- What a strange and wonderful thing new concept EV is from Citroën. Jack has been extended an invitation to provide his initial feedback on the Citroën Oli. A brand-new idea electric car from Citroen.
Indeed, it is quite likely that this won't make it into production; but, trees grow from seedlings. The question now is what will be put into production. It's fairly certain that the design language will evolve the Citroën brand, but will anything else?

I love seeing the return of weird from Citroen... For too long they've been a bit conventional, this is what we need.

I absolutely love the design principles. strip out as much as you can, make it as affordable as you can, and make it fun. I'm so excited for Citroën's future
As long as they actually make this a reality, and not just a consept car for show, it is actually a great idea. I would imagine that the asking price for that vehicle would be pleasently low, and quite manageable for the common man. Aka me. lol

Citron doing what Citroen does best, really weird quirky stuff.
Stuff that you don't truly get until two decades after it's gone out of production, and then it's a total genius emerges.
It's amazing. I'm surprised no car maker has yet figured out how to make products like Ikea does, innovative light design that doesn't compromise on function.
IKEA may do so soon.
Citroën should now put all this quirkiness of design and super light weight into an all new electric CV2 model for mass production.😊
Absolutely. A reinvented "2CV" would sell hundreds of thousands and give far more people access to EV ownership.
They don't have the battery volume leadership to execute on this idea.

Yes, yes, yes!! Only thing about concept cars that I don't like is that they're almost perfect as they are. There's only one or two changes I would want from something like this as is.
The biggest thing that bugs me with most new cars is the width. They are all starting to push 1.9 m. In small roads and tight city spaces, the width is much more of an issue than length or height.
I agree wholeheartedly. I am fed up of having to squeeze past other huge vehicles. This thing is wider than a BMW 3 series or a Tesla Model 3.
Agree - my "small" car that I use as a daily runabout is 1894mm wide, my sports car which is 800mm longer is only 1770mm wide. Both 4 seaters. Weird that the small car is much smaller in all categories except width.
That vertical windscreen is just perfectly angled for getting stone chips. Nothing will be a glancing blow.
They’re claiming 6mi/kWh but don’t say at what speed.
They've basically made a 1966 VW bug, only worse and from cardboard. Same weight, length, width, same flat windshield. The Bug required 8 hp to maintain 100 kph on level ground and could climb a 45° angle slope. The Ghia required 6 HP at 100 kph. Does it float? Bugs did. Seats are cool. They'd make a Bug weigh less.
My first car was a 2CV. This feels like a proper spiritual successor. Please Citroën, just make it!

This looks like an SUV and I was about to turn away from this video, but when Jack exaplained that this car attempts at fixing the problems and told about the weight (a tonne?!) I was pleasantly surprised and watched the whole thing with hope for future mass production cars to follow this example. Please, show us more cars like this. Thank you.
We already knew how to make a cheap affordable practical car it's called a hatchback, we don't have to re-invent the car. We just have to look backwards and make it sustainable, and cheap not what EV's companies think is cheap, actually cheap like back then.
A fairly normal electric hot hatch is all I want. Why must everything be an SUV like?
@@ACZcamsAccountName not everything, but some of us have a use for a SUV. Two adults, three kids, two dogs, 4 bicycles on the roof and a caravan. Do that in a hot hatch.
And yes, we have a small cheap ev for the quick short day to day journeys.

A weirdly delicious combo of style, practical engineering and fun. I like it a lot!
Same vehicle but with AWD (Back motors optimised for low speed torque, and front motors optimised for cruising speed of 50-62 Mph (80-100 Km/h) with Electric Blue instead of fiery Red accents and i am sold. (Red is a bit too anxiety inducing for me) (Also extended warranty to 5 years for the entire car and up to 10 years for the battery, drive system (including suspension), steering system, and i just hope that we can get 50% price reduction for 20 years after warranty on the recyclable panels for self damage from condensation or regular use compromisation of materials, and I am sold.

One Ton. My first car, a 1985 VW Polo weighed 700kg. I like the fact that the Oli looks like a toy US Army Hummer.

Also this Citroen is pretty big, they wanted to show how much of room and features they can squish in 1t limit so it's not exactly they wanted to make smallest and lightest car.

