    Quick story to pass on. Last summer, traveling from California to Tennessee. We stopped for the night in Amarillo, TX. We had full hookups and forgot to turn the LP off while the refrigerator was running on electricity. We left for dinner, leaving our 8 year old Brittany Spaniel inside. Apparently, she thought that there was something she wanted on the stove top. In the process of investigating, she turned on the gas burner. Upon our return from dinner, we opened the door to the RV and discovered it filled with LP gas. We turned off the gas and were able to retrieve the dog, opened the doors, windows, etc. We did not turn off the electricity since the 12v system would have tried to ignite the gas for the refrigerator. From now on, we remove the burner control knobs for the stove. We realize how lucky we were! Kindly share this story. This can easily happen again to someone else.

    Another thing to think about. Some people use their stove, burners to help heat the RV. My friend had a patient that was retired, living in his parked RV. She noticed he had his stove running in the winter and warned him about the danger. He had been doing this for some years and poo-pooed her concern. She went back to his place at a later date and it had burned down with him in it. The neighbor came out and told her about it and how his screams were horrible and he couldn't get into it to help him.
    He'll never forget or "unhear" it. We have a LOT of people in this county living in RV's in parks or in a relatives backyard.
    Another issue is when someone is on oxygen and they smoke while it's on, or want to cook with it on. One year there were 3 fatal explosions in 2 weeks. We've had more than a few over the years of moving RV's catching fire. Glad you're warning about moving with the propane on.. It is a coin toss on whether it's going to go off or not. Connections are not THAT secure. Hoses crack.

    Florida has addressed the seriousness of a propane leak leading to an explosion requiring all RV mechanics to be qualified by taking courses and passing proficiency tests. As a Certified RV mobile tech I am also registered and have passed the Master exam, however, not all RV techs have been qualified to service propane systems as we have many traveling techs who come here in the winter but are not tested, insured , or qualified. Always ask the rv tech your working with are they qualified to work on your propane system and have they taken a proficiency test.

    @george_KC1TQF Před 2 dny +2

    MJ, I have lived in MA my entire life and you nailed the pronunciation of Peabody.
    It is sad to see that they lost their coach just before a trip of a lifetime. That flame that shot out from the back of the RV looks a lot like a propane fireball. I would guess that they were trying to cool down the fridge before they hit the road and it would appear that the flame went out and caused a leak. Not sure how a propane fridge works but I would gather they have a thermocouple that would shut the valve off in the case of flame loss. If one of the copper lines was leaking under the RV and they had the fridge running that could be a possibility of the explosion. No matter how it happened it just shows that systems should be checked regularly and more especially before use.
    Always travel with your propane off. Anything I have with propane, a grill, camp stove, or RV the valve is always off when not in use. I don't trust the mechanical connections to never leak. I always assume that a leak is possible no matter how new or old things are. One easy way to check for leaks is with a bubble solution on every fitting in the propane system.

    I live in AZ and I have always driven with Propane on to keep the fridge cold. It is the very reason I converted to a 12V fridge this past year. Turing off the propane caused the fridge to get too hot and things would spoil. Now, with the 12V fridge, it even keeps ice cream cold and hard and no propane to worry about until I am stopped and setup.

    We need to remember..... Our RV is a earthquake driving down the road. Screws, panel's, bolts,lug nuts, and
    gas lines can work loose over time.
    There is also chances of electrical shock, water leaks, propane leaks, frame, axle, leaf spring braking. So inspect
    Your RV before and after every trip.

  • @borabora4480
    @borabora4480 Před 3 dny +5

    LP monitors are critical to install in any enclosed space. The gas stop valves are a very inexpensive safety feature to have in your RV. Shutting off gas sources in an RV are no different than in your standard home (but more critical when on the road). LPG has an odor from Ethyl Mercaptan. Many describe the smell as rotten eggs or sometimes rotten cabbage. Do not ignore such a smell. Do not have open flames next to the propane other than in the controlled setting of the stove gas orifice. Last safety sugggestion is to check all gas connections yearly. Your RV endures many bumpy roads and therefore is susceptible to connections becoming loose. This loosening of connections becomes a safety matter when the gas system is involved. Simple and inexpensive safety precautions can save lives.

