Another use for shower curtains. Inexpensive Way to Enclose Your Patio

- Welcome to the channel today we are going to show you how we enclose our screen porch. In the past we have used vinyl and hung it up either straight to the wood or sewing cloth on it in running a pipe through it. However the wind tears up the vinyl and it ends up tearing and falling off before the end of the season. I found some 96 inch long shower curtains. And we are going to use those and hang them from conduit. This is a cheap and hopefully a long lasting solution to enclosing our screen porch.

Florinda's Family we act had some really bad wind storms come through and because they are up on rods with curtain rings nothing tore ! Lots of flexibility is the key !! I should patten this idea lol

Ha! Awesome idea and it looks great! I have used those kind of shower curtains to put on the bed when I first get a puppy to protect the mattress 😂 but I think using it like that is a fantastic idea so much thicker than the winterizing plastic that they sell and it is shiny so it looks like glass. Nice!! Look how big the puppy is getting wow ❤️

Terrific idea!! I remember dreading the beginning of winter for my 100 yr old ranch home *Lord* it was exhausting trying to weather proof 😂 I ended up using heavy plastic & building frames for *ALL* my dang windows uggg!! 😁😊🤗🎅🤶🎄⛄🇱🇷

I just ordered some clear pvc tarps with ugly black trim and grommets online for my balcony but realized it looks like shower curtains lol. I may just have to return the tarps when they arrive. Awesome video!! Thank you so much!

Oh this is gonna be a life saver..i just got half of my wrap around porch screened in and I have 2 ( of my own ) and every other feral wild cat in the neighborhood come to my yard but my cats stay in the screen room bc they love it usually I just hang plastic for the winter to black the wind for my cats every winter and their heating pads on very cold nights..this is a good idea

This is absolutely brilliant I am going to the store in a couple of hours to get shower curtains was going to use a tarp but It would cover the sunlight I’ll use DT clips and magnets tho since I can’t climb 🤞thank you so much

Great idea, I know it is primarily for the wind, but I bet there is a significant temperature difference between the outside and screened in

I've been doing this each winter for almost 10 years. I always try to get at least 10 mil vinyl and put grommets or the thickest and heaviest shower curtain ---the wind will tear them up if they are not heavy enough.
true , that wind is fierce , so I find if you use the shower curtain hooks on a rod , its the next video I think , its not so taut in the strong winds .
I was looking for something to enclose part of the cat-run so we can still have sunlight, but block winter winds that will be coming in October. WHAT A GENIUS IDEA-THANK YOU!!!!!!!! The clear vinyl tarps are bloody expensive, or you get ‘em, and they aren’t truly clear. This is awesome-wish I’d thought of it; glad I found this channel!!!
Yes we did the clear vinyl first , very expensive and they end up tearing , these are so affordable and so far we have used the same curtains for several years ,
This is such a great idea, thanks for sharing. As I was watching a thought came to me. What if I use the shower curtains to make a DIY green house for my tomatoes. I need the structure to be water proof but allow sunlight in.

The winds where I live will never hold up against this. Have you thought of putting the grommets on clasps or nails for more security? I saw another video where they did that and used graf tape to go around the edges of the vinyl for added security. I think I'm going to incorporate their idea but I will try your method with the shower curtains rather than vinyl. At least to start. I don't know, though, if my porch posts are too far apart for me to actually cover one area seamlessly since the shower curtains are only so long. Great idea though!! Subscribing.
In a different video I show where I used heavy tape at the top holes and I found that keeping it slightly loose so it would not fight the wind helped , by using the condit pipe and the rings. its a cheap way and if it doesnt work for you it only cost minimal money , I bought the vinyl before and it really was expensive and didnt last that long , so replacing cheap shower curtains every few years is worth it to me , thanks for the sub ,
There is also two way velcro, Adhesive on each yet place the fuzzy on the inside of the shower curtain when placing on the outside leaving the pointy on the sections you choose yet being able to take down after the storm. On Ali Express, Amazon, pending right footage, and very strong. Plus clear shower curtains, maybe not as thick for other projects are 1.25 with Dollar tree and then 1.25 for the hooks, although velcro top to secure, and no need for hooks.
Great tip! but for us the wind is too strong , we chose to use curtain hooks so there would be movement to stop tearing of the plastic, but the velcro will work if you dont have strong winds for sure, thanks for stopping by and commenting

Are the hooks strictly at he top, or on the bottom to sway, and do you mean some movement and a little secure perhaps on each side only portion? or what am I missing? This would be really helpful for my plants on the deck to reduce excess rain if I can set up correctly.
The hooks are just on the top using it like you would a shower curtain in the house.
I am thinking if this work for Florida bipolar weather. 😊 Every day when is raining my furniture with a lot rain water.

depends, we have a mr buddy ( think thats what it is called , a lot of campers use them) and we have a kerosene heater ,

thanks for watching , actually just search for clear shower curtain in the size you needed in the amazon search bar. the sides of our porch was a lot longer then the front so there were two different size curtains , I cant find the exact curtains that we used.

