I got your ii V I book. Working through those arpeggio exercises and transposing them to every single key was a delightful challenge… at first very tedious, but then at some point finding myself in a sort of flow state where I was transposing through the cycle of fifths without really “thinking”…

I really appreciate your content for different reasons. I am primarily a reggae bass player. Having been fortunate to meet most of the greats within this idiom, I got one major takeaway - roots in jazz AND classical music. The niw late Family Man Barrett of The Wailers started out studying jazz and described reggae as an adaptation of a walking bass concept.

Your style of speech in your videos is a bit more low and gravelly than it used to be. I don’t know if it’s a conscious choice or perhaps a more natural narration style for you but I love it.
It's very "simple", you learn all the scales in all positions, all patterns, in all variations, all inversions, all substitutions, you listen to 1000s of jazz records and you practice improvising through the standards a couple hours per day :) You'll be there in no time at all!
Learn all scales....practice a few hours a day w standards.THAT would suffice as a beginning.
I'm using Earnie cobalt 80 100. My sire seems to like them. It's untouched and I'm getting pretty low tension.
Thanks for that very good lesson, very clear as always. Is this a ii,v,1,vi progression in the key of C? If it is why the A7 is there instead of Am7? Anyways it sounds really good but i just want to understand why it fits songood😁
The reason for the A7 instead of Amin7 is that it's what's known as a "secondary dominant". There are a number of ways to think about it, but it's best to trust that, like you said, it feels and sounds good and fits the context of the music.
Although A7 isn't in the diatonic key of C, you can use it as the V7 of ii. That's basically making a V to i motion, a perfect cadence, to connect elements of an otherwise diatonic chord sequence.
You can do this with any chord in the key. Take a chord sequence like: || Cmaj7 | E7 | Amin7 | Fmaj7 | Dmin7 | G7 ||
The E7 is a secondary dominant and doesn't appear diatonically in the key of C. It does, however, create a perfect cadence from E7 to Amin7. Amin7 being a destination within the key.
Again, take any diatonic chord in the key of C, and find its associated V7 chord. For example :
|| Cmaj7 | C7 | Fmaj7 | Dmin7 G7 ||
C7 is the V7 of Fmaj7 in this case.

Im a bit confused, you mentioned playing 1357 in a different KEY, I guess the question is are you wanting me to play a different key on top of of a chord???

@@micheal21588 The sight reading book is really about learning to read bass clef from the group up. Any exercises in the aren't specific to walking bass, they're specific to rhythm and pitch.

I would love to buy the ii v i book, but when the international shipping is more than the book and puts it to $52 no thank you. And I am not paying the same $25 for the electronic version that you pay for the signed printed version. Your pricing structure seems a bit out of whack.
The signed physical copies available on our website are for fans who want exactly that: a signed physical copy. Something with a personal touch that is also somewhat of a collectors item.
There's a premium for that because I have to order and pay for the physical product, sign them, pay for packaging, make trips to the post office every day, and deal with international shipping which is not cheap. I set a standard price of $25 plus $2.50 per item in the order. There is quite the arc of price range from the US to the rest of the world, and the international shipping side of my business runs at a loss. I value the fans, and am prepared to take a way smaller profit margin on the international sales, especially as that is a smaller portion of the operation. If I were to suddenly get 100's of orders from Australia, I would definitely have to re-evaluate.
A book being shipped to Europe, just for the postage, runs me an average of $31. Then add $0.66 per padded envelope, and the ongoing cost of time and fuel for trips to the post office. The cost of each book to me varies from around $2.84 for one of the low page-count books, up to $5 for the more lengthy volumes.
I charge $27.50 for shipping and handling on author-signed copies because I think that's the maximum amount that is fair for the service.
An example of the other end of the spectrum is that a book to Australia runs around $37.50 at a minimum. On a $52.50 sale (total cost of book and shipping), that starts to become very slim margins for a considerable amount of work.
I have no problem sharing these numbers for transparency's sake, and I understand that the price point isn't for everyone. As such you can purchase unsigned physical copies of the book via amazon for $25 which may well include free shipping anywhere in the world depending on your location and your Amazon Prime status: a.co/d/1s5pASX
Amazon takes 40% of every sale I make. I'm not sure who is out of whack really, but I hope we've provided an option for every budget.
It's also important to understand that the value of the content doesn't change whether you have a digital copy or a physical copy. That's why these products are priced the way they are.
I hope one of the options works for you wherever you are in the world, and that you're able to enjoy the material and get something worthwhile out of it.

Apologies, I am not a keyboard warrior and feel embarrassed that my comment was obviously in that vain, I was just frustrated by wanting a physical copy and finding how much the shipping was. The cost of the book itself is not a problem. I also find the digital copies of less value to me, not because the content is different or of less value, but because of how I am likely to engage with it, a physical copy that I have with me and pick up and see in my environment will get used more. I was not aware that you sold them on amazon as well, but seeing how much they take from you for the privilege does not sit right either. I can certainly see why you need to charge the shipping amounts you do, but I am sure you can see why I would find it a put off. I can see the my comment and its contents were poorly presented and I do not wish to cause offence, so I hope you will accept my apology.@@janekgwizdala

I appreciate anyone that takes the time to voice an opinion or leave a comment, and it's very healthy to have those things out in the open, giving me a chance to be transparent with the process along the way.
I totally understand the increased engagement with a physical book that's in a room and not a PDF hiding on a device somewhere. I'm the same way.
And don't worry about Jeff Bezos and Amazon, if I thought the deal was too rough for me, I simply wouldn't sell my books through their service. The reality is that it all kind of balances out in the end. Fans who are in a position to afford it get their signed copies, and everyone else has the option to purchase essentially "locally" to them via amazon with little to no extra shipping cost. People more suited to using their iPad or laptop to learn have the digital option, and I am totally happy doing business all three ways.
I also get that seeing a shipping cost of $27.50 on a product that's $25 could be a "WTF?" moment. That's why I wanted to take the time to give some context, and also to let you know there were other ways to purchase the book without breaking the bank.
Your comment actually inspired me to create an episode of my podcast this weekend all about the cost of running the various elements of my business as it's something younger musicians ask me about all the time, so thanks for that!