Did not have batteries that are most of the weight.
I had a 1980 something Peugeot 205 diesel that was I believe 850 kg so the petrol version would have been lighter, great car to drive and own but nowhere near as safe as a modern car.

Absolutely fantastic. As the great Colin Chapman said “simplify then add lightness” and that’s exactly what Citroen are doing. Really hope they make this car.
From the immense positive reaction it received in France, I wouldn't dismiss the idea that Citroën is working on a production version of the OLI. One of the main concerns I heard was about the hygiene of the seats when you imagine long hairs entangled in the honeycombs, thus they would be covered with a light fabric.

3:30 40kWh battery: 250 miles=402km | 6m/kWh = 9.67 km/kWh or 10.34 kWh/100km
Did the math in my head and came to post. Around 10kWh/100km, or about 30% more efficient than a Model 3. Impressive, but not incredible (and that's okay).
I'd be willing to bet that 250-mile figure is at a substantially lower speed than an official WLTP figure. It's a concept car; they're not selling it so they can fudge the numbers however they like.
Low weight is king for city driving, but for highway and long distance driving, aerodynamics is what matters.
5:03 depends on what you want. if you want something that is efficient at highway speed then aerodynamics matter alot. if you want something for slower speed like city driving them weight matters alot.
i am very sure tesla is much more efficient at highway speed than this even if they weight more.

Citroen seems to be the only OEM that can get away with stuff like this so there is a fair chance something like it will happen. I think it will selll too, in modest numbers, to a certain customer. I think the flat windscreen has to go though, even if an angled screen weighs a bit more and costs a bit more the improvement in efficiency will more than cover the cost over the lifetime of the vehicle I suspect. Good work Citroen 😊
Not to mention rock deflection. Flat glass is a big no no for a REASON...
If I liked absolutely nothing else on the Oli, I would be sold by the completely flat windscreen which means cleaning away the haze that accumulates on the inside would be so easy! Imagine the difficulty cleaning your current vehicle's "stylishly raked" windscreen which involves all sorts of contortions which is why it rarely gets done. So, you put up with haze obscuring your vision driving into the sun or at night when an approaching car's headlamps are blinding you. As for rock deflection, if a rock is headed your way it's going to do damage to any windscreen.
@@Park2King haze? Clean it once, thoroughly, and then never touch it (use defogging heater, if there's condensation) and there should be no haze.
@@Validole Haze comes from decaying polymers in the dashboard, so there is no avoiding it.

Just a thought about seats. I have a fairly expensive office chair that is built in a similar manner. The chair is brilliant and light, and very comfortable. It is perfect in summer as your important parts will not sweat. In winter it needs to be upgraded with some cushioning because it gets too breezy. I still love it though.
Love the design and idea, would like to see more of those in the future. What more do we actually really need?

It's worth noting that some of the most loved cars ever were the smaller, lighter, cheaper ones - the 2CV, mini, beetle and fiat 500.

@@clives4501 That's a pretty stupid comment. I just put 200km back in my EV by charging at home, it cost me $8. How much would your gas guzzler cost for that distance? How about servicing? My EV's service cost $80 because there was nothing to do (they did a pickup, drop-off and tyre rotation for that money). Honestly, you shouldn't make comments about things you know nothing about.

I’m a big fan of “Me and Mon Ami’ CZcams channel (2 Brits who live in France travelling around in their Citroen Ami). Citroen designers think outside of the box and can make amazing looking cars when they decide to make the effort. Why oh why do these cars have to remain as concept cars? These would fly out of the showroom. I would buy one!
I love it. I owned a Citroen years ago and was always impressed with it. Currently I own a Peugeot but I would definitely buy this car if it ever came to production. The only thing I would change, is make the windscreen at least a bit angled. Citroen have gone for the Humvee look. I love how bold it is. Citroen have always been different and innovative.

American here. I would love to have this little car! I’m sure that it isn’t as comfortable as my big, fully loaded Outback for road trips, but I could scoot around town during the week and take it to the lake on the weekend for fun in the sun activities.