How did u hang the curtains to w the ringz?
originally we used cheap plastic shower curtain rings , i believe the second year we just used zip ties
I would suggest 8 mil green house plastic. Have you tried that?
we tried some vinyl material from the fabric store, dont remember the weight , but after a while it rips and doesnt hold up so we moved to the cheaper shower curtains , replacing these every few years is easier on the wallet. thanks for the suggestion ,
How cold does it get where you are in the winter? We have a long winter where it can be 5-10 degrees daily for a few months. I would like to do this idea for my enclosed deck so we can sit out there in the winter. Not sure if these curtains would be thick enough to keep the cold out to the point where it is 70 degrees on my deck.
The coldest we ever get is down to 25 and that’s short spells ! However you could get thicker weighted curtains .

Oh boy I bought them from Amazon they were listed as amazerbath two pack shower curtain liners I had to order the 72x96 for the side walls , thanks for watching

Hey great video, How are you connecting and sealing everything? I see the rods on top but not sure how you're getting a good seal. Staple gun?
I used an industrial type tape to seal together.if you use staples tape it first then staple because the wind will rip it with just the staple

Great idea but i think ill do this from the inside ive been doing plastic that way but its not as clear. Can I ask why you do it on the outside? Im sure theres a good reason🤔
actually I was thinking about doing it from the inside this year. No reason we did it from the outside , thats just how I have seen others ( like local resturants and such) have theres . Let me know how it works out for you.

I can’t find the 96 inch ones there for the sides but yes that’s a great cheap option.
How has the tape held up?
the tape held up well however we got a lot of wind and the curtains started to rip here and there. but they were pretty cheap on Amazon , I really did like using the electric conduit as a curtain rod . I think what will help is if we round the corners with the curtains the wind wont grab on to it as easy . trial and error

The area around the rings will tear some so put some clear tape to reinforce them . They will last a few years before you will need to replace. But so much cheaper then the vinyl
Did it keep the porch warm?
it keeps the wind out and allows my plants to not freeze, however if we want to sit outside on a cold day we need to fire up the kerosene heater that we have.
Awesome! Just used shower some clear shower curtains to insulate my windows for winter from the inside. (Cut then to size & used nails and painters tape)
How did the shower curtains end up working for you? FYI target has them for super inexpensive. Between 3 & 6 dollars.
that is awesome , they are so much cheaper then buying plastic , and thicker. So glad you were able to use them in your windows,
a few of them got tore up with the wind , so I will have to replace them this year, thinking about running the conduit a full turn around the corners to keep the wind from getting behind the curtains, I will check out target , thanks , my biggest problem is these are super long like 98 inches i think , so many stores dont carry them , but I am going to check target anyway just to be sure.

It will hold up for a few seasons thats why its nice cause shower curtains are cheap

Here the wind would tear that apart. But if you don’t get a lot of high winds that would work great.
Mean mamas Kitchen in the past I have put heavier vinyl up and screwed it in tightly , that’s when the wind here has tore them up . I think with these being on a rod with the shower curtain hooks it will be much better , but we don’t get a crazy amount of high winds either 😀

Tape doesnt stick on our aluminium not even gorilla or duct tape not waterproof either not evdn staple gun keeps our plastic on these broken out window frames..we are due for a storm at 5pm hard rain maybe even sleet hail or snow we never know and ive got no vehicle and im due to see this storn roll in in 8 hours so i gotta get hoofin it ive got zero money for taxi fare and no busses run near here! Im screwed baically but by hook or by crook ...btw i have n hook and im no crook lol im making my way down to the dollar tree or daiso to find some shower curtains darnit! Wish me luck yall!
good luck , the tape that will work is awning repair tape however that might be expensive , we used it along the edges by the house . stay safe and warm
Gaff tape. Local hardware store should have it. May benefit you to clean it with alcohol or something similar too

It has been 4 years, how the curtains holding? I think the curtains are for indoor use and not UV protect.
As far as UV we would take them down in summer when the sun is hotter. The best thing about using shower curtains is they are cheap so we have had to replace them a few times but just because they get torn at the grommets it’s a cheap alternative to enclosing your patio. Thanks for the comment
