Better Bass Playing With Just One Note

  • I'm all about getting the most mileage out of the least amount of material. I guess it doesn't get more minimal than one note, and in this video I'll show you how you can add one note to an already pretty simple exercise to gain immediate access to a ton more music.
    This is for bass lines, composition, and soloing and can be used in just about any style of music you can think of.

    I'm always reminded of Jaco when he said "yeah, you can play, but how's your reading?"
    This is fundamental to improvisation I think. Knowledge of theory and how it relates to your musical vocabulary. For reference, I'm terrible at both music theory and improvisation 😂 but I do have a good ear...so there's that lol.
    What you were describing with adding a note to those 10ths is kid of a mindset, if you will (certainly for those of us who are crap at theory), a different way of thinking about how you play. Because without the knowledge it is not necessarily intuitive to even think of colouring the extra note in this example.
    Having access to information like this is great, like having a signpost to something that catches your ear. Less structured than learning theory from scratch for sure, but it's something I'll put into some of my practice time outside of rehearsals.

      It's never a popular answer, but the reality of any tone is that it's the result of how long you spend with your instrument. Not only is it time, but it's intent. I've spent over 30 years working on sound and time and I feel like I'm just about arriving at the beginning of the journey.

    Great exercise but i'm frustrated that you don't mention the importance of those ghost notes that drive the groove..just before the 10ths are played. I'm having a little trouble keeping that rhythm not knowing what those pre-10th notes are!😬

    • @stevendawson2331
      @stevendawson2331 Před 4 měsíci

      I know how you feel, but I reccommend thinking of it this way: That's the fun part - sitting with something like this and playing with it until it reveals itself to you. We call it "playing" - play is supposed to be fun. Play around with gently hitting the strings on the backbeats - the 2 and the 4. Try to just play one or two of the notes, say the D on the 1, and then make sure to gently play ghosted snare hits on the 2 and the 4. Once you have the 2 and the 4 consistently there, just keep adding additional notes from the groove. In my experience, the best thing to do here is to play that 2 and 4 "snare" until it is automatic - once you have that, you can add almost anyhing else. Good luck and remember to think of this as play!

    • @richardvalentine4186
      @richardvalentine4186 Před 4 měsíci

      I too have trouble with this - Steve Dawson has good advice about having it "revealed". Break the music into tiny bites and nibble your way through a bar or two.
      Sometimes it takes me a few days to get it just right - frustrating yes, but once you lock it down it's very satisfying...

    So you’re leading to the 10 chromatically, half step below it?

    • @stevendawson2331
      @stevendawson2331 Před 4 měsíci

      Phase 1: He's moving diatonically to the 10 from the 11 (when he moves from the higher suspension to the 10).
      Phase 2: He's moving diatonically to the 10 from the 9 (when he moves from the lower suspension to the 10).
      Note that when he has the F in the bass note, the 10 to 11 interval is a whole step because this is the lydian mode. Check 6:04 for this when he is descending from the 11 to the 10.

      @@stevendawson2331 thank you. I just learned 10’s with my coach last week. And already learned the modes. So diatonic is I term I haven’t been introduced to yet. This helps to know we stay in the mode for the chord shape.

      Thanks for that. I thought I was going crazy. There was something about how he was talking about 10ths but then playing an 11th, it was really messing with my head. Your explanation is what I thought was going on but now I understand where he was coming from as well. Best!@@stevendawson2331

    • @stevendawson2331
      @stevendawson2331 Před 4 měsíci

      @@madhatter7862 A way to think about this is that he is grooving out on Dm as the Dorian mode (using the ii in the key of C major as the I), rather than the natural Ionian minor (vi).
      This works to give you that Lydian sound on the F chord. Lydian is the mode associated with the fourth scale degree (IV)
      D Dorian - primary groove
      --Mostly using the 5, flat 7, and octave in our very favorite box shape, with some super cool gost notes, light touch quick octaves, and playing a snare back-beat with his right hand on beats 2 and 4.
      --Sometimes including the natural 6 (B) playing off the flat 7 (another clue for Dorian!!) on some intra-groove fills
      --Also using the super cool minor 10 (F) to major 10 (F#) hammer-on on some intra-groove fills (love the sweet trill back on the octave to the flat 9...)
      sus 10 fill:
      --G Mixolydian - half step (semitone) between the 11 (C) and 10 (B)
      --F Lydian - whole step (wholetone) between the 11 (B) and 10 (A)
      This is prossibly too much analysis of this awesome bit of funktitude, and there may be more educated folks who disagree with this, so please understand that this is just one bassist's understanding.
      But above all - note his time. It's just so solid. If I could just play one or two notes and hold that time, I'd be pretty happy.
