I was disappointed at Ryza for the first couple of hours, but then it quickly became my favorite game of the year and I put 80 hours into it. It looked and performed beautifully on PS4. Exploring was so fun. Remember, you don't have to do everything and you can skip all of the sidequests if you feel overwhelmed.

I loved Atelier Ryza 3 and Trinity Trigger. I think I'm just used to those really long dragged-out stories from other RPG series I've played. I usually play games like the Trails series, Xenoblade, and other RPGs with stories that go well into the 100-hour mark. So, I don't mind if a story drags on a bit like in Ryza 3's case. I do admit that part of the story with the two rival artisans was admittedly slow as heck. After that section the story definitely picked back up and got very interesting. Trinity Trigger too, it was surprisingly fun for a smaller game. Some of those bosses though were tough as crap.

One of my disapointments this year was Avatar, I still platinumed it but there is so much missing, it is a gathering a crafting game to get better gear, but you have VERY limited inventory space, and the stach isn't linked when you want to craft, so it was really dumb, there were so many little quality of life missing that could have made it way better!

    My dissapointment with Starfield can be summed up this way;
I never played an Elder Scrolls or Fallout game before playing Starfield. I rolled credits on Starfield and I was relieved to be finished. I never felt like it was a special game. I'm 10 hours into my first playthrough of Fallout 3, and I know I like it a lot. It only took about 2 hours with Skyrim before I decided its cool. Even their old, out-dated games are better than their new one, because they felt like they had a lot more personality.

3 is my favorite. I enjoyed the more over the top arcadey feel and after getting used to it, I actually like the skill system. I maxed out a necro but I could have just as much fun if I went back and did the other classes. Never played 1, never fully connected with 2 but I do get the hype with it, 4 I just felt nothing for at all. Looked nice, though. Still wish blizzard could course correct, but at this point that blizzard I loved is looong gone.

If I have to pick something I played, even though it's not actually from this year, probably "The Cruel King and the Great Hero." Oh sure, it's adorable from story to graphics, and the turned-based battles aren't bad, but there's so much back and forth/backtracking and it takes forever to get through areas. Pretty repetitive overall. At the same time, I also don't regret playing it.

Someday I will play that game… but not until it’s on sale for 10 bucks… as well I’m not quite feeling it and I paid full price for armored core 6… was sold on the fromsoft but I really don’t know yet. I've played a ton of JRPGs and never seen such a stupid combat design, especially annoying with how well the original design worked.

I love Ryza 3, it starts super slow unlike the first 2 and I was overwhelmed by the open world, however I power through, it does get better and the ending makes it worth it. Please go back to it.
Rune factory 3 is disappointing though, I am spoiled by RF4 quality of life so RF3 feels super clunky and cumbersome. I agree with Fairy Fencer because the character does feels different to me too. I didn't play the rest of the games in this list.
On to my recommendation. I don't play a lot of newer game this year because I broke my arm in march. I finally play trails game this year, started with trails from zero because I can play it with one hand then cold steel 1 & 2. I finally get it, it is a solid game series, will continue playing the rest. I also recently started Dragon's Dogma because I saw the Dragon Dogma 2 trailer, very solid game, superb combat system, highly recommended.

I have plenty of disappointments for this year. Starfield is on top of the list. The boredom was very very real for me! I am a patient man, but the amount of load screens was just too much. The NPC's were boring as was the story. I expected exploration in space, I did not get it. What a waste! Skyrim in space my butt!!
Diablo 4, waste of money. I really love the art style they went with here! I really enjoyed the combat. But I found everything else boring. I didn't like the looting. I felt like my characters progression was pointless. You never get that feeling of power...
I managed about 90 minutes playing redfall, then I gave up. I just didn't like playing it. It was janky. It was not compelling at all. What a shame!
FF16- I felt so depressed for the 25 hours it took me to complete it. Everything was so drab. Everyone spoke in a monotone. There was no personality. I actually liked the themes it took from dragons age & game of thrones, but they place a foot in that pool then took it out almost immediately. Shame#2! Combat was very good, icon battles were nuts! Great music also!

I loved playing Diablo 4, but it was also a big disappointment. I was expecting an improvement, but it felt like they put no time into making it. The graphics was boring and grey and the gameplay was pretty average. I really liked the cinematics, story, exploration and some of the non-essential tasks. But it was another game, not a very memorable time. But I finished it, and don't know if I'll be going back for another class..
All the other Diablo's were mind blowing and this was just a game.

