.com/2020-workshop-1-videos/ He uses white pencil and graphite on toned paper for portraits and shows how to use both to achieve great results.
Strathmore Artist Papers just one question tho please.. my toned paper is grey.. and maasrt seems to you a lighter toned paper.. will be hard for me if the photo is whiter all over than the paper? Because if I can’t mix the white with the graphite how can I make the drawing be whiter than the photo? Cheers
Lillymill You can start anytime... You are NEVER too old to learn. If you draw 3 drawings a day, that's about 1000 yearly. In less than 5 years you will be professional. Nobody can teach you that..... just do it.... try everything.... including yourself in the mirror..... and watch the magic.... you will be amazed... so NO MORE EXCUSES..... and start Creating.... The Creator awaits you..
TheTroubadour1 Hey, sorry I haven't responded any time sooner. I actually plucked up the courage to unpack some sketchbook+kit pack I had laying around. I was encouraged by your comment and inspired by this and similar magnificent videos. I've actually still got it. Never lost the skills just my self-confidence. Feels wonderful as ever, though... Thx for the encouragement! Much appreciated :)
+Dong Guo this is a special kind of pencil, most known like white chalk, or pastel/ tiza pencil.... u can find this pencils in art stores, but if u don' t fin it, u can use other media like, crayons, limestone...etc
I recognise faber-castel as one pencil he uses probably 2b/4b and the white is faber as i see too. He uses a pencil entirely made of graphite (you can find them at art stores) which i think is b/2b
I love this style so much ...especially the fact that its just a quick style with an amazing result