Just Citroen doing Citroen things and I’m all for it. I think it looks a bit stupid, but I love the fun element. As for making other car makers look silly, we’ll in Citroen’s press release, I saw somewhere them, basically actively shaming them and their luxury EVs that don’t do enough to be in line with sustainability, already. That tells me they really are dead serious about this new direction. So yes please!
Yeah, that "2.5 tonne palaces" bit Jack quotes is straight out of Citroen's promo blurb for this car. Anyone from Audi/Merc/BMW et al need any after-sun cream from that burn...?! 🤣
This is very reminiscent of the original (1979) Fiat Panda - minimalist, simple, sparse - in a word, perfect!
I want cars like this on the road! The interior is also a nice mix of the 70s and 80s. I love it!

they can't sadly. has to fit within French quadricycle rules - top speeds limited as you can drive an Ami without a licence in france. pretty sure it would be as easy to hack as an e-bike or scooter though ;)
Someone has an Ami in my home town. It whizzes about pretty quickly! With our traffic and average speed limits today, it's not as if we can do over 50 very often.

I love the Lego piece construction idea. I'm not sure about the longevity of the interior, but hopefully Citroen will have the option to cheaply swap it out for a new one when it gets a bit manky.
I would imagine a production version would have cloth covers over the seats and such. The honeycomb plastic structure is interesting from an engineering perspective, but not something the average joe wants to see day-in, day out. And really hard to clean. A removable, washable cover is the prefect solution.
This is so key, if, for example, the stylophone console takes a ding...if it is cheap to replace, who cares. The issue with cars now is a ding in the quarter panel is a multi-day and multi-thousand dollar repair. If I could order some doors off Amazon...boom. If I can fix my own car again....that is a game changer for a brand like this.
I'm not sold on the flat front window (lighter vehicles don't mean to get to ignore aerodynamics), but I love the form factor overall. It reminds me of the Honda Element...on drugs. Lots of cool ideas. I love the seat concept most of all.
pretty sure the flat front window is just a stunt to make it look more like the Humvee, which this car is apparently copying. If they were serious about reducing cost and weight with flat panels, they probably wouldn't have used these weirdly curved side windows which Jack dutifully ignored.
I miss normal seats. Why does a Tesla model 3 only come with electric seats which weigh loads? They're no more comfortable than the seats from my 2001 Corsa. I'm picking on Tesla because I have one but the same is true of basically all manufacturers. Seats are an obvious area where needless weight gets added, but there are tons of them.
FYI, there are air vents between the DRLs directing the air to the back of the car, at least somewhat fixing the aerodynamic problem
This is the Honda Element successor we have all been waiting for. Let's hope something actually like this comes to market!
It's totally OTT, ... except that it's NOT! What initially looks like a kid designer's first brush with magic mushrooms actually turns out to be as sensible as it gets. If this minimalist's dream machine is anything to go by, Citroën's fearless featherweights are about to punch their merry way from the brink right back into the very centre of the rink. I love it!
Love this- - -the Citroen-Lego love-child! However, a great, innovative concept, and I, and many others would seriously consider this as an idea that makes a lot of sense.
Citroen and the French auto industry return to the best of their innovative thinking.
This has everything I look for in a vehicle:
1- Practicality
2- Comfort
3- Simplicity
Please Citroen, make this thing now, as is. On a side note, because of the weight and electrical propulsion system, this thing would probably be quite nippy. Not sporty, but perky.
Awesome looking car. I have an Toyota FJ and love the styling, reminds me a lot of this. Can’t imagine the noise on the freeway with that windscreen, or how it would deal with rain. But hey all you need to do is cant that front glass and it would improve. It’s like a mini for our time, rather than the retro catastrophe of the beetle and mini. Nice concept