    I’ve had many RVs since the 80s. The 1999 Bounder 36’ Class A had a propane detector connected to a gas solenoid. When the alarm activated, it shut off the gas flow. I’ve not had an RV with that feature since, including our 2023 Class C we now have. I only traveled with propane on when we had a travel trailer to keep the fridge cold. All my other RVs had fridges that could run on electrical power, and didn’t need the propane on while traveling.

    Great reminder to check the propane tester. I just lucked out from an accident. Somehow I hit my stove knob and it was open, I had left the propane on. A month later I was taking it for service and smelled propane. I went and checked the tank which had been full and it was now empty. I closed the valve and went to check the motorhome and found the knob on. Only thing that could have leaked it.

  • @jamestrippca
    @jamestrippca Před 2 dny +1

    To be clear just because the detector alarm makes a nose doesn’t mean the detector works. If it makes noise it means the alarm works. They only are good for a specific number of years. Don’t assume that because the alarm works the sensors are good for LP leaks!

    I am, and have always been, paranoid about propane. I would "pressure check" my system every spring. That's where you put a gauge on it and charge it with compressed air. Ya then watch the gauge for pressure dropping. If it drops, you have a leak. Connection points are the weak points. I now have an all electric RV.

Also, the Refer was only 120v or Gas, so Gas underway.) I got it new in 1972. (BTW my propane pigtails had flow limiters. You had to crack the valve to Prime the system or it would just shut off).

    That is sooo scary! If they were prepping for a trip they may have had the propane on to pre-cool the fridge . . A bad (hot or slightly exposed) wire near that tank could be an ignition source. But yes, when you see them cart the unit away the bulk of explosion damage was where the underbody propane tank was.
    In my earlier days I did run with my propane on . . Until I saw a few vids about units exploding on the road . Never again did I! Way too risky.

    My first RV I bought (I was definitely not experienced and didn't know what to check for), I bought from a local person
    They had changed the fridge from an RV fridge to a residential fridge
    Do you think they capped off the propane line that used to go to the fridge? Of course he didn't He bent the gas line and duct taped it
    Not only did I never use the propane in that trailer, I gave the 2 tanks to a friend to use so the full tanks wouldn't just be sitting there
    Luckily I did that because that winter, there was an electrical fire started from faulty wiring in the bedroom (we were not home) and it completely gutted out the entire inside

  • @truckingkaiseradventures1610

    We would never leave the propane on while driving. The fridge if it is full and cold before and you don't get into it then it will stay cold. As for a major reason we wouldn't we bought a used 1998 Mini Winnie and some of the parts in it had been sold by the sorry daughter and her boyfriend who stole from her dad in Washington state. They decided to abandon it Arkansas and when the guy who went to get it from the park discovered it ran well they took it to their business. He contacted the owner and it just wasn't worth it for him to pay to get it back across country and suggested they sell it. We went to a couple of salvage yards looking and 90% of the RVs there had been burned and it was easy to tell is was in areas where the propane would have been used.

      Same here. I tried shutting it off a couple times. In a hot summer travel day the refrigerator never catches up. We dumped everything that could spoil, and replaced.
      The key is to regularly inspect lines and make sure the propane leaks detector is good.
      In a crash the propane is the least of concerns. There isn’t much propane in the lines to begin with, and the excessive flow valve shuts down all but a trickle in the event of a leak. Plumbing for gas tanks and lines to generators are much more of an issue.

    If the tanks were overfilled, the pressure relief valve blows towards the RV. This seems to me backwards. For example, Hydrogen busses vent away from the vehicle. But the opening in the propane valve cage is for people’s hands to operate the valve. Mounting the tank valve inwards, vent outwards may make sense, but awkward

    • @ccpperrett7522
      @ccpperrett7522 Před 3 dny

      On that note of venting, what about the warm temperatures outside causing a tank to vent. We live in Alaska. A man brought his propane tank into the house during the winter. When it warmed up, the tank vented and something in the home ignited the propane. The man was severly burned. This RV explosion reminded me of that.

    Excellent video. I have a manometer for other purposes, but they are not that expensive. Whenever I do the roof inspection (twice a year) I like to spend an extra minute and leak test the propane system.

    Very few RV's have a propane detector. I'm on my 4th trailer and the newest and whilemit has a carbon monoxide detector, it does not have a propane detector.