Fairy Fencer f Refrain Chord is my most disappointing game of this year. It isn't bad or awful. It is actually fun but,the things I loved about the other two is the characters, the writing and the battle system. Getting rid of the English voice acting really hurt it in my opinion because I loved the voices and it really made me love the cast even more because the writing was funny and good! This one totally took a nosedive in the writing department. As far as the gameplay goes,I love strategy games too but I don't think it needed to change from the battle system they had as it was good.

As a long time Rune factory fan, I can agree with your opinion on remastered RF3 being odd and just seems weird, I will say, RF4 was actually my favorite in terms of gameplay and I didnt even make it past the second cave in RF5 because the switch makes the gameplay so limited, even the port to PC it got just still feels clunky like they added a mouse icon but its not tied to the selection so if you hover over an option it doesnt highlight or select something until you click it. Idk, RF5 system just seems so unpolished to me.
Biggest flop to me came from late last year Nov 2022 (kinda outside this years window but only one that comes to mind atm) was Harvestella, I really loved the idea of a farm sim RPG but its so lacking. No holidays, NPC interactions are super limited even after marriage, etc. I enjoyed the stories and back stories to characters, the scenery was very good from what I recollect, but the gameplay was pretty lacking, especially for a full price tag.
Nvm, I know a game that released this year that disappointed me, Fae Farm, was playing a lot of sand box and farm sims this year with friends, and this one has been on the radar for awhile, but as cute and fun as it was, it is also highly unoptimized, social interactions with NPCs is super dead, and even with the DLC, its just bad especially for another full price tag.

My most disappointing game of 2023 was Fire Emblem Engage because I felt like the developers flooded the game with too many characters. In each chapter (I played until chapter 10) you got 1-3 new characters. but most of them were at my replacement bench because there was limit of useable characters per fight. I preferred the way in Fire Emblem Three Houses where you chose a house and started with a dozen characters. There you built up a real emotional connection too your characters and slowly it was able to grow your team by recruiting characters from the other houses. In addition to this some dialogues in Engage were awkward, I mean there are always some awkward moments in Fire Emblem character conversations but Engage took it too far.
Please take into account that this is only an opinion and it also can be the wrong opinion :). In addition to this 2023 had too many good games so if a game doesn´t hook me in the first hours I also left it behind whereas in other years with less new games I would have given it a second try.
I wish a nice New Year celebration too the community!

I enjoyed Starfield at first. After playing through a few different factions and main story quests it just became clear to me it is exactly Skyrim in space and space is vast, empty and boring. I ended up feeling no desire to explore anything because there just wasnt much to find, the result is you end up fast traveling everywhere and this vast, empty galaxy to explore becomes really small. The choices you make also dont really matter all that much similar to in Skyrim except Skyrim came out in 2011. Starfield feels like a 15 year old game.

I just discovered your channel recently and I'm really enjoying your videos and reviews! You convinced me to buy Rune Factory 5, despite it's appearance, because you discussed how much fun you had with it & I really appreciate that. I've tried so many well-reviewed games that are technically good or visually beautiful, but are seriously lacking the fun factor.
And speaking of well reviewed games with little fun factor, my most disappointing game this year was Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. The first game was one of those completely unexpected gems that ended up being one of my favourite games on the switch, so I was not only hugely anticipating the sequel, but I was delighted to hear all the very positive reviews coming in and I bought it at launch. Well, it kept up some of the charm of the first game, and the music is just as good, if not even better, but the developers decided to make a good portion of the battles use procedural generation, resulting in dull, repetitive, too-easy maps. I can understand why it got good reviews because it does so many things well...but even with all the difficulty settings pushed to the max, I felt there was little to no challenge in most of the battles (made worse by the fact that I actually tend to enjoy easy games), and I felt gutted by the end of the game because I just didn't have that much fun with it.