Seems like a sensible minimalist city car that can occasionally venture as far as the next charging station. Too bad they don’t sell the brand in North America anymore. I’m sure there’s a market on the west coast, if a limited one
This is so very Citroen. My old BX19 was pretty conservative next to a DS or CX, but it still had great design and a willingness to rethink aspects of the car. One of the best cars I've ever owned.
My fave car I've owned yet was my 1st gen BX19 GTi 16v. It weighed just over a ton, and made almost 180BHP (with a full Scorpion stainless exhaust & K&N filter kit), and there wasn't anything GTi-like it couldn't either keep up with or beat. 0-60mph was around 6.2sec (2nd gear), with 140+ top end.
I upgraded the brakes, also added a set of Pug 209 GTi wheels, had them refurbed and polished, then shod them with very sticky Toyo tyres, lowered it, and it cornered like it was on rails.
I did get a newer model later, but they made it slower, as it needed 3rd gear to hit 60mph, so it wasn't as much fun and I sorely regretted selling my first BX.
Love it! My dad's first car was a Citroen GS so always had an affinity with the brand, despite their dodgy years a couple of decades ago. I'd happily drive that. Also love the absence of touch screens. So much prefer buttons that you don't need to take yours eyes of the road and just have a feel about and a small screen close to your line of sight. And on top of that I can pronounce Citroen properly, not citron.
It's like the European version of the humvee, with everything done right. Great car citron

How do weld or restore the shape of "cardboard" if you have a bump/collision? Answer: back to the factory for a partial rebuild. Brilliant.

Joystick on the steering wheel is also 100% better than a touch screen for a car.

I was highly sceptical from the start but I am won over by the end. This thing has some very clever tricks.
Love the one tonne mass. Also love that the design team penned the interior after being forced to watch Baise-moi for 2 days straight, eyeballs pinned open, Clockwork Orange-stylee. Love French weirdness.
Would've loved to see how they managed security, airbags, belts (saw these, didn't see how secure they fit), etc
They probably didn't, this is a concept, it's not road legal.
Forget it, its too expensive, Green Deal first. Just be more careful in this car. 😉
That's where concepts fail in the real world. Without autonomous braking, lane keep assist, cameras, auto cruise control, airbags etc this car would get a terrible Euro ncap score and get vilified. Safety tech adds weight. Those doors would fail side impact tests, there's no room for curtain airbags. Probably why the Ami doesn't even have a Euro ncap rating.
If I have a choice of 2 cars, one is lightweight, efficient and cheap the other is heavier, less efficient and more expensive, but means my kids have a better chance of surviving being t-boned by another car, I know where my money will go.

Want one! That would be my first Citroen. Amazing idea to turn the hatch in to a mini pickup truck body for those odd times when it doesn't fit in the car.

Aero isn't massively critical until you get somewhere around 60 and the top speed of this is limited not much above that.
Hopefully Citroen have regained their lost quirkiness
But remember where you are driving when you are likely to be pushing the range envelope ... yes, on a motorway at 70mph. Range in city driving already isn't an issue even for the current crop of EVs. People aren't struggling for range driving around the city. Lightness is good nevertheless but let's not forget that cars need to be efficient at 70mph.
I genuinely do not know why Citroen are holding back with the Oli..I would buy one in an instant ! RIGHT NOW !! Though the very handsome Jack could sell me snow ;)
Some very nice ideas there, but I'm not a fan of the flat windscreen, but I could knock up a perspex, polycarbonate (or polythene!) canopy to complete the flowline from the bonnet.
Doesn't matter how light it is, aerodynamics is very important!
Really love the concept of light weight and fuel efficiency car. It’s vulnerable from other heavier and faster cars on the road though 😢
That’s a notion that legacy auto manufacturers have been, and will keep pushing, for sure.
With those doors, I wouldn't want to get T-boned by even another of one of these. No evidence of side-intrusion prevention

This concept asks a very interesting question : Why do we need so much technology directly in the car ? Of course, safety technology is needed but, we almost all have a device today that is enough for internet connectivity, navigation, and multimedia content. Why do we need it in the car ?
Almost all new cars have all of this built-in, while we have it in our pocket too...
And this is something this concept truly explores !
I've driven/owned 2CV's since I bought my first one in 1973 .....I could take to owning one of these too.
I was looking at the new BMW iX yesterday parked outside a big Church. It really looked like a modern medieval witch carriage. Simply horrendous.