    As inefficient as our absorption fridge is, it will still keep things chilled/frozen during a 3-4 hour trip. When we get to our destination it either gets plugged in or the propane is turned on.

    Just like you can buy a moisture detector to find leaks in and around your RV for $26, you should always have a propane wand/detector in your RV Kit...always check in and around your RV for leaks, don't leave it up to the detector, even though they are a great tool, once a year or after a LONG bouncy drive you should make sure you have no leaks...it only takes a few minutes to do. Stay safe out there.

    Thank you Izzy and MJ for telling the news and warning us against this happening. It’s sad that this had to happen. I saw an Fleetwoods Bounder for sale up at the corner for sake by my house. I don’t know safe it would to have an older Fleetwoods that’s at least 20 years or more would be. The Fleetwood we rented we didn’t use the propane at all. Just the microwave. We only brought food that needed heating up. We played it safe. If wanted to cook out we wouldn’t have used the campgrounds grill or our own we brought. But we were fine. Glad the family survived but sorry they got burns. Very sad. Thank you Izzy and MJ! Hope you had a great 4th of July! 🎉🎇🇺🇸

    It was just about a month ago I watched on the news a Van camper caught on tape explode Not even flames Just pieces everywhere 10 Or 15lb propane bottle was the only source to be the cause No one was in the Van at the time thankfully.
    I say if you must have propane use smaller bottles And yes they can do damage too But might save a life. Personally i have a SUV with a bed And a coleman camping fuel single burner stove If i was to get into more than a weekend of camping / long travel I would get a induction stove A wood burning mini cub stove And a Diesel heater I'm really not a big fan of compressed gases

    Yikes! Very dangerous, I pray that all involved survive and don't have significant burns. Our previous coach had onboard propane, we always turned it off when traveling. The current Dutch Star coach is all electric, however we do carry a propane tank for a grill. It is always turned off when not in use and I check it frequently to be sure it isn't leaking. The propane industry adds a scent to the gas, which otherwise has no smell, you can usually quickly detect when there is a leak just by smelling it, but a soap bubble test around fittings is always a good idea.
    Oh, and your pronunciation of "Peabody" is spot on, MJ! Surprising for a Jersey girl!

    I have mixed opinions on GasStop valves. They will shut off a major leak like a torn hose but not a slow leak that would be your most common cause of an explosion. They are useful when all appliances are off, turn off your propane, if the gage slowly goes down you have a slow leak.

      Bear in mind all modern propane tanks already have an excessive flow limiter that all but shuts down flow when pressure is lost.

      Yes I am aware. GasStop at a rally we were at portrayed their product as a way to shut off the propane flow if propane was being used while traveling and you were in a significant accident with lines being cut.

    We had one blow here in Quartzsite/ It was a motorhome that got hot going down the road and the over pressure valve opened . They pulled into a propane selling lot and when the electric steps came down, Boom. There were many fire extinguishers about so They got the fire out. HOWEVER- when told to move to the shade, they shut the door and the steps closed and poof off again and not an extinguisher in sight.. They all got out, but the unit was lost.

    Prayers for the burn victims. A tidbit for you. Even when our propane has been cut off at the tank, our sensor has gone off. Absolutely no propane was on at all. We have been told that just because your RV is brand new does NOT mean that your sensor is brand new. They pick those things up off the shelf and install them. They may have been setting on the shelf for a year or so. Propane off while driving. We don't even stove or oven cook either. When we were cooking on it, we were going thru way too much propane. We bough an electric stove burner and air fryer oven and crock pot and steamer. We do just fine with out it. Why pay double to cook? Only use electricity. Only time we turn the propane on is when I'm taking a shower. Otherwise the electric water heater is on. During the winter in Mississippi, we didn't even run the propane heater. Didn't need it. Only had electric heaters inside and stayed nice and comfy. Now in South Dakota, we had to run all the heat we had. So, yes we did run the propane heater up there.

    Not only do we NOT drive with the propane on, we do NOT leave it on at all when connected to shore power. We Electric cook for stove top meals and for oven meals or Microwave. Our propane works great, our propane stove top and oven works great.... but for us it's simply a minor additional precautionary measure on our part. We have been RVING for over 30 years PT and our current Motorcoach has a great Generator (not propane) so we do have electricity even when we are away from any shore power.