I had been curious as to why you never did a proper review of Ryza 3, given that you have a review for practically every game in the series, but I definitely see where you're coming from here. I loved Ryza 1, and then Ryza 2 is one of my favorite games on Switch, but Ryza 3 left me overall a bit disappointed. I still wound up putting about 55 hours in and finished the main story, but unlike most other Atelier games, I just can't see myself wanting to come back to it.
Atelier games usually don't have a whole lot in terms of story, and Ryza 1 and 2 generally fit into that. Both of those games are basically just waffling around for the first 80% of the game before introducing a very simple plot for the final act of the game. I quite like that approach for those games, especially how Ryza 2 captures the feeling of exploring just for the hell of it wonderfully. However, Ryza 3 has a very large emphasis on story, but I feel like it completely falls flat due to terrible pacing and the rough translation. I totally get what you meant with regards to the Sardonica story arc; the game practically puts the main plot of the game on the backburner for like 10 hours while you do the stuff in Sardonica, and the game would wind up doing the same thing again a couple more times. It put me in this situation where I would completely forget what the current goal of the main plot even was because of how long it's been since it was mentioned. It made the story difficult for me to follow, which was further compounded by the rough translation and abundance of proper nouns. It's worth noting that I generally enjoy games with long stories, with Xenoblade being my favorite video game franchises, but while those games do have mini-arcs that sort of feel like filler, they never last for too long and are usually still story-significant I will say, despite how the game was really starting to feel like a slog after a while, I'm glad I stuck around to the end because it was a fantastic and emotional end to the trilogy.
It also doesn't help that I played Ryza 3 on the Switch, and while every other Atelier game looks just as good on Switch as it does on other platforms (aside from a lower resolution and 30fps), Ryza 3's ambitious world results in the Switch version being a significant downgrade from the PS5 and PC versions. This was all in service of having an open world which I believe, like you said, it way too big and winds up working against the game. I fully expected that the game's world would just be Kurken Island, the mainland from Ryza 1, the Kark Isles, and the Cleria Region. Have SO MUCH area to traverse winds up making materials more boring to collection and the already limited number of enemies feel too spread thin.
In the end, I really don't think it's a bad game and I still generally enjoyed my time with it, but with how high my expectations were, the little issues I had with the game really added up to hurt my opinion of it a good bit. (let's also not forget that Atelier games tend to have really stylized UI's, and Ryza 3's modern UI is honestly really boring in compariosn)
(It ALSO doesn't help that I actually shelled out $110 preordering NIS's Premium Box, which wound up leaving me quite disappointed. One of the main things I was getting it for was the artbook, expecting something along the lines of the official 150-ish page artbooks released for Ryza 1 and Ryza 2. What was shipped was a paltry 36-page book, containing more general promotional images and 3D models than concept art. I REALLY regret buying that collection, but at least the acrylic keychain and tapestry are cute)

The game that disappointed me was Ember Knights (Roguelike), it's not a big title, but i followed by a long time on steam and this year was released on switch, it's not bad but it's not that good :c, there are a ton of better roguelike imo... There are more games that disappointed me this year but that i played this year not released this year exactly :P

Silent hope gets much better the deeper you get. The story is pretty decent and there's a big twist that happens along the way which really changes the game (and title, actually?!). For some games, you have to play them through a bit to get the full feel. I'd highly recommend Silent Hope if you can get it on sale. Also, #protip : main the farmer.

Starfield was my biggest disappointmen and not because of content. The problem is that It has so many fundamental flaws with the most basic elements of the game mechanics and design. I’m
baffled as to how those flaws and illogical design choices made it past the initial whiteboard/concept stage as they could never work.

Starfield is a masterpiece! To get the full enjoyment you HAVE to follow the main story for quite some time before straying off and exploring. This gives you time to level up, meet new potential recruits (which give you buffs) and explore some of the main locations in the game. I played over 150 hours, definitely my G.O.T.Y

Starfield was the most disappointing game of 2023 for me. I was really looking for a cross between No Man's Sky (which I love) and Fallout 4. But all I got was a kinda crappy Fallout 4 in space. I was soo hyped for Diablo IV. I played through the story, so far I loved it. Then it quickly went downhill and turned it into a boring grind. I kept playing, but I had to really force myself to. I got the more expensive edition so it had the season pass included so felt I had to at least play through the first season. Then came back for season 2, made a character and stopped around lvl 20. In the end I never got a character to 100. Highest was the first toon that got to 96 or so. I really wanted to love it, and was ready to dump a lot more hours into it. But I just don’t enjoy it sadly. The graphics looks great. I played on pc and ps5. Was positively surprised that it was totally playable on a controller. I used to think a Diablo game had to be keyboard and mouse. I might revisit a later season to see if it has improved. Game of the year for me would be Sea of stars, Dave the diver and Baldurs Gate 3. I also stopped playing Ryza 3 after about 10 hours. Didn’t grip me the same way as Ryza 1 and 2.