I was initially aghast by that front windscreen, then I heard 6.2 miles per kwh and remembered that the back can matter more than the front for aero efficiency? Also cheaper to replace? What a win! Although I wonder if there were a middle ground and that was done for shock value?
Love it. Even more for Citroën as a brand, which has been wandering in the desert for decades, than just the particular car. Doing things really differently at a reasonable price, that is what they should be about. Only thing weird about the concept is that you can't use your phone screen for navigation and music, which is the first cost cutting measure that comes to mind when thinking how to make modern cars more affordable.
That phone-slot is pure concept, and would never make it into a production vehicle, because it's so model-specific (and doesn't support the various cases people use, etc)... so yeah - the production model would probably have a cradle, or at least a mount for one.
Interesting concept. I would be interested in hearing about considerations of pedestrian safety with that front and windscreen.

Agreed - safety in general. I absolutely love the idea of 'adding lightness' to cars - but while there was much talk about how much lighter coated cardboard is compared to steel - everybody will have been envisioning the structural cardboard protecting their family. I'm not saying it isn't safe - but don't specifically exclude those discussions. If you say cardboard is lighter than steel - finish the sentence by comparing the stiffness and strength.

I would love to see a test with a high weight vs low weight car. Same chassis, just change the weight. My experience is that weight is much less of a factor than people think, certainly at highway speeds.
Weight (mass) is a factor when changing speeds (ie it's the primary impact on efficiency in stop-start traffic) - as you say, it's less of a factor once at a constant speed. However, how often do you actually get to stay at the same speed, even on the motorway?
I do think that a few tweaks (e.g. sloped windscreen) might help with the aero-efficiency on the motorway, but for most people, the weight-reduction will have a bigger impact on day-to-day efficiency, which results in less charging (and lower 'fuel' costs, etc)
You'd be surprised. A car with a drag coefficient of 0.29 (Opel Vectra) is spending about as much energy on rolling resistance as on air resistance at 100 km/h (62 mph). The difference is that at walking speed the rolling resistance is still about 2/3 of what it is at 100km/h, while wind resistance is basically nil. And rolling resistance grows essentially linearily with weight.
So a 1000kg car has half the rolling resistance of a 2000kg car always
Meanwhile, at speed the 1000 kg is probably a bit smaller than a 2000 kg car (smaller cross sectional area) but also probably boxier and thus has a higher air drag coefficient (still have to fit 4 people, unless you're Aptera).
Think of it this way: two cars, both travelling slow (negligible air resistance), when allowed to coast with the gearbox disengaged, on flat land, will coast about the same distance. But if one is half the weight of the other one, that means it had half the initial kinetic energy. That means the rolling resistance had to be half that of the bigger car, otherwise it would have decelerate faster.

An EV that isn't identical to every other EV - well that's some progress I grant you. The vertical windscreen is done for dramatic effect only - there are several good reasons we haven't had those since 1925.

Nailed... Citroën reducing weight in their own unique style.... Petrol Ped asked if you "had to have only one brand, what would it be" I stand by my answer Citroën!! They are not perfect, not a driver's car but they have their own unique style and they are never sterile & boring.
Could please translate the efficiency into units that makes sense to most of the world..... either Wh/km or kWh/100km would be nice. Please?

The first mod I can see everyone doing is adding a deflector on the hood to direct air over the windshield for better aerodynamics.
If you look at it in a wind tunnel, I bet an air pocket forms at a certain speed.
Isn't that what the built-in air deflectors from the headlamp channels already do...? I'd like to see some CFD or wind-tunnel results to saee how well they work!
Apart from the windscreen I find it fascinating design a head turner and for all the right reasons, and if they can manufacturer it for under 15k and it has bidirectional charging and I mean real bidirectional like the Leaf, I am up for one!

Brilliant. Seats look difficult to clean. Maybe make them very easily removable for hosing down. A flat screen must be much cheaper to make. Love the enthusiasm of the presenter.
Thank you, Citroen, for really pushing forward the idea of what an electric car does. Even if 50% of this thinking hits reality, it's more than other companies have done. If this design works, then it should be used. Through users using it we'll find out what works or not!

Finally someone is listening - not everything in an EV needs to be powered! Also, despite the flatness, looks better than the Cybertruck.
My main concerns is the durability of the Styrofoam-like interior, and the cardboard in the panels - what happens if the outer fiberglass is punctured and moisture gets in? How long is the vehicle expected to last? What would the safety rating be?
This is the best new car design I’ve seen in a very long time.
