To all coast guards; BRAVO! You are all guardian angels. Sending you much love and light.
Most people don't realize how amazing the USCG is.

W O W....! That swimmer - loved his honesty. And bravery. And tenacity. Thank you, Sir for your exemplary service! Additionally the helo crew rockedl! You guys are 150%!
The heck with the Avengers (lol). These are true superheroes.
So Others May Live.
Panic or not, they were uncomfortable with the circumstances facing them. God bless the Coast Guard and Mario.
Good job Mario!! You are a Hero!! Thank you!!
Wow such a great feeling that must feel to save lives
To be a coast guard rescue swimmer you either have to be extremely brave or extremely crazy . . . or most likely both.
Hoo-Ya !!!!!!!
For sure, those guys put their life on the line every time they get into the water. They battled extremely rough conditions, large waves/swells, extremely cold temperatures, often during the night with people panicking around them. They are literally volunteering to put themselves into the very life & death situations that everyone else is desperate to escape from. I have the utmost respect for what they do.
Actually, you have to be extremly skilled, first and foremost.
Superhero Mario - no cape needed.
"Now my daughter has new super Mario because her other one was a Nintendo game"
Thanks guys
Mario Vittone is the man! Balls of steel!
That was an epic battle for that young Coastie!
it takes a special type of people to do that job.
Someone please help me understand how Mario massive balls fit in that Helicopter!?
Great well done
I will become a rescue swimmer
Great story
Great BOYS!Godbless!
Imagine owning a 65' sailboat and not knowing how to heave to.
Heroes all.
That was seriously stressful!!!
The best

The boat isn’t even sinking.... they just tapped out. Ridiculous
Seems to be that rescue was the best choice. The father couldn't manage anymore, after 36 hours. glad he saw this option as the right one.
I do wonder what became of the boat!!!
You never know when you will need your muscles to help with boating.
Calling for rescue in time was the smart thing to do. Going that far out in a small boat unless you are a professional mariner is of course idiotic, as is sailing when a hurricane or tropical storm is even remotely near your area. Accept that your play isn't important enough to risk you or your family or your boat. If in doubt, find another trifling hobby and leave the sea to professionals.
A professional opinion on the subject. Read the whole article:
"The owner of Marine Flower II abandoned his perfectly good sailboat in November of 1994. It is exactly what he should have done. His boat wasn’t sinking, but after two days fighting seasickness and fatigue, his wife and daughter could only lay below with his infant son. In a matter of hours, he would have to single-hand his 64-foot ketch through a hurricane. I don’t think he would have made it. If he hadn’t called for rescue when he did, the search and rescue would have likely been just a search. Stepping down into the ocean was a very good idea. If you’re thinking you would have done differently, then you are exactly the kind of boater the Coast Guard often looks for, but never finds."
Ob Fuscated it's about me. I would heave to and rest in hammock in the centre with some seasickness pill. The sea doesn't look bad to me.
Irk man that ain’t no small boat. That’s things like 35+ ft

It’s over 60’ (just watched another video on the same rescue) 300mi from shore is nothing for a boat like this. My friend has taken his 30’ sailboat down to Hawaii on multiple occasions
Im cryimggg
i agree
Was this a case where the family was incredibly uncomfortable and panicked, but might have endurted less risk by staying with the boat in a defensive position such as utilizing a sea anchor? The boat seemed to be handling the conditions well.
The husband was exhausted
Super Mario!
So others may live
What a joke that guy was completely unprepared for that boat trip
Gosh i really wanna do this but if you fail the school, you’re still in the coast guard. There’s nothing I’d rather do than be a rescue swimmer.
SAR is a terrific mission no matter which position you fill. My bro was on a 40’ cutter and saved a lot of people! Dont let any perceptions of glitz dissuade you.
Quinny sent me
I wasn't there. But it does appear a Sea Anchor could have keep the Bow into the Head Sea.! & I didn't hear if they were taking on water. but not a good place for the Family..!
First, why did they start out for a blue water sail when a hurricane is on the way?? Second, if nothing is wrong with the boat, he should have kept going, surely he could have started the engine and make it to Bermuda.
this sucks i would like to meet the boy who saved his family thats horrible
I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy for this moron who not only put his family in a perilous situation to live out some pipedream, but also risked the lives of Mario Vittone and his crew, as they were obligated to go out into that mess to rescue them.
Believe me, he beat himself up plenty for that trip. It's thinking that only "morons" are capable of error that makes a person unsafe.
Mario Vittone Perhaps moron was the wrong word, but I stand by my intent. I wouldn't take a child and infant out on onto open water just like I wouldn't take them into the Mojave Desert or the Alaskan bush or any other environment where things can turn hairy quickly. I'm just glad that the family and your crew made it back. Thanks for all you do, Mr. Vittone =)
I understand what you meant. It was not a quality decision, was it?
Mario Vittone He also made the right decision in that he left the boat before things got so bad a rescue would have been much harder. There is no telling what could have happened had they tried to weather the storm. He shouldn't have left for Bermuda when he did but he also made a realistic decision based on crew abilities & left a good boat while a rescue was still possible.
An experienced, fresh crew may very well have been fine but he didn't have that.
I think putting his family in that position in the first place was a poor decision but jumping ship when they did was a good decision.
Mario Vittone do you stay in contact with the family
Seriously, taking a baby on to a boat for a sail like that? So stupid and irresponsible.
Its called blue water sailing .They need rescuing because hes tired yeah right!!! The rescue was the most dangerous thing they did