The seasons in Diablo 4 make it worth playing and the boss fights have a higher chance to finish builds with the ultra rare unique items dropping more frequently. They might change some of the mechanics or improve them and the game will be more fun with new expansions to the game, so we'll see. I like the grind in dungeons, events, and gear farming though. The only that i dislike is a lot of gear drops arent better than what i already have base stat wise even if its a unique item so i have to constantly farm hoping to get better stats on a gear piece like base damage on a weapon and defense, then id reroll any unwanted stats unless its a unique.

My main issue with Atelier Ryza 3 was the lack of a post game. I got most of the achievements and completed all the content without having crafted 40% of the recipes. Like what? How's that possible? The game provides no incentive for creating most of the recipes.

Unfortunately it’s been just long enough that I’ll probably need to restart the game because I don’t remember most of the mechanics.
With regards to silent hope, I was really excited for the game as my expectations were interestingly leading me to think of a rune factory/star dew valley meshing … played the game for 5 hours and tossed it in my trash boring game bin😈

Unpopular opinions here, but (for me): *Starfield, Super Mario Wonder, Marvels Spiderman 2, Dead Island 2, Atomic Hearts, Final Fantasy XVI,* and *Zelda Tears of the Kingdom* were massive disappointments for 2023. Legitimately (not trolling). 😥
    - 👉 *Starfield* and it's lifeless gameplay, endless walking, frequent loading screens, weight limit issues, confusing progression, and the horrible choice of procedural generation in a modern bethesda game.

    - 👉 The odd design choices, annoying sound, bipolar difficult curves, bizzare but forgettable worlds (because they run together) of the new *Super Mario Wonder.*
    - 👉 The EXTREMELY heavy-handed American intersectional fringe politics shoved in a place it doesn't belong, and fundamental character changes that seem downright hateful (and instigative) to long time fans.... of *Marvel's Spider-Man 2* (without warning fans who played the first of the change).
    - 👉 I love these games... but not this time. The incredibly boring, linear, janky and uninspired gore-fest of *Dead Island 2* was too much for even an apologist like me.

    - 👉 *Atomic Heart* being just another BioShock clone that only makes it halfway to its greatness, for twice as much money. The problem not being a 'bioshock clone' (that's a good thing) - but rather that it over promised and failed to live up.
    - 👉 *Final Fantasy XIV's...* well... technical issues. Plus, the repetitive backtracking, endless cutscenes, and generic environments (even if the story was AMAZING)...
    - 👉 Pretty much EVERYTHING about *Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom.* Nintendo asked us to pay $70 for (mostly) the same map from a previous Zelda game... with only 25% more content... and less reason to exist as a sequel (should have been DLC)... and almost nothing to do after you've played around with the (admittedly god-tier) physics engine/puzzles, and completed the actual 20 hour story/campaign.
In 2023 I played a lot more disappointing games than this, but these are my top because they were set up to be classics and they fell from the highest perch in my mind. There are a few other AAA games like *_Jedi Survivor_* and *_Diablo IV_* which would otherwise merit inclusion this list... but (for me) the gameplay just barely saved them from their respective severe technical issues (at least on console).
Luckily, a *BEST OF 2023* would involve a list that would be far too long for this comment - so I think it was still a banger year for game releases. 😁👍

I totally agree with all games that you mentioned except Diablo IV, I mean it's subjectve for sure, but Diablo III was worst Diablo game they've ever made, Diablo I and II was best and IV was kinda like they tried to make game different from Diablo III, because how much people hated Diablo III, so I don't think Diablo III was even close to being best Diablo game ever. Was diablo IV best one, no because I felt like cinematic and expectation was way higher than game itself, I felt like older Diablo's had way darker style and Diablo IV is less of all that, and story was kinda small too, I was able to finish story in two days, and after playing playstation first party games and how good story they have, Diablo was kinda lacking that, but game itself is fine, at least it is not as bad as starfield, it's just older ones I played a lot, and when I hit some endgame stuff, I just stopped playing Diablo IV, because it was very good at beginning and then at the end it's just grind I feel nothing else, I wish at least they've added more multiplayer stuff and it would give game more ways to enjoy.
